We spent a delightful afternoon on this Hadran Wall site. Very interesting to see ruins and the layout of the small town ,which had all amenities you'd need( public baths, toilets, shops , official buildings.)
In addition an excellent museum with good AV presentations and a nice cafe. I imagine it will be crowded in the summer

Although the weather was very damp, we really enjoyed our visit. The surrounding countryside is beautiful in the borders and the site is lovely. It’s well organised and the exhibition is very interesting including many artefacts from the digs - shoes, jewellery, and letters including the earliest letters by women in Roman times.
We had a hot lunch in the cafe and the tea with cake layer. The staff were so friendly. One server, Lorna said she couldn’t do anything about the weather but can serve good hot drinks - just the job !
There’s a reconstruction of the wall and many outlines of buildings that have been excavated.

Unexpectedly fascinating visit. A spectacular site with a fantastic exhibition and museum. So interesting to hear the story of the archeology and to see the results. We were told we needed 2 to 3 hours for the visit, we didn’t believe that, but we certainly did!
A wonderful insight into Roman life in Britain nearly 2000 years ago .

Wonderful site, Well laid out and plenty to see. Very interesting, good signage and the museum explains everything. The best site to visit on Hadrian's Wall.

After a trek down from the car park, was greeted by really nice staff members that explained everything. Had a look around the museum, which was really well done with some great exhibits. Especially the tablets, so interesting to read about normal every day life.
The site itself is a must for anyone interested in the Roman Empire, the reconstruction of the wall is really well done.
After I went to the cafe, again the staff were amazing, the coffee and sandwich was really good value for money and really tasty.
All in all had a great day here and the Roman Army Museum, I had bought the combined saver ticket.

What a great day out. Right from the start welcoming staff, great sights of Roman life, lots to see in the museum and lovely cafe. Spent 4 hours there despite the poor weather, would have stayed longer with better weather so great value

This site is well worth a visit! The archeologists are doing a marvellous job at unearthing the fort and village. It's a lot bigger than I expected! There were lots of signs at the site giving details of what the ruins would have been and audio information was also available. The guide was very knowledgeable and took the time to answer all our questions. the staff were very welcoming.

Very interesting and informative tour by Steve around the fort. Lots of information about life of a roman soldier.
Followed by a walk round the museum and visit to Cafe. Recommend you include the Roman Museum ticket as that is well worth a visit too.

Great place in Northumberland, first time going and I've lived 35 minutes away my entire life! There's free guides if you're lucky enough to go at the right time who were full of knowledge. After a few hours at the dig site we then walked down to the museum which was amazing and full of things to see. Cheeky toastie once we finished at the onsite cafe before walking back to the car park. Originally wanted to do both Vindolanda and the Roman War Museum before it closed until spring, however we unexpectedly spent around 4-5 hours at Vindoalanda. Well worth a visit and will 100% be back again !

Is this a good attraction for very energetic 3&6 year old boys?

Vindolanda has an extensive outdoor area when your boys can explore the excavated remains. The museum is a great place for them to learn about life nearly 2,000 years ago, and they can view the toy sword used by a young child from that time within our museum.

Not really a question, as such. That's such a shame! We had some lovely people to deal with, so perhaps, if you could remember who it was who was rude to you, maybe the staff there could give her some extra training, or alter her attitude. It DOES say at reception that the cafe is there for people who have paid for entry, but maybe they could do something to alter that, so that people can enter the cafe from outside of the site, but are barred from the site itself, unless they buy a ticket. It would need some structural changes, but if they are dedicated enough, that could possibly be done.

Hi Fran,
We went on a guided tour at 10.30am on Saturday 5th May. There was another one on later, maybe at 1pm? The guided tour is included in the admission price, and meets inside the courtyard at the western entrance. The other entrance is at the museum end of the site. The tour is conducted by a volunteer, ours was great. I highly recommend a tour!

Why don't you allow dogs?

With the exception of assistance dogs, no pets are allowed within Roman Vindolanda Fort and Museum or the Roman Army Museum.
We are often asked to explain our no dogs’ policy within both Roman Vindolanda Museum and Fort and the Roman Army Museum.
Roman Vindolanda is classed as a scheduled ancient monument and the remains along with the grounds and buildings require careful protection to ensure that visitors can continue to enjoy for many years to come.
Introducing pets to a crowded and unfamiliar environment can pose safety risks for both people and animals, and our policy is applied to protect the visitors (many of whom are children) as well as the monument.
Our sites are used year round by schools and visiting families and while we appreciate that the majority of owners are responsible and their dogs are well trained, there are a few however that are not. It is known that even well trained animals placed in a busy environment surrounded by unfamiliar people and potentially other animals, their behaviour may become unpredictable.
Dog excrement is a known hazard and as a live archaeological site, we also require to ensure that the archaeological material is also not contaminated and our volunteers are not put at risk.

I intend to visit in December, as we are visiting family for Xmas, we have two small dogs and noted that they are not allowed on site. We understand this, but would it be possible for them to sit outside the café and is there an area we can walk them first and leave them in the car.
Many thanks

There are walking routes within the local are which are suitable for dogs, although some fields may contain livestock and will require dogs to be on lead. Dog owners are able to return to their vehicle to check on animals during their visit at any time and re-enter the museum / site.
