For a town museum this was of very high quality. We specifically visited to see the art exhibtion and the stonehenge realted exhibits.
The art was well presented and quite a varity of styles.
The stonehenge displays were very good, some super models of stonehenge and brillant old drawing and sketches. Icing on the cake was the 2 Turner paintings.
Very friendly knowledgable staff and good gift shop.

The museum is located in Cathedral Close, opposite to the West Front of Salisbury Cathedral. Entry, as a not-for-profit organisation, recently refurbished with Heritage Lottery funding, has an admission charge, but there are numerous concessions; well worth checking the web site beforehand.
Limited car parking is available in Cathedral Close (parking charge approximately £8 per day) or in other public car parks close by.
The museum itself is spread out over various floors and offers an engrossing insight into the natural and historical heritage of the city and surrounding area. There are collections ranging from Stonehenge archaeology to fine art and fashion, with the displays presented in spacious, well-lit halls, which unite to create a historic journey through time. Don’t be afraid to open draws located around the various collections, you will be surprised at what you find. However, beware of the usual ‘metropolitan elite mindset and templates’ about ‘slave & slaveowners’ currently a feature such places as this.
The staff were friendly and informative without overwhelming us with too many facts and figures. All in all, a rather good insight into local history, past and present.
The is a Café is located at the front of the museum, which boasts the garden has the best view of Salisbury Cathedral in town and is open 7 days a week serving dishes using local produce. There is also a small shop at the entrance/exit.
My advice would be to allocate at least 2 hours, if not more, to fully appreciate all that was on offer. This was a quiet pleasant visit with not many people there at all so able to wonder freely and observe in our own time some fascinating exhibits that would be of interest to most.

What a treasure trove. You need to allocate as much time as you can spare for this inspirational gem. Recently refurbished with Heritage Lottery funding, I can honestly say that this is one of the best museum experiences you can have. Everything is beautifully presented in spacious, well lit halls, which merge seamlessly together to create a truly mesmerising journey.

The best museum I’ve been to in a while, and I’ve been to a few. The collections are amazing. Thank you Pitt Rivers. Lovely staff, cafe, spotless toilets and a gorgeous site next to the cathedral. Well worth the trip from Norfolk.

What an absolute Treasure Trove of historical artifacts! Housed within this museum are so many interesting objects depicting the seemingly countless epochs from this area going back to prehistoric times. Plan on spending 2-3 hours here.

I had not visited the Salisbury Museum for over 10 years, and what a transformation had taken place in the meantime. There was a very interesting Rex Whistler exhibition, which led us to find out a lot more about the talented artist. The History of Salisbury gallery gave us so much information about the more recent history of the town itself, and still we had the Ceramics and Natural History galleries to do. But the main reason for visiting the Museum was to see the Archaeology Gallery. That was quite wonderful, with a great range of artefacts from very important sites in Wiltshire. There was also a lot of information about Pitt-Rivers, the archaeologist, who had excavated many of the sites during the late 19th century, along with displays of his work demonstrating how ahead of his time his work was. We spent over 4 hours in the Museum - so if you are planning to visit, do allow lots of time for the galleries, plus a visit to the cafe for refreshments. A wonderful Museum with very friendly and helpful staff!

The Salisbury Museum is an absolute gem. It has a wonderful variety of fascinating exhibits. The people working there are very welcoming and knowledgeable. One member of staff pointed out some very interesting things that I would've missed and added more background info.
Plus the cafe garden is a beautiful place to relax.

The Salisbury museum is located opposite the west side of the cathedral.
It is just under a mile on foot from the railway station.
There is a large amount of fascinating exhibits from Prehistoric times onwards.
Old skeletons, coin hoards, plus plenty of information about nearby Stonehenge.
The Roman times are well covered and I liked the Downton Mosaic and the Amesbury Sarcophagus.
There is also on show a meteorite from the nearby Lake House.
A temporary exhibition by artist Rex Whistler who also produced murals for the wealthy is on display.
Unfortunately I forgot to bring my Art Fund card which would have enabled free admission, so paid the regular fee of £12.

This is a really fascinating museum, particularly if you are interested in the area’s archaeology. There’s a wealth of information and artefacts to view and take in.
We’d only given ourselves 2 hours here and sadly had little time to view the history of Salisbury, which was an equally interesting gallery. We never had time to view the Natural History or ceramics.
Well worth a visit, but we’d recommend spending more time there.

How long should I allow for a visit to the museum? Is it very big?
كُتب بتاريخ 7 يونيو 2017
I agree with some comments below - it depends on your interest.
I enjoy history and archaeology and 2 hours were totally inadequate.
There are some really good exhibits, and if you are interested in reading the exhibits and actually considering the content, then give yourself a half day in order to not rush.
We wanted to go back, but never had the time.
