The Midland Air Museum is an excellent place to visit, less than a minute off the A45/A46 on the Southern edge of Coventry. The staff are very friendly and helpful.
Quite rightly the museum has plenty of information and artifacts linked to Sir Frank Whittle and the history of the jet engine. All the early work taking place in Eastern Warwickshire and just over the county border into Leicestershire. In years gone by, there was a lot of aircraft production in the area and this is covered well.
There is an exhibition hall packed with aviation artifacts and a number of complete aircraft. A proper look around this area will take over and hour if you want to view all the items and read the information. If you didn't know there was more to see, this part would make a good museum in its own right.
Once outside there are another 30 or aircraft to view. With one of the museum volunteers, you can climb up inside the Vulcan. Here you get an appreciation of how dark and confined it would have been for the crews when it was in service. You can also go inside the cargo hold of the Argosy transport aircraft.
The museum has a well-stocked gift shop with books, models and a variety of other items. There is also a small cafe where you can get hot or cold drinks, sandwiches, toasties and snacks. This is reasonably priced; the food is good and prepared while you wait and brought to your table.

We had a great couple of hours. Had the place almost to ourselves on a Tuesday morning. The former pilot who showed us over the Vulcan was very friendly and informative.
Let me tell you how to get there if relying on public transport. Johnsons no longer run the 539 bus to Baginton (museum website needs updating). You catch a National Express number 9 at stop WR6 in Warwick Road behind the railway station. It runs every 20 mins on week days. You get off at Afrinston Road (aka the Brenwood Ave shops). You then have a 1.5 km walk - see google maps. It might sound a long walk but you go past a great pub on the way, The Old Mill. After your museum visit you can stop in for lovely lunch at reasonable price, until 4pm at least. An alternative route is taken by the 24 or 25 and will get you closer. They go along Coventry Rd past aforesaid pub but I don't know where they stop or exactly where they start; somewhere in the CBD, but not outside the station . And they run far less often than the 9.

We visited here as an afternoon filler, there's a lot of information available inside (especially about Frank Whittle) & some great things on display.
I can't say enough good things about the volunteers. We had an in depth chat with one inside the cockpit of one plane & the wealth of his knowledge was genuinely amazing, not just about that plane but about aviation museums around the country & what was on display in each of them. We got so engrossed talking to him that they had actually shut up the vulcun & we had to ask if they could reopen it.
It was reopened without any issue or complaints (which we hugely appreciated) & the volunteer went through the roles of each of the seats. We were never rushed even though it was near closing time.
The gift shop was reasonably priced as well.

Hubby wanted to visit, but I was super impressed myself. Crammed full of really interesting items and facts. The plane area outside is really expansive, and there is lots to take in. Hubby got a wee tour inside the Vulcan, and he came back happy as Larry. His guide was informative and friendly. Excellent museum, entry fee is more than reasonable and a great wee tea room and gift shop. The staff are so lovely. Highly recommend.

So you ever wondered what it was like for the pilots as they thundered down the runway. Well, now you can sit in the seat of a jet and a bomber and feel the ambience of the cockpit. The enclosed space of the Vulcan bomber, the crew only having a small radar screen to identify threats from behind. Walk through history and discover the jet engine and it famous creator, Sir Frank Whittle. Discover how the UK was at the front of jet craft design in the 50's, 60's,70' and 80's (possibly some of the 90, we will have to confirm this. Children and adults (myself included)) will immerse themselves in a bygone era. The curators at the museum are living encyclopedias and will be more than willing to talk through the history of these amazing aircraft. Great model shop as well. After all that, you can sit done for a good cuppa tea and a brownie. Well done. Tally ho.

Visited with my plane mad husband and baby as a treat, as we live locally an opportunity to go into a Vulcan seemed too good to pass up.
The museum is interesting and clearly very loved. I found it a bit hard to follow what was what in the initial whittle exhibit with there being so much crammed into a small space.
The planes themselves are interesting but the signage could be improved with a bit more interesting facts for those of us with no plane knowledge.
The Vulcan cockpit visit was the absolute highlight of our trip with the guy up there giving a really informative talk and it was great for my husband to get to go in.
Pleasantly surprised by there being a really decent baby changing table too!
Excellent value for money and clearly run by people with a lot of love.

Had two visits recently with my 8 year old son both on Saturdays. We found all of the volunteers welcoming, we had the opportunity to explore several planes (Vulcan, Argosy and Hind helicopter) and several cockpits inside and out (notably what remains of a harrier jump jet). My son absolutely loved his first visit he was very enthusiastic so we returned for a second visit and again he loved it. There is a lot on display here and the museum is largely themed around manufacturing and airfields in the area but its not limited to this. I did notice some changes made to the exhibits so clearly some of the smaller airplanes inside are sometimes rotated. These visits weren’t my first I’ve been on my own as well. If you’re interested in aviation I’d make a visit. The museum is next to Coventry airport and although this is a small airport it does add some charm with single engined airplanes occasionally taking off.

We spent a very interesting and informative morning at the museum. We would recommend this as an interesting and informative visit.
We had a very warm welcome from all members of staff.
The museum give a full understanding of the work of Sir Frank Whittle the pioneer of jet flight.
There was an opportunity to go into several of the planes. This is brilliant, it gives a wonderful insight into the conditions former airmen flew in.
The volunteer staff are so well read on the background and developments in jet technology and production. They are happy to answer all questions and give their time freely.
The entry cost is worth every penny, a cafe and shop with a good selection of kits that will keep both young and older modeller happy for many hours.

Hi Mark, sorry for late answer. No Idea I must say. When I was there I did not see people with dogs. There is an outside area. Maybe ring them before you go or send them an email.

you say it is free! from what I read it is £19 for a family. I don't know if its free for a disabled person with a helper. do you know?

At no point on my review for the Air Museum did I say it was free so I really dont know what you mean. I stated on my review about the Transport Museum that this was free, which it is, I think you have got your museums mixed up.

We are making a specific trip to the museum in the hope of sitting inside the Vulcan. Is this a possibility?
كُتب بتاريخ 27 سبتمبر 2016
yes it is at certain times. they also have staff who will give u a talk on its history too.
كُتب بتاريخ 25 فبراير 2018
Why was we charged for this museum?, i thought they were free
كُتب بتاريخ 27 أغسطس 2015
Because they need to generate money for the aircraft restoration and general upkeep and staff wages.
