‪Visited this really interesting house which was homely and understated despite the wealth of the previous owners. Inspiring story of Lord Nuffield and his incredible philanthropy. Terry was an excellent guide, full of knowledge but didn't overwhelm us, able to answer all our questions and brought the house to life - thankyou!‬

‪Guided around this marvelous house by a local gent who had local knowledge.
I of course knew about Herbert Morris and his car empire, but little about his philanthropy. Something today's Millionaires could well take note of.
The modest house belies his fortune, money was spent on more deserving causes, something you will learn about on a tour of this lovely property.‬

‪Wasn't sure what to expect, but found this a very different and interesting house. It is not especially grand but has some very interesting features and really tells a story of the owner (Wm Morris of Morris Motors) and his wife.‬

‪An excellent place to visit, a home and a museum giving substance to the people who had lived there. I had been dreading another dull museum but found this house fascinating and the guides were very informative with an excellent knowledge of the house, the motor works and the family's history. The gardens are worth a visit and the artifacts inside are unusual. We learnt a lot about the man who made equipment for hospitals and about his charitable works, e.g. the iron lung. Well worth a visit.‬

‪This National Trust experience is made by the volunteer-led tour. Our tour guide, Theresa, was incredibly knowledgeable and informative as she took us around the house (groups of 7). The house itself was built as part of the arts and crafts movement but underwent quite significant changes in the 1930s. The key pull of the property is to learn more about the incredible philanthropy of Lord Nuffield, who had an impact on so many areas, such as medicine and agriculture. Theresa really brought the story to life. It made a nice change from NT properties where you go from room to room with very little sense of the people who lived there, and where there is a tendency to over-focus on the ornaments and furniture on display. Some areas of the property are in need of investment (e.g. the windows). I strongly encourage NT to provide further funding for the property.‬

‪One cold day in July, we visited Nuffield Place, home of the motor pioneer, Lord Nuffield. Pleasant and knowledgable volunteers on hand, and outside the house an old car with a dicky seat, something I had heard of, but not inspected previously. The house is said to be much as it was in the days of the Nuffields, Nuffield College to whom it was left having made minimal use of it, and changed little.Immediately noticeable that it is looking rather tired outside and ready for the painters to spruce it up. No cafe (Covid?). The first room shown was a large billiard room, built onto the front of the house in an ugly way. Lord Nuffield’s brilliance lay in business and mechanics, and as I went round, I felt that he wasn’t particularly aesthetically aware, for example, this extension for the billiard room. Interesting to hear of the plot to kidnap him, and of the way his reception of the freedom of Coventry coincided with the abdication of Edward VIII, so that an alteration had to be made to the award citation. Lady Nuffield had trained as a seamstress, and continued to enjoy sewing, altering their robes for the coronation, when they arrived from the tailors, less perfect than anticipated. She also liked paintings of bunches of flowers, of which an extensive selection is on display. The main rooms were furnished in a 1930s suburban style, and the bedrooms interested me more. Between Lord and Lady Nuffield’s bedrooms was a very light and pleasant roofed in former balcony, my favourite room.Lord Nuffield was a poor sleeper and had a workstation complete with tools in a cupboard in his room.
Despite his successful motor business, his real passion was for philanthropy and he gave the equivalent of £11 billion to good causes, mainly medical. There is a small shop, plenty of parking and pretty gardens. Many NT houses leave me wishing I could move in and live there, but this house didn’t have a very cheerful atmosphere, and I hope that the little Scotty dogs the Nuffields kept made the place feel warm and homely for them. Lord Nuffield was a chain smoker, and throughout the house there were indications of this habit, for example, cut glass cigarette rests at the formal dining table, and an automatic match lighter in another room. Interesting but now rather shocking to behold.‬

‪Nuffield House was surprisingly low key. We had to book a slot to visit which was easy and worked well. A small group was guided around the house. The guide who took our group was very knowledgeable, he was interested in Lord Nuffield and the house and this was passed on very well. I didn’t get his name but he mentioned taking Nuffield A levels.
The house inside is homely rather than grand. This homely feel made the house more special as it felt as though the family were still in residence. There is a lot to see and take in. The grounds were well maintained and lovely to walk around. Well with a visit.‬

‪What a down to earth character Lord Nuffield must have been - the house is in no way grand and, unfortunately, it does look in need of rather a lot of TLC (I'm sure the many flat roofs don't help.) The interiors are comfortable and homely rather than grand and you could almost be walking into your grandparents house. The only nod to grandeur is the Billiards Room which is in a wing on its own and the tool cupboard in his Lordship's bedroom gives a fascinating insight to the restless nature of the man. Really interesting‬

‪Nuffield House was lovely! Its a smaller national trust house with a recent history. It was owned by William Morris, the car manafacturer, and it was very interesting to hear about his philanthropic efforts. Its a smaller house but the volunteers are lovely, the talk was brilliant and the man who welcomed us in was great. The tea room is a bit lacking both food wise and space wise - the brownies were really dry - but young lady serving was lovely. The gardens are small but pleasant, loved the rock garden!‬
