‪Apparently this used to be a rather disappointing place to visit. Certainly not now. This keep has got a new structure within it to allow you to explore most of the building, and wander over the entire new roof to look across the City of York. Perhaps there could be a few more displays, but the history of the Tower is covered well, and the staff both at the bottom of the motte and within the tower were helpful.

It is a fair few steps up, which might put some off, but there are places to stop and rest if you need to.‬

‪Lots of steps to climb before you get inside, and even more inside to get to the top, but once you do the views over York are not to be missed, coupled with the history of the tower it is worth visiting, though perhaps not for people with mobility issues ‬

‪What a fantastic job English Heritage have done with the works to the Tower. There is new seating on the steps up the motte allowing for a breather on the way up should you need it. You can always pretend, like I did, that you are looking at the view!!!

Inside, there have been major improvements. The inner frame has opened up the "floors" and allows a new perspective, especially of the garderobe! All the way around are "speaking benches" telling stories based on people who lived at specific historic events. Very enjoyable.

The view from the roof is just spectacular, with seating to be able to spend more time taking it all in. The routes up and down are a little confusing, though, and could be better signposted or you find yourself meeting people coming the opposite way on very narrow spiral staircases...

Yes, it is quite expensive, but this is our heritage that is being supported, so well worth it to us but can appreciate it may be a bit too much for many.‬

‪If you don’t mind climbing the step steps to the Tower then enjoy the view from the top of the tower. It’s not the end of the steps when you get inside as there are more to the top. The panoramic views of the City are incredible. Not cheap but I suppose reasonably priced.‬

‪My fiance and I visited here during our trip to York last weekend for his belated birthday celebrations. We had already visited several of the popular attractions in York the last time we came, so to mix it up a bit we decided to give Clifford's Tower a try as it had always stood out to us (well, it is on a hill!)

We had parked close by and had seen lots of people walking up to it/around it so we thought it must be worth it. Unfortunately, while I appreciate the magnitude of the building and the history behind it, we felt that it was simply too expensive for how little there is to actually see.

Don't get me wrong, the gentleman who gave us our tickets was a joy to speak to, we found the history of the building to be quite interesting and there are some excellent views at the very top, but it sadly isn't worth the money we paid. It's also important to note, if you're thinking of visiting, that you must be careful on the spiral stairs that you must use to access the roof! There's no room for more than one person on them, whether you're coming down or up, and the individual steps are incredibly narrow and, to be honest, quite frightening so be careful!

It's definitely a one-time-only visit for us, sadly, but we appreciated what we learned during our short time in there.‬

‪The refurb is fantastic! A new platform on the room with brilliant views. A small attraction but well worth the trip. Staff are lovely.‬

‪Had not visited for many years and had always found the experience a bit scary as someone who has a fear of heights. I had seen that it had been refurbished so thought I should give it another try. Much improved and I felt much safer. However, there is not a lot to do once you have admired the great views over York, so I thought it was expensive for the amount of time we were in there.‬

‪I was looking for things to do out of the norm for my other halves 50th birthday as I was surprising him with a trip to our favourite place - York.

We have been so many times, and that's because we love it and we never get bored!!!!! It's not far from Leeds where we live, and we always travel by train instead of driving as it's just as cheap instead of paying to park. Plenty of bars, pubs, restaurants, cafe's, shops and all in a compact walkable area.

So, the fact that we have NEVER been into Clifford's Tower, despite our numerous visits, I thought we'd give it a whirl. We love history and try find a new place to visit every time we come.

I booked easily on line, tickets were £9 each (adults, no concessions), and I was given downloads to print out in advance of our trip, and take with me. This was nice and easy and on arrival, I was told to present them on the door.

Stood at the bottom of the stairs looking up to the Tower was some what daunting as I am on my 3rd hip replacement, so I just took my time, waving people past us on the inside haha!!! I am a bit slow on my legs to be fair. But there are hand rails all the way up, plus there are benches half way up and down, in case you need to rest, which thankfully, I didn't.

We got to the top to be greeted by a lovely young man, with lots of enthusiasm, and then after scanning our QR codes on the tickets, off we went inside.

We were met by an amazing, historically significant building. How English Heritage have utilised the space, is fabulous. More steps I noted though!!!!! But again, plenty of handrails, and no one rushing you along, so just took my time. We read the info in the doorway, and found such a history of what Clifford's Tower was all about.

We never realised it hadn't had a roof, but infact, it had only just had a full refurb which re-opened in April 2022, and English Heritage have put a roof on, to protect the inside of the building for many more years to come. And what a good job they have done.

There are, what I class as suspension type walkways, up towards the roof, and this allows closer inspection of the walls, the windows, just the general wear and tear of the old building, and it's amazing to see how old some of the etchings into the stone are. Think we found one from 1887 and a name that we couldn't read - but to touch things that had been touch by people going back as far 1290 is quite overwhelming.

It makes me so happy when I see places like this full of other interested people. And by paying a small fee to enter, you know this is going towards the up keep of the building so we were happy to do it.

On climbing one of the spiral stair cases up to the roof, we were greeted by a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. It was great to pick out buildings we have visited, the views were phenomenal - it was a lovely sunny day to be fair, with no clouds (makes a change this far 'up North' as it always rains in Leeds so we just expect it when we are across visiting York !!!!!!)

The roof is very modern, so really compliments the age of the building and there were plenty of benches to sit on if people struggled getting up there. But it's a must if you want to check out THAT view. So glad we did.

All in all a lovely experience, that didn't take over our day - literally walked around and read everything, went into all the nooks and crannies and it took about an hour at the most. Could do it in less time, but why waste what it costs to go in, without learning something along the way, which we did.

Thanks for a lovely visit
