One of our favourite places as a couple for walks... We come back when we want to get away from it all... Beautiful and challenging walk from Haworth

Part of a walk we did with a guide. It was a warm day so the views were tremendous but probably lacked the atmosphere Emily Bronte created in Wuthering Heights.

As an avid hiker and Bronte fan, visiting Top Withens was a must. I walked from Haworth and it took a few hours there and back.
The moors are beautiful, and the walk not too tough for most of it. It is windy up here though!

I've done this walk many times, and it never disappoints. Not for those who want an easy walk: the route via Bronte Falls requires a bit of climbing up and down and can be muddy and slippery - but whichever way you go (the Stanbury route is easier) it's stunning.

No visit to Haworth is complete without a walk up to Top Withens (at least for those who are physically able for the walk). The location - if not the ruined building itself - is regarded as a likely inspiration for Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights, and it's certainly possible to see why, although the day we visited was hot and sunny and distinctly non-wuthering.
We walked up from Stanbury - the walk is well signposted but I do have to say is a bit further than the 1.5 miles advertised at the bottom of the hill! After walking for a while we came to another signpost which also said... 1.5 miles. The walk is perfectly manageable for anyone with reasonable fitness, but the distance discrepancy is something to be aware of if you are walking with small children (or grumpy teens). I'd say it's probably a bit over 2 miles from Stanbury.
Beautiful views from the top, and we returned to ground level feeling satisfied if a little bit sunburnt.

A wonderful place to visit if you are interested in the Bronte Sisters, are walking the Pennine Way or just wandering into the hills.
The route up from Haworth and 'Bronte Bridge' is straight forward but the ground is rough in places so be careful.
Oh yes and there isn't a cafe or anything at the building (much to the disappointment of many visitors.

A bracing walk over a lovely moorland, passing the Bronte falls and bridge, a small part of the way we were followed by a little Grouse that made its rather strange territorial squawk, very well signposted round trip

I did this walk starting from Haworth and taking in the Bronte waterfalls. C 11 miles in total, mostly easy walking on well defined signposted tracks, the going getting harder from the Falls to Top Withens stretch. The printed directions that I got were not entirely accurate, esp from the Bronte Falls to Top Withens, but fairly obvious which track to take. The (roofless) building is reputed to be the choice of Emily Bronte as they home of Heathcliff of Wuthering Heights fame and the explanatory plaque provided by the Bronte Society supports this view.
It is certainly located in a hauntingly desolate position on the moor so that certainly fits the bill.
I can recommend this as a good half days walk if you are reasonably fit with splendid moorland views and history to enjoy.

The best place I have been for hiking in Yorkshire.
Picturesque, widespread and peaceful.
Going here helps me understand how it inspired Emily to write Wuthering Heights.
Although I went alone, it was not very hard to find Top Withens. But it is quite far and hilly to get to the place.
I kept telling myself that I needed to finish the hike and reach the designated destination.
When I finally got to the top, it felt so good like I had had achieved something great.
I'd love to come back there soon on a sunny day to fully enjoy the scenery.

How long does it take to walk from the Bronte Parsonage? Or should we drive to a particular spot to start our walk?

I would say about 2hrs maximum, it was quite windy on the day we were out and there was a local race on traveling in the same direction we were walking so we probably could have walked it quicker if there had been less foot traffic.

I am trying to find a place I visited outside of Haworth in 2001. It was NOT in town. It was by an old building that was part of the Bronte history, NOT Top's Within. It was close to where the bus dropped me off out in the country. It was a house at the bottom of the hill. They took in guests, but I don't know if it was a real B & B. It was at the bottom of the hill that lead to Peniston Crag. I talked to the woman in this house on my way up and she asked me to CHECK IN with her on my way down, because I was traveling alone and it was a dreary day. Sure enough I fell (on totally flat land), so I spoke with her on my way home. When she found out I had fallen she took me into her kitchen and it had a HUGE stone fireplace and gave me tea. She eventually got a call and said a guest was coming to stay, so she took be back into town to get the guest, so I did not have to wait for a bus. I always wondered who she was and I didn't think to ask fro her address. Does this sound familiar to someone who has lived there a while?

Hello,
It could have been Ponden Guest House or Ponden Mill. Both are just outside Stanbury, which is north of Top Withens. I don't think that the people who now run Ponden Mill were there in 2001 but it is close to where the 916 bus from Keighley runs.
The likely inspiration for Penistone Crags is Ponden Kirk, which can be found by looking up the reader's guide to Wuthering Heights.
I hope that this helps.
