Place is clearly run by enthusiast volunteers with very little income to keep the place going. Some rare gems, but not up to scratch for a day out with family. I hope they get the massive injection of cash they need.

Unfortunately this collection is in the process of being dispersed and the museum closed. Difficult collection for any but real gricers to enthuse over

We visited here on its last open day as part of the Heritage Weekend. Frankly, we could have spent our time elsewhere for greater benefit. It didn't detain us long, although we did have a mug of tea.
It was free to enter, which is the right price. The whole place is a collection of old, neglected and decrepit trains and coaches. I admit I'm not that into trains so the distinctions between one tatty old coach and another was not really relevant. The one interesting part was the signalling system from the Victoria Line, which was well explained by its owner. There was very little to explain the relevance of anything else.
I see that the museum is closing, and it's probably as well it is being put out of its misery. I understand some exhibits may find new homes, but much of it can just be scrapped. Not really appropriate for a prospective City of Culture.

I visited the Electric Railway Museum on it's final day of opening in it's current site.
It has an impressive collection of electric locos and units including two former Clacton trains which have been converted into a museum and cafe which served great food.
I'm only sorry I left it so long to visit but I hope they manage to find a new location where they can display their collection.

Just learned of this museum's existence today, on the eve of its closing. Sure wish I'd known of it when I visited Coventry last month. Perhaps if the Council had advertised its presence more - I searched the list of Coventry sights before traveling there, but found no mention of it - it could have remained open. Sure hope its collection remains intact and on display ... wherever the location.

A very sad day for the museum as this was the last ever open day as the council has not renewed the lease. The event though was very well attended with a constant queue of people at the entrance. The museum was free and with so much to see it really was a bargain. Electric trains to look in, an underground signalling centre and shunting demonstrations. A miniature train ride and beer festival. This really is a unique collection of vehicles and it will be a real shame if the collection gets split up.

We visited the museum as part of this years heritage weekend and were amazed that such a wonderful museum of train history was on our doorstep. We were very sorry to hear that it is closing down very soon :(

There are many museums and heritage lines dedicated to steam and diesel trains but this is the only one in the UK for the hugely important but often forgotten electric train.
Rail enthusiasts will love the selection of Electric Multiple Units, all of which are very rare. The museum also features an exhibition of the signalling on the Victoria Line and of the history and technology of electric traction.
The museum contains a miniature railway for rides and a short standard gauge line where you can watch shunting demonstrations. There is also a book coach where you can buy from an amazing selection if railway books, general books, CDs, videos and more.
The Clacton café, within a train, serves teas and coffees, sandwitches, soup and cake.
Rail enthusiasts will enjoy the museum and will want to stay for some time. Families with chikdren will also enjoy it but it will probably not want to stay for more than an hour or so.
Get in quickly - the museum is closing in October 2017 and there are only a few more opportunities to visit. Admission is free.

A great place to see some unique (truly unique - sole survivors!) items of electric railway rolling stock. There are EMUs, locos, and an APT power car. Modernish railway heritage - much of it older than most of the visitors we saw there today.

This museum will be closing after the open days in October. The good news is that all the exhibits will be moving to new homes. We went to the August open day and were made most welcome by the volunteers. Yes it is free entry but I recommend purchasing the guide book which is only £5. This is an excellent product with lots of information. Most of the exhibits have information boards so it easy to understand what you are looking at.
Parking is free and the Clacton Cafe in one of the carriages is very reasonably priced. Including time fro a snack you would need to spend around 2 hours to see and appreciate everything here.
There is a miniature train that gives rides for the children.
There are no full sizes trains offering rides but there was battery powered electric locomotive giving demonstrations with a short freight train.
It will be open two more times (September and October 2017) before the site is used for a development.
Go soon or regret missing a sight of this unique exhibition of electric trains.

Is the museum open tomorrow or Sunday 3rd/4th September 2016., or, as seems to be inferred, only on 'Open Days'?

l have had this issue with many places l have visited. Check website and if unclear send them email or phone especially if particular items you wish to see.
l did a 200 mile trip to Black Country Museum to go on trolley bus and trams and neither where running day l went!
Doesn't answer but hope helps.
