This should have a suitability age - don’t go unless you have young children I would say under 6.
It sounded great on the website but my. 9 and 13 year old were bored and we left early. This wasn’t because the staff weren’t knowledgeable but just that it’s catered for younger children.
Nonetheless the museum side was interesting.

Visited this attraction with my two children. There is an initial talk given by one of the staff which is engaging and introduces children to archaeology. This is followed by the children being able to do a bit of simulated digging. Unfortunately, it was a bit too basic for my children aged 11 and 13. It would suit under 10's better.

Very poor experience
Visited the Dig today with my 12 year old grandson. Unfortunately it was a very poor experience for his age group, more suited to a youngster.
The ‘Dig’ was rubberised sand in 4 sections which were more like child’s sand pits. The small children in the group enjoyed it but for a child over the age of 7/8 it was a poor educational experience

My 6 year old said DIG was AMAZING, and the best bit was digging. The facilitator gave such an interesting and very clear talk for the children about archeology and what we can learn from different artefacts. And she came to see what the children had dug up and explained all their finds in a really accessible way. Super educational and engaging as well, and really good value for money. The museum is interesting as well, to look around afterwards.

I visited with my daughter (7), and we were joined by my daughter's friend (6) and his mum. We all had a brilliant time at DIG.
When we first arrived, we all had a chance to sit and listen as our guide explained a variety of different artefacts, which were passed around or shown under a microscope. My daughter really loved this session, as there were lots of engaging opportunities to answer questions. This initial talk added a really valuable educational element. There were a few people in our group that felt less comfortable in this question and answer environment, and I was particularly impressed by how our guide focused on those that did feel more able to join in, without pressuring others (and there were stickers available for everyone to show how much they wanted to be involved), but made sure to instantly react when the quieter group members felt ready to volunteer ideas. It was a really inclusive experience.
Afterwards, the children were able to go and dig in a variety of different pits (filled with clean rubber pieces) to find artefacts of their own. They enjoyed finding skeletons, bits of pottery and other treasures, which brought their learning to life. Our group's guide was there to comment on each find, so the children understood exactly what they were looking at.
There was also a small museum, more interesting for the adults than the children, so we didn't feel we were missing out either!

The way this place is set out is great. A 25 min talk then 30 min dig and then look around afterwards. However I wasn’t expecting the talk to be done by a person wearing a mask. I am totally deaf in one ear and there was lots of background noise too, I couldn’t hear anything he was saying which seemed interesting. We were sitting at the back and they’d started the talk just before we arrived so didn’t feel I could say anything. My children aged 10 and 11 who can hear with no problems struggled to hear everything. So this really took the enjoyment out of the first part. The dig was great and we all loved that part.

Booked this as part of the Jorvik package, but it was m favourite part. The guide was really interesting talking about the things that had been found in the past and relating it to everyday life. It was really fun to ‘dig’ for hidden remains in the museum. Had booked the last tour as I was sure it said adult only, however, there were a few children in the big group but wasn’t made to feel as if it was only for the children.

I went with my almost 4 year old and he enjoyed it. The talk at the beginning is informative. The staff are engaging but also understand the children may be fidgety and there us an awesome play area. My son likedthe dug aspect and if he was a little older I think he would have spent his full half hour digging allocation here. As it was he left the area and spent ages in the play area which he loved.
The tickets are very reasonable, especially if you live locally like we do, as it is free returns within a year.

Great fun for your kids and teaches them to know about archaeology- Bede was very good at explaining everything and sharing his enthusiasm for archeology.

The DIG Archaeological Adventure is a fantastic accompaniment to the Jorvik Viking Centre experience. I visited with my 4 year old and was immediately impressed by the facilities and resources available, and above all, the staff. The most creditable asset of the facility was the staff - particularly the well spoken young man with longer hair/beard who had an incredible wealth of knowledge about archaeology through the times.
I would recommend that the Centre perhaps separate sessions for age ranges and tailor them accordingly. Whilst we visited, it was my son and a boy around 8 years of age. The session was of appropriate pacing, content and timing for that boy, but my son quickly lost interest in the talk and proceeded to try to leave the session. There was a lot of talking and a lot of knowledge - absolutely ideal and so impressive for ages 8 and above. But if the center sell tickets for children even below 2 years old, they must consider what is pedagogically appealing for certain ages. This means that visitors can enjoy the best possible experience for the money and time they put into the center.
Please give the young man who gave the talk a big credit - he is fantastic and would be a brilliant history teacher.

If he has any interest in history or archaeology he should enjoy the "Dig". The experience is very interactive and engaging and gives kids the opportunity ti get up close with real archaeology.

Would this be suitable for two adults interested in history, or is purely aimed at children? Would we feel a bit weird joining in?

Personally I think the Dig centre is really aimed at children and school trips. However, my husband and I have been and there is still a lot of interesting information. Best not to try and go in school holidays!

How long does the tour last?

the activity lasts about an hour but then there are other interactive things to do and other exhibits to look at. so could be anywhere between 1 and 3 hours depending in your age and level of interest

Hi, do you have to pre book and is there anything need to know before go please? Thanks.
Hi,
You can turn up and book at the desk for one of our tours that day (tours are every half an hour between 10am-4pm). However, you can pre-book online through the website or by calling our Reservations team to check availability as we have a lot of school groups and are busier during holiday periods so can guarantee a time-slot and avoid disappointment. Tours last an hour and are an introduction to archaeology aimed mainly at a family audience. More information can be found on the DIG website.
