A truly beautiful building with stunning stained glass windows. It's amazing when you look at all of the stonework, windows and the building in general that this was mostly built by hand.

Huge Building steeped in history, do one of the many tours, the lovely volunteers know their subject matter. Entry is by donation, this helps with the running costs.

This is a really excellent tour behind the scenes of the cathedral where you can really understand how the cathedral was built and now operates. the two guides John and Simon are outstanding in their knowledge and bringing everything to life. If you are just thinking about this, then DO IT

High Parts Tour.
John and Simon were great guides, very informative and knowledgeable. The tour was fascinating and a great experience to see hidden parts of the cathedral. Highly recommended.

We'd been meaning to visit Wells Cathedral for many years and finally got the chance last Saturday. The cathedral itself is spectacular and has many wonderful features that any medievalist would love. We were extremely lucky to be taken on a tour of the building by volunteer Mark Saunders, an extremely knowledgable and lovely historian that highlighted hundreds of details we would have missed otherwise. We had the pleasure of meeting Basil the cat, too! <3 Thank you so much to Wells Cathedral and Mr Mark Saunders for an unforgettable visit.

We attended Christmas Eve Service. I checked the photography policy beforehand, which the website states;
‘Photography
Photography is encouraged, but please refrain from using flash inside, and from photographing, videoing or recording any services, concerts or rehearsals. Thank you.’
Whilst we were waiting for the service to commence, I used my (switched to silent, flash turned off) mobile phone to photograph the ceiling.
A woman staff member came up to me, and said; ‘No phones!’
I pointed out that lots of other people were using phones and cameras. She replied that she knew this information, and that ‘it was difficult to keep a handle on’.
There was a man directly in front of me taking photos. There was another man in the row in front of me with a huge camera. The woman did not use ‘please’. I felt singled out. It soured our Christmas Eve.
I have changed my mind about spending our Christmas money on a Heritage Pass, as a result of the above experience.

Do take one of their guided tours. We caught one at midday - lasted over an hour and was free. There is so much to see that you would miss without the guide's knowledge.

Truly spectacular!
This is one of the most breathtaking cathedrals I’ve visited in the UK. I was truly impressed to see such grandeur, in the small quaint town of Wells. The mind boggles to think of the pure genius required to design and build such intricate architectural masterpiece. Take time to admire the cathedral on the outside, as much as you do the inside; there’s as much history, as there is beauty to take in. I highly recommend to read about the history of the cathedral, before you visit. There are Guides and Welcomers to assist with questions, and guided tours; which is the most time efficient way to get through all the highlights of this magnificent building. This is an enormous place, with enough to see and learn about from eager staff, that you can easily spend an entire day and may not see it all. In hindsight, I might have carefully reviewed their website, before my visit, to make the most of my time there, and to identify areas of personal interest; but sadly I didn’t. As usual, in buildings such as this, I recommend comfortable shoes to safely climb uneven and worn stairs, and walk on medieval stone floors. It’s also quite chilly inside, so warm clothes is a must. I found the map & guide pamphlet provided with my ticket, quite useful; it helped keep my walk around neatly organized, and I didn’t miss any must see spots. The cafe and gift shop were quite nice too. Photos allowed inside inmost areas of the cathedral. This is truly an extraordinary place, that requires leisurely time to fully appreciate. I stayed in town a couple of days to see everything, without rushing. I highly recommend a visit.

The best Cathedral I've ever seen. An amazing step back into history.
Most cathedrals are great but Wells is spectacular. It's so well looked after, inside, out, staff, everything. See to believe.

Can you bring dogs in
Richard S
براكنيل, UK612 مساهمة
Guide dogs, hearing dogs and assistance dogs are welcome in the Cathedral at all times. Other dogs are welcome in the Cathedral providing they are on a lead, well-behaved and accompanied at all times by their owner(s). There is no provision for dogs to be left with staff or volunteers and any dogs who bark consistently or are in distress/are disruptive can be asked to leave with their owners. Dogs are not allowed on any tour that goes above ground-level (which includes the Library and High Parts Tours). Water bowls are available in the Cathedral and dog biscuits are available for sale in the cafe.

What happens if you don't "donate"? Do they give you dirty looks and publicly shame you?

the staff put a lot of pressure on families to donate, really didn't appreciate it at all. not very 'christian' of them

Just wanted to say I so agree with gems Review, when we went there was no way we could have got past the ladies on duty without paying our donation, it wasn't a donation it was a entrance fee , so wrong.

What was the question?
Jennifer M
وايموث, UK14 مساهمة
Is it accessible to disabled and do they have wheelchairs available to use please.
WellsCathedral
Wells, UK
Hi Jennifer. Most of Wells Cathedral is accessible. The Chapter House and the Library are not unfortunately accessible due to uneven staircases and the area in the south cloister to the transept is difficult to negotiate due to the stairs and a heavy medieval doorway. Wheelchairs are available and can be pre-booked by calling 01749 672773. Hope that helps.

I’m coming to London in April and plan on doing only day trips. I know there is not a train station in Wells so my question is this: where is the closest train station and do I get a cab from there? I’d like to visit Wells again. Any suggestions are helpful and appreciated.
WellsCathedral
Wells, UK
Hi. The nearest train station to Wells is Castle Cary and you can take a taxi from there to Wells. Another option would be London to Bath Spa and again, a taxi or bus can be picked up from there. Hope that helps.

We had the dogs with us and they were allowed as far as the cathedral shop, which I thought was very good.

What can you do with children at Wells cathedral

I think if you go on an tour, and get a good guide (I recommend Malcolm) they will point out things that will interest children. There are several things we learned about the cathedral that would interest children. I guess it depends on their ages.

Hi Jim, I was your guide so that you for your glowing comments obviously. Just to be clear to anyone reading this review any donation is entirely voluntary and is to help maintain this wonderful building you so much enjoyed. Our guided tours are free and as volunteer guides we ourselves do not charge anything. Any tips etc given to us go striaght in the donations box.
I am really glad you enjoyed your visit - spread the word!

Charles, most sensible people know and are hugely grateful for the contribution of the volunteers, without whose help we are sure most of these wonderful places would not be able to exist in the current form. Please be assured we ( most ) value your help and expertise in the highest. Wishing you and all of yours and friends the very best. Thank you !

Hi Sarah! Thank you for your question, and I'm so sorry it's taken so long to get back to you. It doesn't cost to look around, but we would welcome any donation you could give to support the Cathedral.
