On Tuesday, we (the children of Holbrook Primary School) visited Fishbourne Roman Palace for a school trip to learn more about life in Ancient Rome.
When we first arrived, we were amazed by the 2000 year old, magnificent mosaics, which had been carefully dug up and preserved beautifully. We admired the detailed patterns and designs. Interestingly, we saw the remains (a skeleton!) of a real life Roman laid inside a mosaic.
After that, we spent time wandering around the museum, which was packed with real artefacts. How lucky! It was extremely informative and I particularly enjoyed the remarkable Roman busts because we have been learning about them in school. Near the gift shop, we stared in awe at the 3D map of the palace – you could even see mini people and so much detail!
Although we had the BEST day ever, the lunchroom could be improved by: cleaning the seats, adding an air freshener and adding more seating options.
In summary, we all really enjoyed ourselves visiting the palace and returned to school full of excitement and information about Ancient Rome – what more could we have wished for?

A great place for a windy, cold November day and it was mobility scooter friendly! The mosaics are interesting as is the museum with its time line. We went to the cafe for a good coffee beforehand .

Lovely experience to appreciate the full extent of this archaeological site of a Celtic-Romano Palace, not to mention a refresh course in British history! The museum, shop and cafe are great too. The gardens are worth walking around too. Would visit again without doubt.

Not a cheap day out but clearly a lot of work has been done and is ongoing to preserve this amazing historical site. Gardens give a flavour of how it may have been. Luckily it was discovered in time not to have had the rest of the village built over it! A very enjoyable couple of hours.
Note: Don’t plan on using the cafe next door. Everything very expensive (if available!). We arrived just after midday and decided to eat first. 3 people behind the counter. Long queue which didn’t move for at least 10 minutes. In this time we had decided on jacket potatoes to be told there were none. At midday on a Sunday at the start of the school half-term!!! So only overpriced sandwiches available. Looked at a tray left behind by an earlier visitor - half a sandwich and most of the salad garnish still on the plate - not a good omen - so we didn’t bother. One of our party wanted a piece of cake (£4.00😵💫). When he took it outside he realised it wasn’t what had been asked for so a replacement was sought. One bite and the verdict was not good. You have been warned!

A super museum with a wonderful display of mosaics in situ. Very nice gardens. Friendly and informative staff who explained details of some of the mosaics. Nice cafe with helpful, friendly staff. The whole site is well worth a visit.

Wow! I 've wanted to go here for over 40 years, and it didn't disappoint! Mosaics are stunning, and the gardens were delightful. Friendly staff, and interesting museum. I will return!

This site is so interesting! They have amazing mosaics, able to be seen close up. And all of the artifacts! The staff were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The amount of work that goes into the collection and the dedication of the volunteers is commendable.
On a practical note- the tea room was welcoming and sandwich delicious ( Brie & chutney); the used book sale had a good selection; and the discovery center staff willing to explain what they were doing to upkeep the collection and continue to do research. Also the walk from fishbourne station was relatively easy.

As a quilter, and having just laid a tile floor, I could really appreciate the level of skill involved in these mosaic floors.
The docent, Alan, was one of the best tour guides I’ve ever encountered, and really brought the site alive.

Good value attraction that my Latin teacher promised to take us to and never did. 35 years later I finally made it and it didn't disappoint. Lots of small finds on display but the mosaics are the main attraction and they are amazing. It's fantastic that the best one survived intact. The information panels around the mosaics are low down and poorly lit and the toilet absolutely reeked so they could improve the experience. They think the palace was burnt down by marauding pirates. As the palace contained two ovens and a blacksmith's forge, I'd suggest the source of the fire might be a little more straightforward.

Being realistic, bearing in mind 9year olds get bored in 2 minutes. How long is needed for an average visit?

If you enjoy, the place is all about 2 hours, guided visiting with the best explanations ever.

Thank you for your enquiry. Yes, the museum and mosaics are all undercover and are viewed from a walkway above. The plants area and formal gardens are outside and there is a covered colonnade which overlooks the garden.

Me & a few friends will be meeting up at your cafe before cycling to West Wittering & back. Will we be able to leave our cars in your car park while we are cycling ?
I don't expect it to be more than 5 cars.
