Dunster By Candlelight was just magical. Such a lovely experience and have always wanted to go. Recommend getting the coach from a pre-organised car park as saves faffing around and grab some food while there, plenty of stalls etc. Great entertainment and wrap up warm!

This was our second visit to the castle, and we were fortunate that the Christmas decorations were still up and carols were being played which made it even more magical. Lots of history and family stories, fantastic views as it is on top of the hill. Children were involved with finding the hidden robins, a lovely touch. The guides, volunteers and paid, were helpful and friendly. We had lunch at the watermill cafe', very pleasant.
We will go again.

My husband liked the inside of the castle but I felt underwhelmed. It didn't come up with all the goodies I (perhaps childishly) hoped to see in a castle with bags of history - access to towers, dungeons, huge kitchens etc. We could have been in an NT house (not a castle) and not a particularly memorable one. However, the grounds and the watermill are well worth the parking fee (so skip the ££ payment to see inside) and the flour I bought from the mill on my visit is lovely to work with and makes very nice bread.

Very very disappointing. Visited on Monday to see the gardens only to find it was closed due to decorations for Halloween?? A lot of people were surprised as it wasn’t on the web site. Visited again today, gardens and Castle again closed, and once again website didn’t advise of this. Even more disappointing was the notice that says Castle and Gardens will be closed Monday to Friday from November until March. I am disgusted in National trust. Money saving decisions for sure but what effect on the local economy and the loyal visitors who visit all year around? They will lose a lot of support

Our first sight of Dunster Castle was from the road - very impressive as it stands on a hill with it's turrets rising above the trees that surround it.
Despite being a weekday & a bit out of season the car park was soon filling up.
There is a car parking charge for non N. T. members plus , obviously , the cost of entry.
Good value if you are making a day of it ( which it deserves ).
We only visited the gardens & some of Dunster village as we had our pet parrot with us but even then we spent a good 5 hrs at Dunster.
The gardens are really superb. The South Terrace garden is very sub tropical & the views to the surrounding countryside wonderful. Winding down from the Castle walls we went into the River Garden which is really exceptional with it's bridges , Giant Sequoia trees & Tree Ferns. At the end of the River Garden stands a working water mill & cafe & beyond access to picturesque Dunster village.
Another little garden not to be missed is the Dream Garden situated not far from Castle toilet block.
Friendly , helpful staff. Would like another visit to see inside the castle &spend more time in the village.

Spent an afternoon here, wandering around the gardens and then inside the house itself. It is one of those places where National Trust seem to have gone out of their way to pack it with all kinds of things.
Beautiful gardens with great views over the surrounding countryside.
Inside, the house is fascinating with lots of quirky little things, such as listening on the butler's speakerphone to hear what is happening in the kitchen and how to lay a table for dinner. Also, as it was near Halloween, 12 "ghosts" to spot.

Recently one of the National Papers was offering a free family day pass to an NT property - so armed with the valuable piece of paper we arrived at the castle - in a torrential downpour in September.
The rather expensive car parking was a short way from the castle, with the result that most of the visitors on the day we visited were rather damp. That was the only negative of the day.
The castle is a fascinating experience - from a mediaeval fortress to more recent times when it was a family home. There was a number of NT volunteers on hand to answer any questions - they all seemed to have a great knowledge of the property.
We did manage to find a break in the weather during which we look at the gardens - beautifully maintained and managed.
Well worth visiting - and make sure you have enough time to visit the village as well. Unfortunately we didn't have time, so another visit may be needed.

Staff were so welcoming and the castle and grounds are fantastic. It was however spoilt by the number of dogs around the walks and eating areas. They were growling at passers by and some growling at each other with a couple of them actually fighting as we walked past. Those on long leads meant that if owners did not pull them in then we had to make a detour round them. Not pleasant for non dog owners.

Ik voelde me beetje thuis in downton abbey.

Hi David. Why did you say that there was a Kneller portrait? You know perfectly well, it is a Faber mezzotint based on the Kneller portrait! From David S!!

I know it is a Faber mezzotint. I just was so excited at making the connection weeks after the visit I did not make it clear that it was based on the Kneller portrait of the rather dislikable Mohun.

Do you have to book for the kitchen and attic tours or are the just accessible along with the rest of the house?
Thanks

No booking, just go to welcome desk in house and ask, spaces limited so be early, think they are approx hourly, times shown on a frame board to the left of the main door entrance before the steps

Is it possible for a wheel chair user to visit?
Pinballsurgery
كامبريدج, UK35 مساهمة
The previous post is correct, however there is a shuttle which goes up to the castle from the car park and there are extensive areas of level ground around the castle itself with some beautiful views. There are entrance ramps and disabled facilities and the castle itself is still worth seeing even if the ground floor is only accessible.

The gardens. Not sure about the castle as such but you don't necessarily need to visit the castle the gardens are as beautiful as castle. however some slopes.

Sorry I don't know, but the national trust website is pretty useful. They do have buggies to run people from the car park to the castle, but not sure about the facilities inside.

Where is the NT car park near Dunster Castle
Sarah C

The car park is in the grounds of the castle but is also very close to the village it's self. If you or a member of your party has low mobility I did notice that the castle operates a mini bus from the car park up to the castle. Hope this was helpful:-)
