‪The walk is still as nice as it always has been, but I wanted to give an update with regards the covid situation. There are people still using the canal path: dog walkers, walkers, runners and cyclists, but people tend to be polite and step out of the way. As for the actual nature reserve, the good news is that sections of the fence have been moved out of the way at both ends to allow entry without needing to touch the kissing gates, although the path is a little overgrown (or there is a downed branch) at one end. Do be careful of the stinging nettles and brambles. It is possible to cycle or push a pram/stroller through the nature reserve now, although I still think the gaps in the fence might be difficult to get wider wheelchairs through.

The yellow flag irises are past their best. Lots of ducks and a few swans and morehens were seen yesterday. I didn't see any cygnets and the baby ducks are almost as big as their parents now. The ducks and even one of the swans seemed to have no fear, walking/swimming towards me, so perhaps they are hungry.‬

‪In the quiet green Fields of Reading, West of the A33 Tarmac Artery, are the floodplains of the River Kennet, and close by the Metro Waste Dump is the Fobney Island Nature Reserve. Accessible by car on Island Road towards the Fobney Pumping Station, which hosts the refurbished Fobney Lock on the Kennet and Avon Canal, and the slip weir. A small carpark nearby the Lock and Bridge.
The Pumping Station is worth a look around but subject for another day.

South of the lock is the field gate into the reserve. Follow the towpath west along the Canal. Lots of wildlife and nature along the canal, although upon my visit the banks were rather naked having been subject to a Winter Tidy Up. A few ducks looking for summer homes, a lone mute swan, and a swarm of starlings shouting insults from the trees.
Otherwise nothing exceptional, but full of hope for the coming summer. After about half a mile there is a wicket gate to a bird observation hide. A good view over the wetlands, but this early in the season, just pre-sale paddling visitors looking for the good sites for breeding. A Red Kite floats overhead but probably nesting in Southcote.
Continuing along the towpath for another half mile there is a footbridge over the Kennet, and turning left past a riffle wier leads to a footpath somewhat under maintenance and very muddy but tracks along the Kennet river back to Island Road. Not a lot to see except for Bullrushes but again a promise for the Summer. About a 2 km walk.
FINR is a good chance for a walk and once the greenery recovers will provide access to all sorts of bugs and winged beasties for the children to enjoy, but why spoil a good walk. There is a made up track from the Bird hide back to the entry gate, that may enable wheelchair accessibility.‬

‪Speaking as an angler, this is a brilliant place to go, Chub, Barbel and Pike feature well in this area as well as Perch and the usual silver fish.‬

‪如你所见,几乎没有什么人,到处都是寻麻草,稍微不小心擦到脸上腿上就会很疼,跟荒野一样的地方,孩子有点儿害怕!没敢往里面走!位置比较偏僻!‬

‪A lovely place to stroll through/round and can be access on foot of pushbike along the Kennet & Avon Canal from Reading or Burgfield Road. It is well maintained and will improve with age I'm sure. Good signage and knowledge of what species you could expect to see.‬

‪This is a new-ish nature reserve, laid out a few years ago and has still to mature properly. None-the-less it's turning into a little gem, a good place to see water birds, native plant species or just to enjoy some peace and quiet. It's not easy to get to, being on the south of town, but it's quite near the town dump - not spoiled by it !! - the water treatment plant and Fobney Lock. I usually walk - about 40 mins out of town along the canal towpath.‬

‪Along the edge of the River Kennet is a wetland nature reserve with sections open to the public. If you drive to the Reading Council Recycling Centre and then turn right down the little laneway you will come to a spot where people park. Parking is free as is entry into the reserve. Walk over the first bridge to find the sheep gate style entry into the reserve and take a lovely stroll along the wide flat path (shame about the gate as the path would definitely accommodate strollers and probably wheelchairs too) following the line of the water. At the right time of year there is wildlife to see, we saw some ducks, swans and moorhens, but were probably a few weeks too early for chicks, although we did manage to photograph a big family of geese further along the River. We did notice a few bird hides, which would suit the keen. Wish there was a few seats along the path as it would make a lovely spot to just sit and watch the birds on the water. I have been several times as it is close to home, this time I took my mother. I recommend walking a little further along the river once you have reached the far gate to see the zig zag weir.‬
