In the village of Edwinstowe so had to take the opportunity to visit the Sherwood visitor centre from where we walked to the Great Oak. Not a bad or long walk but not recommended if you have walking difficulties, you can however hire a mobility scooter at the visitor centre.
Worth having a look at if you are in the vicinity.

Thank you for your recent review and rating, and for highlighting the availability of the mobility scooter for visitors with accessibility needs.
It is much appreciated.

Living local I visit Sherwood Forest on a regular basis and like to walk the red route. I am becoming increasingly concerned about the number of dogs off lead with no recall that are increasing becoming a nuisance.
I was returning from my walk today and came across a couple who had four dogs between them, 3 off lead one on a lead. The 3 off lead instantly started running towards me at speed and started surrounding me barking. I was terrified and thought I was going to be attacked. Absolutely no recall whatsoever.
I know dogs should be on a lead in certain areas and at certain times of the year for example when ground birds are nesting, but could this not also be the case on all marked walking cycling routes around the forest?

Thanks for your post and apologies for the delayed reply. I was very concerned to read about what was clearly a very upsetting experience for you.
We are continually looking at ways of encouraging all dog owners to ensure their pets are fully under their control while in the forest. Your feedback will help inform our on-going discussions of how we can address this issue.
Thank you again for taking the time to post and please be assured that it will help us to try to improve the experience for all visitors.

Had a wonderful visit. It's been easily 40 years since I have been here and this visit brought back some wonderful memories. Such a wonderful place to visit by yourself or with family/friends.

You could EASILY spend hours exploring the various trails and different parts of the forest! I only had limited time in the area, but I could still explore a few miles, amd the weather was brilliant. Definitely worth checking out! There's a trail for all time limits, haha - whether hours or 30 minutes, the forest has a lot to offer.
The only thing I would wish for is the Sherwood Arrow, which doesn't run so frequently on bank holidays. I understand why - drivers need a break too - but if you don't have a car, it's hard to get to otherwise.

Excellent place for a day out either solo or as a family/group. Large area of forest land consisting of many clearly marked walks and trsils where you easily find a hidden place to relax. Situated on the edge of the town of Edwinstowe, where legend has it that Robin Hood and Maid Marian were married. At one point, the forest covered a much larger area, but over time, it has reduced into different areas, some of which are now other country parks in Nottinghamshire. Modern Visitors Centre is available to explire giving legendary tales of Robin Hood's use of Sherwood Forest. Plenty of activities for children to take part in, including bow and arrows and dressing up costumes, to name a couple. A large car park situated at the south of the forest allows easy access from the A614. Well worth a visit.

I've been Robin Hood obsessed since I was a child so Sherwood Forest has long been on my bucket list.
It's a busy spot which is understandable but I'd advise wandering off the main paths to find a spot to be immersed in the forest. To me, trees are my happy place and I'd happily sit beneath a canopy of leaves in silence just breathing in all that peacefulness. On a sunny July day in Sherwood Forest, that was difficult. An open air film screen was playing Moana and even The Great Oak had an ice cream van next to it, quite the contrast between ancient and modern.
I'm glad I went, it was a dream come true but I maybe should've chosen a quieter time of year to go.

Such a beautiful place, we took our 2 dogs and really enjoyed a walk around on the pathways. Loved how the maps gives you different routes. We took the blue route to see the Major Oak!
Weather was really hot so we stopped at multiple picnic benches to rest and allow the dogs some shade. We also used the cafe on site, we both had sausage rolls each and a piece of cake each. Absolutely beautiful! The staff in the cafe were really nice and welcoming too.
We parked in the main car park, £5 for the day which we thought was really good.
We are already planning a visit back!

Would a trip to Nottingham be complete without visiting Sherwood Forrest the home of Robin Hood and his Merry Men?
About a 20 min drive from the centre of Nottingham. It has a large carpark on the opposite side of the entrance.
The path is fairly flat all the way around so access should be okay for almost everyone. There are craft and gift shops along the way and even treats for your pooches!
Cost was okay time taken no more than two hours
We were greeted with dressed up characters for the Robin Hood period. Lots of facts and historical information to read. The highlight of the whole trip has to be seeing the old oak tree which was apparently the hideout.
You can't go near it though as its protected by a fence and many of the large branches are now being supported by support stands to protect it.
It is a place for all ages and imagination!

Good for a day out on summer. Just be careful of little insects around. Helpful rangers to give advice.

We’ve just had a fantastic walk around the forest on clear, well laid out paths. Really peaceful and clean. We thought the £5 to park represents really good valve for money looking at the facilities provided. One of our “benchmarks” is when dogs are welcomed inside a cafe and thankfully, he was, as we chose the day the authorities decided to water the forest! When dogs aren’t welcomed we take it that our money isn’t either and spend it elsewhere.
The food in the cafe was hot and quick and we were served by really cheerful people.
I would recommend a day out here to anyone, even in the rain.

I think 7 - 11 year olds are ideal ages for sherwood pines: cycling, walking, things to do on the way round and loads of room for a picnic, football, rounders and other games. I think there's a 'Go Ape' too. It's a great place if you like the outdoors. You need good weather though as nearly everything is outside

Hello and thank you for your question. I'd definitely visit the Major Oak - it's a huge and very ancient English Oak tree, still flourishing after around 800 years of life! The Visitor Centre has a café and shops if you need souvenirs or lunch, and a small exhibition on Robin Hood, who - according to legend - once roamed this leafy woodland. If you have time left why not also visit Rufford Abbey - 3 miles away - for the medieval ruins, lakeside walks and parkland.

How far is it to walk to the Major Oak from the car park?

Not very far - maybe 20 minutes? It was very easy for my 3 year old to do. Saw all sorts walking it. X
