Unlike the nearby cathedral, I have an ancestral association with this particular church. Sadly, as with most other churches, the gravestones are too weathered to read. This did not detract in any way from enjoying my walk inside the church. This church is centuries old, as some of my ancestors would confirm if they were able. As there were still people around, I think I may have just missed a Sunday service on my arrival. Visiting this lovely old church was an enjoyable experience.

I can't help feeling that this church is overshadowed by its larger cousin of the Catholic cathedral. Set back from the road, it is small looking, but obviously old. It has a few wall paintings and some carved poppyhead pews but otherwise is unremarkable. What makes it more interesting it its links with the Catholic Fitzalans who eventually annexed their chapel from the main body of the church and can now only be accessed vis the castle - you can see into it from the church.

This is an intriguing church, a credible amalgamation of High Anglican for the most part, but separated internally, by ironwork, which forms a restrictive access screen. This part is a pure Roman Catholic church, with the Fitzalan family tombs also beside this section. How this was negotiated in those turbulent times would be interesting to find out. The very troubled years of Queens Elizabeth, and Mary is something of a testimony of the power, money, influence, and vision of the various Dukes of Norfolk. It would be interesting to find out how they did this.
The church itself, has in both sections, much of an Italian feeling with many statues of the Virgin Mary / Madonna and child. The excellent condition of the church belittles its age, and this is perhaps better appreciated from looking at the exterior, and surroundings.
St Nicholas is most certainly worth viewing - in fact, a trip to Arundel would be incomplete without viewing this ( almost ) unique church.

I loved this little church which is much more historic than the imposing cathedral near by. It is a curious mix of Anglican and Roman Catholic because of the Dukes of Norfolk - the attached Fitzalan chapel belongs to the castle and the Catholic dukes and the main church is Anglican. A metal gate separates the two. It is peaceful and the reredos behind the alter is lovely. Well worth a visit.

Well maintained church with an interesting history regarding the segregation of the chancel from the nave. Significantly restored in Victorian times.

I thought St. Nicole's Church was more impressive because of its age and history. From its Norman beginnings, it has survived numerous attacks from invading forces, and been repaired and restored following harsh treatment over the years. And it still looks good.

Opposite Arundel Cathedral is the Parish and Priory Church of St Nicholas, which also pops up above the views from the Castle gardens. The church dates from 1380 and has a beautiful 15th century pulpit and (currently closed because of the pandemic) the Fitzalan Chapel which is the private chapel of the Dukes of Norfolk, the premier Roman Catholic family in England.
Thus, unusually, one building houses spaces for Anglican and for Roman Catholic worship.
A relatively simple church in terms of its architecture, inspirational and worth exploring. You are best to research it in advance because leaflets and visitor information has been removed due to pandemic precautions, but well done for being open.

Well worth a visit on the way from the Castle to the cathedral take a right turn into St Nicholas church for some peace, quiet. Some work is being done at present but still plenty to see and you may be lucky to meet one of the stewards who will explain all about the church and its fascinating history.

This Church is attached to the Chapel inside the Arundel Castle walls but is accessed from outside. It’s a truly beautiful place and even though this may sound odd, the cemetery was my favorite part. The headstones are so old and weathered that you can’t even make out the names or dates which made it even more mind boggling to think of how old this place is and how much history it has seen. Make time for a stop!
