‪We watched the recent performance of Macbeth, the woke version!
So many unnecessary changes within the play and a completely unfunny
scene with the porter doing stand up 'comedy.' Scottish accents were difficult to understand at times and the first half was far too long.We noticed that many people did not return to their seats after the interval.
Certainly would not recommend.‬

‪The theatre itself and the staff are great. The play, not so.
A few characters stood out, and these were the most experienced actors. The rest mumbled or spoke so badly we missed what they were saying and thus the importance of their speeches.
Also Macbeth was a weak character, and not as in the real Shakespeare.
This play was not for anyone who loves Shakespeare's words, it was just a mishmash of wokeness and bad choices. ‬

‪We visited the theatre to watch a Royal Shakespeare Company production of Macbeth.
We were not disappointed!
From the time we arrived at the theatre to the time we left our experience was nothing short of excellent. Every single member of staff we encountered were welcoming, friendly and above all courteous.
The facilities at the theatre were exceptional. With great attention paid to accessibility and cleanliness.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit and would highly recommend a visit to anyone interested in Shakespeare or the theatre in general.‬

‪This theatre is dedicated to Stratford's renowned, William Shakespeare. It is situated beside the Canal Basin along the scenic River Avon.

The theatre is open for free public access as well as guided tours for 13.50. We opted to wander and explore on our own.

Going up to the tower requires a volunteer to be present for the duration of your time at the top. The enclosed tower provides phenomenal views of Stratford!

Take the time to walk through the costume exhibit and enjoy the elaborate displays of custom made period pieces.

There's a lot of other things to see around the theatre; murals, stained glass windows, sculptures and more! The more you explore, the more you will see. It's all fun!‬

‪This play was advertised by RSC Stratford as “Macbeth by William Shakespeare”, but it would be better described as multi-media style entertainment mash-up package loosely based on a Scottish Story by William Shakespeare.
What went wrong:
• There was no warning that this would be a loose interpretation of Macbeth rather than the play as written by William Shakespeare
• Several of the many characters were gender (or sex?) reversed: e.g. Queen Duncan, Lady Banquo, Princess Malcolm.
• Shakespeare portrays Macbeth as weak and Lady Macbeth at strong. This production showed them in reversed roles.
• Scenes were rewritten, with additions, deletions, and changes to both the text and characters.
• Electronic gizmos appeared on stage at random for no apparent reason.
• A standup comedienne (complete with microphone) was allowed to take over the stage.
• Background “music” was the norm, never mind that it drowned out the actors’ words.
• The actors’ diction and enunciation were often poor (probably by director’s orders). Speaking in strange voices or gabbling their lines is not acceptable when the audience lose the words. The cauldron scene was the worst.
• I saw no function for the knee-high spotlights (2 or 3 of them) shining across the stage and out into the stalls. Are they deliberately intended to dazzle the audience and stop them seeing the debacle on stage. (Evidence: try sitting in stalls K30).
• The worst was saved until last. The fight between Macbeth and Macduff was dire. They took it in turn to share a single dagger and subdue their opponent. Then they threw the dagger away and started again. After an interminable period, they simply rolled around the stage before Macduff dragged a very much alive Macbeth off stage. This scene had no resemblance to Shakespeare’s play.
• The final scene was fabricated for this production. Various people proclaimed “You are Scotland” to a seemingly stage-struck Princess Malcolm.
• There were many school pupils in the audience. I hope they do not write up this event as part of their study of William Shakespeare’s Macbeth. They would need extremely understanding markers.
• I think RSC should urgently contact environmental authorities. Judging by the number of dead birds which fell at random onto the stage, there is a bad case of bird flu in the RSC roof.
• I did carefully study the programme but I failed to find any explanations or justifications for the deviations from Shakespeare’s text.

My friend and I strongly disliked the production. The gentleman seated next to me (K31) disputed that I could dislike the performance more than he did. Customers booking to see a Shakespeare play expect to see a Shakespeare play, not a director’s ego-trip such as this this production. I would have no complaint if it had been advertised as such, and staged in The Other Place. I heard from another friend that audiences at RSC Stratford are being similarly treated to a modern production of As You Like It, again without warning. Shame on RSC Stratford.

I have seen two productions of Macbeth at RSC Stratford. The 1974 production (with Helen Mirren as Lady Macbeth) is one of my most memorable theatre experience. This 2023 production is my worst.‬

‪We booked a behind the scenes tour, although I had to talk my husband into it. The guides were great full of interesting information, we didn't get to see inside the theatre as they had things going on, but what we did see was very interesting. My husband commented after he was glad I talked him into it. In the evening we saw MacBeth, we decided to go with open minds after reading some reviews, and actually enjoyed the performance.‬

‪Have to disagree with many of the other reviews. We thought Macbeth was a stunning visceral, portrayal of pain and the descent into madness.

The staging was minimal but fine, the music and effects added to the strong performances and in particular Reuben Joseph's force of nature that was the tortured Macbeth.

The tension was palpable and I found myself, literally open mouthed at one point.

Was it perfect ? No. But it was intense and engaging. Not much more you can ask really.

Loved it.‬

‪We were really looking forward to seeing an RSC production in Stratford for the first time, but oh dear, this was really dreadful and so disappointing! We struggled to hear what was being said, and not only because of the Scottish accents but the actors mumbled their way through, spoke too quickly and quietly and were just not clear enough. Then there were the loud brass instruments drowning everything out at various times and other very jarring noises from bagpipes and an electronic buzzer in one scene, again really annoying.

It's a modern production that doesn't work. Trying to be far too clever and completely missing the mark. Swapping the genders of some of the characters was pointless and other things didn't make any sense, e.g. why was a mic needed for Macbeth's speech at the end?

The absolute low point was the Porter scene delivered in the style of a stand-up routine but totally unfunny and with highly inappropriate references to the death of Princess Diana and needlessly mocking GCSE students. It was shocking actually!

The two halfs were very unbalanced and the first half was far too long. Some people had obviously had enough by then and there were empty seats after the interval. The much shorter second half was a bit better but the final battle scene was very drawn out and amateurish. By that point we were just willing it to be over and for Macbeth to die as soon as possible so we could go!‬

‪This is a review for the play MacBeth, Paid £103 for two seats in the Upper Circle, we usually buy better seats. View of the stage was still good as stage is quite large. However, the director seems to think it is a good idea to have the actors stand in one corner for most of the play. I expect to not see some action as the RSC does use the walkways as part of the stage but to have on several occasions the actors sometimes just two in the one corner was extracting the michael to say the least. So for a good percentage of the time I could not see the play. Does the director not consider paying customers on one corner of the theatre.
Had pre-ordered interval drinks, they weren't there when I checked was told I was most probably in wrong place even though their system selects nearest place to seats. The member of staff got the drinks and apologised after I showed my email confirming my order and where they were supposed to be.
Went back to listen to the play and noticed dozens of seats opposite in the circle were empty, they most probably got fed up of seeing the back of the heads of the actors for the majority of the play.
Trying to contact RSC about my concerns but website is down.‬

‪Macbeth........definitely more Macduff. Our 1st visit to see an RSC Production, we were really disappointed, so amateur, I reckon the local GCSE School production would have been better.
I think they need to return to the RSC roots & put on non-modernistic adaptations of what should be a classic.
