This is a great attraction for young children. The archaeology talk to begin with is very informative and very interactive with the children. My child especially enjoyed learning about the poo! The dig pits are great and the adults can join in too, mind you don't forget to empty your shoes out before you leave!

Arrived at DIG for the first time the other day as my daughter is really interested in history and archaeology.
The talk at the start was interesting and informative. The staff were great and clearly enjoy what they do.
After the talk, we got down to some digging for artifacts. I was surprised to see the area to dig in was quite small, so children often were digging in the same place as each other. The objects uncovered were static and once one child discovered them then all the others knew where things were, which took the element of surprise away. You are supposed to re-cover the item you've 'discovered' but this wasn't really happening so we were basically just scooping sand away from something we'd already seen from when the first child found it.
I really like the concept of DIG but I think it really needs to be bigger, with more items added for kids to dig for and interact with them. There are some items on display in rooms to the side and in cases in the 'talk' area but not that many and again, not that interactive either.
I think with a bit more imagination, space and interaction this could be an amazing experience. As it stands though, it's nice but didn't blow us away.

Very lack lustre I felt. A half hour talk (interesting) and then some digging of plastic finds that can’t be dug out and aren’t moveable. Disappointing

Firstly, shout out to Kezia who was so enthusiastic and encouraging with the kids. She had a great personality too, it really came over in the presentation.
I booked this having done very little research into what it was.
You get 30 mins of an interactive talk led by your guide, with artefacts from historical digs. Lots of questions and chat.
Then 30 minutes to dig, the kids loved it, and Kezia did a great job of getting around everybody.
Improvements?
Consider closing off the presentation area or using headsets because with kids digging excitedly and the "classroom" area being open, it became quite noisy and the group leader on the next tour really had to shout to be heard. Maybe add some bits the kids can dig up and perhaps one they can keep? For example you have replica coins in the gift shop. Incorporate into the price of the dig at a discount and the kids will walk away with a little treasure etc.
As we used clubcard vouchers to do the Dig I would say it was excellent value.
It was a little shorter than expected but I really didn't research it.

Such a great place, really reasonably priced and the whole experience is really good. Half an hour talk at the start is really interesting and kept our 5 and 8 year olds entertained the whole time. The dig part is good fun and Max our expert was lovely with the kids and really entertaining. Would rather have stayed here for twice as long and not bothered with the Viking museum, ran by the same people but this is much cheaper and ten times better!

Staff were friendly, helpful, very educational. Kids loved finding out about York and really enjoyed being little archeologists. Excellent value for money.

We visited as a family with our 5 year old son, we were welcomed to the centre and it was explained there would be a 30 minute talk followed by 30 minute dig. There are also galleries/displays that you can look at before or after the hour. Kacie was fantastic, and made the talk really engaging and interesting, it was great for both the adults and the kids. After this my son really enjoyed the dig, and Kacie was on hand to answer any questions about what had been discovered, she was extremely knowledgeable and interacted with the kids really well.

Very interesting and entertaining. Managed to sustain the full attention of my 6 and 3 year olds for the full half hour presentation. Bede was an excellent tour guide and presenter! Very knowledgeable and a great educator who kept it fun and engaging throughout.

This was great and educational without the kids realising. My daughter got a bit bored with the talk before hand but that wasn't the fault of the "leader", we had a child with additional needs in the group and they answered every single question, then spoke about it in great detail rather than allowing the leader to continue. When given the chance to actually dig, the kids all loved it. You could hear the excitement as they found things and called over the leader to find out what they had uncovered. We had an excellent time there.

I visited during half-term with my two daughters (5 and 3 years old). First of all, I think it's excellent value for money as the tickets last all year, so we will definitely be returning.
We received a lovely and informative welcome, and were explained how our experience would work; we would have half an hour talk, and half an hour digging experience.
Anastasia led our talk and was amazing, she tailored it for my 5 year old, and was super informative and interactive, she was really patient with my 5 year old, and showed her lots of exciting objects, she asked lots of questions and let my daughter touch and feel the different objects. My 3 year old is a bit less interested in archeology so she happily played in the playroom at the side with grandma. Which was an added bonus that she could have fun too, as the play room was well equipped and she could have spent a good amount of time in there!
Then when it was our turn to dig, she made it an exciting informative experience and made us feel really comfortable. The dig experience was great, and added bonus the sand/soil was made of rubber type material, so no one came home dirty!

Thank you for visiting DIG: An Archaeological Adventure, and from the sound of it, the whole family truly went on an adventure through York's heritage. Thank you for leaving such detailed feedback. It really helps to improve the experience for everyone, those returning or coming to DIG for the first time. We look forward to your future visit as you are right, your tickets are valid for a whole year, so you can explore York's archaeological heritage once more!
Thank you.

Do you think DIG is also worthwhile for our children (aged 3 and 5) who speak a different language than English? They always watch English Netflix so might have a basic understanding, but never used English in a real-life situation.

Is it better to do Yorvik first and then DIG or the other way round? Our son is 7.

I did DIG with my three grandchildren first, as it it gives a 'grounding' or background that children can then associate with Jorvik. It helps them make more sense of what they are seeing, and what the archaeologists actually did.

If he has any interest in history or archaeology he should enjoy the "Dig". The experience is very interactive and engaging and gives kids the opportunity ti get up close with real archaeology.

Would this be suitable for two adults interested in history, or is purely aimed at children? Would we feel a bit weird joining in?

Personally I think the Dig centre is really aimed at children and school trips. However, my husband and I have been and there is still a lot of interesting information. Best not to try and go in school holidays!

How long does the tour last?

the activity lasts about an hour but then there are other interactive things to do and other exhibits to look at. so could be anywhere between 1 and 3 hours depending in your age and level of interest
