Unbelievable street and retains so many features and architecture of the period. All very clean and quiet. A must visit.

Vicars place is a well preserved examine of a historic row of houses. But then that’s the beauty of Wells.
The smallest city in England packs a bunch in terms of cultural sights from its market, an amazing cathedral through to the bishops palace. Guessing it is much busier in Spring and Summer but that’s fine with me seeing as we visited in Feb. Really nice to just walk around. Don’t miss Vicars Place with its historical houses

This is a lovely, historic street with striking row of old houses, just off the cathedral close. It is reputedly one of the oldest intact, or unaltered streets in Europe which has retained its character.
This is simply a street open to the public but definitely worth a short look.

Quite fascinating. The properties are really interesting and the architecture in general is quite ornate and exquisit.

Vicars close will be becoming hopefully the ultimate visitor experience, having being granted money to actually spend on this step back in time place bringing some of what we dont see up to date & being allowed to see inside some of the buildings & gaining knowledge of what times were like. Very excited to see what & how it will all work & benefit the Close & Wells as a tourist destination.

I know it can't be helped but it was recycle day (Wed) when we visited and it did rather detract from its beauty, so if you can avoid a Wednesday than I think you may enjoy it even more.

A great experience, able to see our history firsthand. We also enjoyed the opportunity to mentally compare the different building techniques observed during visits to other historical sites.

Zodra je de toegangspoort aan de zijde van de kathedraal bent gepasseerd aanschouw je de oudste nog bestaande woonstraat in Europa, het 14e eeuwse Vicar's Close. Wij zouden het een hofje noemen, maar dan wel één van een zeer fors formaat. Dit hof werd in de 14e eeuw gebouwd i.o.v. Ralph of Shrewsbury, de toenmalige bisschop van Wells en Bath. Het hof is zo'n 140 meter lang en enkele meters breed, langwerpig dus en bestaat uit vrijwel identieke woninkjes, oorspronkelijk bedoeld voor de "lagere" priesters verbonden aan de kathedraal. In de linkse rij woningen tref je een afwijkend gebouw aan .. breder en van een andere steensoort gebouwd. Dit is Shrewsbury House, genoemd naar de stichter van het hof .. wsl diende het als gemeenschappelijke eetzaal. Het hof wordt afgesloten door een ander afwijkend gebouw, de kapel, waarvan de tweede bouwlaag werd gebruikt als kerkelijke bibliotheek. Gebouwd als slotstuk, in 1420. Prachtig gebouwtje, rijk gedecoreerd en met mooi glas-in-lood. De lengte van het hof wordt geaccentueerd door de identieke hoge schoorstenen op de huisjes .. mooi effect. Indrukwekkend en zeer de moeite waard om te gaan zien!

Tranquil setting and a step back in time with some excellent architecture and jackdaws, spolit only pehaps by the presence of cars. Full of so much character its a shams building scannot talk and straight out of mediaeval history. right opposite the cathedral so the clergy didn't take much time in getting across the road.

This was one of the most remarkable old mediaeval streets I have ever seen, and yet you could easily miss it if you don't have a map or know where to look. Beautiful houses, well restored (in the main) and still is use. Originally build to house the vicars choral at the Cathedral. It would be great to know (in general terms) who lives there now .... !
