A great range of exhibits nicely presented in what seems to be a purpose built building. The staff were friendly. These is a nice cafe with outdoor seating in the garden. Admission is free. Donations are welcome.

So interesting to see the remnants of Berkshire’s agricultural heritage. Pleasant and informative staff. Also an excellent literary archive for researchers.

We had a great time at this museum finding a lot to interest us. Having lived in Reading for many, many years, I’m now ashamed to say I’d never visited the MERL before but will certainly pay a return visit before too long. We particularly enjoyed room with the carts set out by area/county. We were lucky to visit on a sunny day so we had some lunch sitting outside and explored the grounds looking at the wildlife gardens and the amazing vines (with grapes).
The staff were super friendly. They were particularly helpful when I’d done a recce at the weekend, as I was worried about parking as my friend has some mobility problems at the moment. There is limited parking on site,

With a luscious garden, fantastic displays and climate-conscious projects, great exhibitions and mini games for the family to enjoy- visiting the MERL will always be a pleasant experience!

This place is an absolute gem for families with young children. Such a lot to.do, including a museum trail, colouring sheets, a table of farmyard toys and a whole shelf full of Ladybird books..and that's before you get outside into the wonderful garden with a climb-on tractor, chickens and much more. The cafe is excellent and the staff are friendly. Highly recommend!

Was a bit apprehensive going to this place, as its a rural museum in a city centre, and thought parking might be an issue.
As it happens, we managed to get a car parking spot, and after speaking to the receptuonist, there was no need for a parking permit.
The museum itself is well organised, and we spent about 2hrs going around. My youngest daughter was given a tick sheet, where she had to ‘hunt’ for rats on exhibits, which kept her entertained.
Staff were really helpful.

Only a small museum but plenty to see.
Some wonderful examples of old equipment with some great explanations of their usages and specific variations.
Displays provides a range of stories about rural life and how it has changed over time and area.
A lovely little shop & café also. Staff were friendly & helpful.
Worth a Visit.

Excellent university museum. Modern displays of rural affairs & food production. Nice cosy café and friendly staff. Free entry.

Lovely museum which is well worth a two-hour visit or more. The exhibits are varied and the associated signage is excellent. I went down the left-hand side to start with to enjoy looking at and reading about the numerous artefacts and, after turning around at the end, came back on the other side and loved reading about and inspecting (hands-off!) the farm carriages etc.
The museum shop has some nice stuff and the cafe was also great - a mug of hot chocolate and a slice of ever-so-tasty fruit cake for under a fiver!
Entry to the museum is free but a £5 donation is suggested and I was happy to pay that.
Previous reviewers have commented about the friendliness of the staff - they were so right about that!

What a lovely Museum. My son lives in Reading and we have visited this museum several times. His daughter is 4 and she absolutely loved the big garden area, especially the tractor and Romany caravan with crochet toys- played for a long time and really fired her imagination.
The Museum itself is very informative and well done. I was particularly interested in Huntley and Palmers history.
We had lunch and coffee which I thought was very reasonably priced.
Staff very friendly. Would definitely recommend.

I have 2 paddle like ridged boards that were used on a small farm in the 40's for cream or butter making. Would you be interested in having them?
