Fantastic visit. I’d sponsored ‘Tat’ as a present for my brother and we were pleased to be able to visit to meet Tat.
An introductory talk whilst some of the donkeys played with a wellington boot was entertaining, and then a visit to meet the other donkeys outside was really enjoyable.
We were grateful that dogs are welcome, and it meant we could spend a little time without worrying about the dogs being in the car.
Had we known there was a cafe (I didn’t check), we’d have supported by having a drink and cake - but instead we bought some souvenirs and gifts.

This is part of a group of donkey sanctarys round the UK. The location is in a rural setting a few miles north east of Leeds. We booked our visit as noted on the website. Access is along a narrow country lane and on arrival staff were marshalling vehicle parking, prior to checking booking arrangements, although we did notice a small number of visitors that did not appear to have booked. The visit started with a short introductory talk about the residents, which took place in a large building with an exercise area. After that visitors are free to visit the fenced stables area where the donkeys were feeding close to the public, and a very nice gift shop. The whole operation is very professional and the donkeys appear very well looked after. Entry is free but donations are of course welcome.

All the ladies we met on our visit were really friendly, knowledgeable, helpful and great fun. We loved the facilities and they were clean and safe, The donkeys all looked brilliantly well looked after and everyone who worked there was incredibly passionate and devoted. 10/10 visit - highly recommended. We learned about the great work that the sanctuary does with children visitors. We loved talking to the people who work and volunteer at the sanctuary and we really liked scratching the donkeys and giving them a rub, we left a big sack of pony carrots we hope they have been snacking on and we learned that donkeys love ginger biscuits - who knew ??? My wife sponsored Theo and we look forward to seeing him again. Thanks everyone 👍🏻😀

We had a lovely afternoon meeting the donkeys and learning all about them. The staff are really knowledgeable and clearly devoted to the donkeys. The booking system meant that it didn't feel too busy and we were able to stroll about and enjoy spending time with these wonderful animals

Had a lovely visit to the donkey sanctuary at Leeds. The staff that run it do a fantastic job in organising the visit with lots of information about the donkeys and the sanctuary. It was so nice to get up close to the donkeys that were happy to come over and interact with everyone there. The staff were fantastic in answering all our questions that was very interesting and educational. We look forward to returning and visiting as many as the donkey sanctuaries as we can as the staff do such a fantastic job in caring for the donkeys and making them happy.

Amazing! The staff were were all very friendly and answered any questions we had. All the donkeys were happy, friendly and well looked after. They were all very interested in our dog and then just stood there whilst we scratched them. Then we bought six items in the shop! Would definitely, definitely recommend.

We adopted Billy O, so decided to visit and meet him. The sanctuary is in a beautiful position, surrounded by countryside. There was ample parking, and a cafe/gift area. NB Items from the shop were cash only
The donkeys looked well cared for, and came over to the visitors. Nothing was forced, they wandered over for a stroke which they enjoyed.
The staff all were friendly and welcoming, they all seemed to love their job looking after the donkeys. They answered questions from visitors and gave details of each donkey's individual characters.
We stayed around an hour, it was very enjoyable.

I am in a wheelchair , My PA , carer n Friend oo, it was back in February 2020 I had a "donkey" bought as a Christmas Present , and couldn't wait to go n see HARBIN , took ginger biscuits, and a bag of carrots as requested. Our time was limited as my PA n Friend both needed to get back to the farm where their horses are stabled in Barnsley - so up to present due to covd-19 pandemic haven't been able to return , also parking was a nightmare, I have a wav vehicle and was a bit cramped for space n I was so conscious of bumping into people or knocking things over, (which I am very good at) . HARBIN has pride of place in my photo frame 😅🐴🐎

Just returned from a magical weekend at the Leeds Donkey Sanctuary, visiting my adopted boy Billy ‘O’. What a truly wonderful place. It really is an idyllic haven for 22 adorable donkeys.
The staff on duty - Cheryl, Amanda, Sam, Katy, Darren and Sara - are so welcoming and very knowledgeable. The love, kindness and care they give is second to none - the donkeys are treated like precious jewels.
The centre is spotless, from the hygiene in the stable yards to the toilets and lovely café. So lovely to see the stables with their many heated lamps. Billy O loves to stand under his!
The donkeys munched away happily looking for barley seeds in the hay troughs and were totally content - so Zen...They have several fields to roam in, a sand pit and an indoor activity arena to play in. There is a rota for playtime where small groups can interact with one another, playing with cones, ropes, buckets, watching themselves in mirrors (some hilarious reactions) or rolling in the sand. It was all wonderful to see.
The donkeys do not ‘perform to order’, nor are they encouraged to ‘entertain’. The rule is very much ‘donkeys first, donkeys second, donkeys third’. They choose what they want to do (or not!).
The centre also does sterling work helping vulnerable children and adults. The donkeys have so much empathy with humans and one another. Interaction can play a big part in building self-confidence.
The centre also has a lovely little gift shop, a memorial garden and excellent indoor/outdoor play areas for the children. It’s a beautiful place full of love and fun.
May God bless all the staff who do such wonderful work caring for the donkeys.
We hope to visit as often as we may and cannot wait to come again.

Are you able to visit and stroke the Donkeys here? Am thinking of adopting one but want to make sure they are approachable and well looked after.
Rosemary Gunn.
I have a bagful of small hard apples that i picked from my tree as a lot were falling..can you make use of them for the donkeys?

Hi Malcolm,
I've visited the sanctuary a few times and the donkeys do love apples! (and carrots, and gingernut biscuits!) and they welcome donations of these foods for the residents. However, you won't be able to hand feed them to the donkeys - even the staff don't - as it encourages biting. Best to give them a call before you go as they are not always open to the public. Hope this helps.
Is it free to come along dont have a right lot of money this week so looking for some thing free but fun to do with my son

Does it cost anything and do you have to book to go

The sanctuary is free to visit but ring before you go to make sure they are open for visitors. It's a working farm and they do donkey therapy for children with special needs so are not always open to general public.

How to get there by bus

Hi Emma, we are a little off the beaten track - the closest you can get to us by public transport is about 2 miles, then I'm afraid it's on foot the rest of the way. But, that said, it's a beautiful countryside walk, through one of the city's finest parks - Golden Acre Park - and it's well worth it once you get to us! But please do ring ahead on 0113 2619249 to check we'll be fully open for your visit. Thanks, Daniel - Visitor & Events, Donkey Sanctuary Leeds.
