We spent a wonderful day with Alan Rowley who toured us up and down the Moore’s,Dale’s and villages from York to Whitby and back.
A very entertaining and informative tour of well known and not so well known places and monuments.
Alan is a true English gentleman with a vast knowledge of his countries history.

My husband and I arranged with Alan Rowley many months in advance to spend a day in Yorkshire, seeing sites associated with the Brontes and visiting Haworth and the Bronte Parsonage Museum. This experience has been on my bucket list since I was fourteen years old, so for my 65th birthday we traveled from the United States to finally do it. I am a recently retired university professor, so I have scholarly and artistic interest in the Bronte family, Haworth and Yorkshire.
In the months leading up to the tour, Alan and I corresponded frequently to work out the details of my special day. He was always prompt to reply, courteous and knowledgeable. I appreciated his reassuring me as the time drew near for our departure that all was well.
When the big day finally arrived, the weather was cold, windy and rainy and I had come down with a terrible cold and laryngitis since our arrival in England! Nothing was going to deter Alan or us, so he picked us up at our York hotel as planned. His impeccable car was warm and comfortable, and he'd provided York chocolate bars and bottled water for the road, and brought along umbrellas. Alan is a wonderful conversationalist, and answered my husband's and my many questions about York, Yorkshire and England on our drive. Alan also has a great sense of humor; we were constantly entertained.
Alan asked if I was a fan of artist David Hockney, and, since I am, he offered us a quick side tour to Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage site, to Salts Mill to see the large permanent Hockney exhibition there. This opportunity was a great bonus, and Alan is extremely knowledgeable about Saltaire and its history.
Alan then took us to Thornton, to see the house where Charlotte Bronte and some of her siblings were born, then on to Haworth, to the Bronte Parsonage Museum, the church and the church graveyard. I cannot express how kind and understanding Alan was. Alan spontaneously and sincerely hugged me as I wept, overcome with emotion at finally seeing the parsonage at Haworth after dreaming of being there for a lifetime. I cannot imagine a better tour guide than Alan; he is so knowledgeable and accommodating. He made sure I had plenty of time to explore Haworth and photograph everything after I finished seeing the Parsonage Museum. Even though the weather was cold and drizzly, it was indeed the perfect day, as Alan remarked, to set the mood to see the Brontes' home and the moors, the inspirations for the settings of their books. It would not have been the same to see it in summer's bright sunlight.
Days are short at this time of year, and Alan delivered us back to our York hotel as the sun set. It was a perfect day, and Alan made sure to let me see and experience everything I had dreamed of and imagined for a lifetime. I truly cannot imagine a kinder, more knowledgeable or more entertaining tour guide. He made sure everything was perfect.
More than that, Alan is a wonderful ambassador for York, Yorkshire and England. My husband and I are so happy to have met him. Having gone on a customized tour with Alan, we now wish we had allowed more time in York and Yorkshire and less time in London. I am certain the other Yorkshires True Tours are just as excellent as the customized Bronte tour Alan devised for me.
In summary: HIGHLY RECOMMEND YORKSHIRES TRUE TOURS and tour guide ALAN ROWLEY. Go on a tour with Alan. You will not be disappointed!

thank you sincerely for your outstanding review, it was a pleasure to be of service to you, I learned very quickly from our conversation that you were extremely knowledgeable about the Brontes and it was a pleasure for me to able to converse with you at such a level.We did see quite a lot and I gained much pleasure from sharing the day with you both and being able to exchange views and opinions on the lives of the famous Bronte Family.
in Saltaire again your depth of knowledge regarding David Hockney was amazing, Omar also got to meet the Lions outside the Town Hall.
All in all it was an extremely satisfying day and I do hope that we meet again, thank you for choosing our company to share such a wonderful experience with you both.

Enjoyed visiting York Minster today with a group of 20 friends . Alan was our tour guide and he did an amazing job of showing us around and explaining lots of interesting facts about the Minster and its history over the last 1500 years . Lots of amusing tales that linked it to the history of England through the ages . Alan really knows his stuff and is very professional . During the tour , the number of people had swelled from our 20 to probably 60 or more . All captivated by the quality of his speech and delivery .
Can’t recommend Alan highly . A true gentleman and someone who will bring your visit to York Minster to life and make it extremely enjoyable .

