We saw a review of the Carlo Crivelli - Shadows on the Sky in the Sunday Times and, being a great fan of the The Annunciation, with Saint Emidius (1486), we decided to visit the first UK exhibition devoted to the artist. Being in Birmingham, it meant a day off work, but, as a chance to see several of the Renaissance master's works together in one place, we decided to combine it with a visit to the rest of England's second city.
Director Jonathan Watkins has scored an amazing win: a contemporary art gallery in an impressive Victorian school building showing a British first of a Renaissance master who defies classification! It was great to see the works up close and even to photograph them. It was good for us that there were so few people around, but a shame for the gallery which had managed to assemble paintings from the Vatican, the National Gallery and elsewhere.
My wife also liked the other exhibition which was on at the same time, though I was not enamoured. However, Crivelli was the reason for going and we were not disappointed.

At least it was free and well located no special trip taken. I know Art is subjective and contemporary art particularly installations arouse strong views. However it was a 10 min waste of our time to see and hear pretentious rubbish of failed artists. A level students can be more thought proving and skilled.
Maybe we were unlucky with the exhibits but doesn't feel like worth another pot luck visit

I arrived at 10.15 and while the place appeared open, with two young ladies on reception very busy surfing the internet, after I made my way up the stairs to enter the exhibition galleries I was chased by one of the two aforementioned receptionists and rudely informed that they were actually closed, only the shop was open; only when questioned did she mention that the exhibition opens at 11. What's the point opening a gallery and paying staff if the exhibitions can't be visited? As it turns out I had a train to catch so couldn't hang aroud until 11.

Ikon is an outstanding contemporary conceptual art gallery (see the other reviews). This review relates specifically to the current COVID/lockdown experience, which was a sensory and intellectual overload, in a good way.
Ikon is operating a slick and unfussy pandemic response. You have to book in advance on the web site, which is still free, but you have to choose in advance when you're going to come. It was always a good idea to check their website before travelling to avoid visiting during a refit or stuff you already know you don't like.
On arrival we were immediately welcomed and our tickets checked. Staff were helpful but unintrusive throughout and wore masks at all times. The galleries were quiet (which was lovely) and this is actually a great time to visit. People come in to free galleries to get out of the rain, no fun for them or me, but currently that doesn't happen and it's all rather nice.
The content was extremely varied and challenging. After over a year of artistic starvation I found this a bit overwhelming. I didn't know where to look! It seems I've got used to just one place to look (a screen), whereas a gallery like Ikon is coming at you from every angle. Pretentious conceptual art never tasted so good. After an hour I was mentally exhausted, it was quite amazing.
I was a bit disappointed that Martin Creed's brilliant singing lift is out of bounds to the public at the moment, but don't worry, there's some other auditory craziness in the staircase to make up for it.
If you're missing your fix of contemporary art, go to Ikon. There are a few other galleries which are this interesting, but they're all in global megacities and that's really not where I want to be in a pandemic. Right now, Ikon is about as good as I dare get.

Although I never visited the Ikon Gallery I was absolutely impressed with the look of the building.
My twin brother Stephen and I were heading to The Figure Of Eight Pub and passed Ikon Gallery, I took a few photos and while enjoying a bottle of Devils Backbone Brewing Co "ipa " in the pub I checked on the origins of the building, it turns out that this building housing the gallery was constructed in 1877 by architectural firm Chamberlain & Martin as Oozells Street School , the architecture looks awesome, a beautiful red brick facade ,if you walk to Margaret Street, the School Of Art Building is very similar as it was constructed by the same architectural firm
It was granted Grade II listed building status in 1981 and with the regeneration of Brindleyplace in the 1980's and 1990's was converted to Ikon Gallery in 1998 .
I love the look of the building, Victorian architecture is a particular favourite of mine, very photogenic, makes for some great photographic opportunities, its a buildings easy to locate on Oozells Square, most definitely well worth a visit if you're in the area.

We enjoyed a short visit to the Ikon gallery where there were 2 exhibitions on 2 separate floors. The gallery is well laid out with plenty of space and light and there is a shop and cafe as well. It is well worth a visit.

I visit the gallery by accident , my initial thought was the building was a restaurant cafe but I was pleasantly surprised to find a small but impressive gallery offering small exhibits but all very provocative. On my next visit to Birmingham I will call in to see what is on offer!

Each to there own so the average rating is a personal one. Nice gallery and worth a visit regardless. Personally the lift is my favourite bit both from architectural and engineering viewpoints!

We have visiting the Ikon Gallery and we thought it was okay. A bit small, so there were just two different exhibitions (one on each floor). The exhibitions on show when we went weren’t our favourite, but the gallery is free. The gift shop has loads of interesting books, definitely recommend have a browse!