My father, a retired veterinarian (in the United States, Michigan) and a James Herriot fan, had wanted to see Thirsk and the Dales for years. When we decided to take him and the family, I wanted it to be a perfect experience. I contacted Alan (Rowley) about leading a private tour for the 8 of us, and he gladly agreed. Since there were 8 of us, we did need to rent a 9 passenger van for the day, which I agreed to in advance. Alan secured the van, arrived promptly at our designated pickup spot and proceeded to take us on an incredible tour of Thirsk and the Dales. He even managed to time it perfectly so that we arrived as Sutton Bank just before sunset. Alan is the consumate gentleman and professional. His depth of knowledge regarding James Wight (James Herriot) was incerdible. He actually knows Wights kids. In addition, his knowledge both of history and current polictical events was very impressive and interesting, Alan was flexible, and tailored the tour to our needs. We did not care to see where the TV series was filmed (we read the books but didn't watch the series), so he took us to other scenic sites in and around the Dales. The complimentary bottled water and Yorkie candy bars were a nice touch as well. If you are considering a tour through Yorkshire True Tours, rest assured, you willl not be disappointed.

When my husband and I decided to tour Castle Howard on a return trip to York, there was no question that Alan was our first choice. It was our second tour with him, and just like the first trip, we had a wonderful time. Alan is such a pleasure to be with! He is a true professional, so kind and full of interesting facts. Thank you, Alan. We look forward to seeing you again!

We’ve been to Yorkshire several times , but, until May, had visited neither James Herriot points of interest nor Roseberry Topping, a pile of dirt that my wife, a Roseberry, had wished to see for many years. Alan facilitated our viewing both. Then, a ride through Yorkshire Moors and Dales gave us a real appreciation of their beauty. Alan’s knowledge is extensive and he is both interesting and congenial. What we accomplished in a day would have taken several without his help. This was a real pleasure and a great value in both time and money. Incidentally, the pile of dirt was actually quite nice. Thank you, Alan

In July, my wife and I accompanied a family friend who has Parkinson’s disease on a tour run by Alan from True Yorkshire Tours. Alan was an absolutely outstanding guide. His knowledge, kindness and care for all of us was outstanding. I would highly recommend Alan and the company to anyone.

We hired Alan for the Herriot tour and he did not disappoint us. Alan arrived on time at our hotel, drove us all over the Dales, pointed out interesting sights, let us take loads of pictures and even stopped to get coffee and home made cake! But the crown jewel of the trip was our visit to Thirsk and the Herriot museum there. We have waited 40 years to get there and we had a wonderful time. Loved hearing Alan's stories and how much he knows about the area.

The James Herriot tour was a “bucket list” item for me and I was thrilled to be able to come to York with my daughter and sister-in-law. I had never seen the movies or television shows but had read all of James Herriot's books several times. Alan was an incredible tour guide: an absolute gentleman and true professional. He makes the tour so interesting because not only is he an expert on the James Herriot subject, but he is also a very learned historian who shares his knowledge in such an easy going way.( Be advised: this is a full day of driving in a car so anyone prone to carsickness may want to consider the amount of time spent driving through the dales and moors. We did walk around the James Herriot museum and stopped for lunch at a pub. We also stretched our legs for a bit in the beautiful countryside). Alan is so welcoming that I felt we became fast friends. Indeed, I really look forward to a return trip to York someday and feel sure Alan will arrange something interesting and wonderful. Thank you Alan for helping to create a wonderful memory!

This was our second tour with Alan and just like 3 years before, it was wonderful! We had done the Herriot tour in 2016 and this year we concentrated more on the moors and the coast. We had been on the road for about 6 weeks and this was our last day before heading home. Many many sightseeing tours and long days were behind us and we knew that coming on the train from London, touring the moors, and then riding back to London was going to be a very full day. We were excited about seeing Alan again, but very tired of touring! But guess what? Alan's unique ability to make things fun turned us around immediately! The day flew by and we had a wonderful time! I have posted some pics of our day and the lovely places we visited. Thank you, Alan, for another day full of precious memories!

I would like to show my 14 year old grandson some of the Yorkshire beauties, but to be honest with you, cannot afford a full-day tour. Would you recommend a half-day in the range of £250 or is that impossible?

Is a one day tour sufficient time to see the Yorkshire Dales or would you recommend a couple of days?

Our website gives all the details about what you get with our tours, you are not part of a large group and can go at your own pace, to get the best of Yorkshire we suggest 1 day in the Dales, and 1 day visiting the Moors, the daily rate for your own driver guide and vehicle at your disposal is £250 per day
