‪An amazing small church well worth a visit for its ancient heritage. So glad we paid it a visit and got to look around. A donation was appreciated for its upkeep. ‬

‪Ingresso gratuito, chiesa molto carina con un bel dipinto appena all’interno. Essendo su strada per arrivare alla famosa cattedrale, siamo entrati un po’ così per curiosità ma siamo rimasti soddisfatti.‬

‪wonderful church to visit - friendly volunteers who were really interesting and had all the time to explain and discuss the Doom painting.

This is a very historic church and as good as going to the Cathedral without the cost - but please leave money for the upkeep as it is a only run by the Friends and they have made a great job of restoring the Church so far -‬

‪We "doodles" came here in search of our common history and maybe just to take a glimpse at our roots. So many things separate us, like how we use eating utensils, but that is another story. And so many things unite us. This special era 1548 monument (as per the last "iteration") historical Grade 1 Historic Registry designation spoke volumes.

Whew! Let me mop my cowpoke brow and let loose a whistle of deeelight!

We read history, we know who Henry II was, and we know that Thomas of Canterbury fell on the wrong side of his agenda. We also know (or are so informed) that 4 Knights read between the lines and fulfilled the unspoken desires of the King to silence a burr under his saddle (sorry, that is the 'Meerican speaking).

And so he was (permanently) silenced; one of those glorious knights now either resides or is memorialized (or some of his lineage is so memorialized, for all eternity) who now must rest upon the gaze of the murdered Thomas of Canterbury aka Thomas a Becket.

The church is filled with so many Medieval treasures that managed to survive the Reformation cleansing (not unlike other religious purges elsewhere) and some here managed to survive those tumultuous times.

Back to the church ... it is named for both the patron saint of England (Edmund the Martyr) who died at the hands of the Viking-Danish invaders. He was martyred. Not a pretty death. He was 30 years old. Died 870.

The other martyr was Thomas Becket of Canterbury. Assassinated in 1170. Four knights decided to "do the deed" and one was Sir Richard Le Breton or Richard de Brito but it is not him to whom the church floor marker dignifies: it is one of his ancestors who must (apparently) bear the gaze of Thomas of Canterbury.

During the Reformation, the original statue of Thomas was pulled down and destroyed but the new addition occupies the space (and the gaze).

The church is an amalgam of regimental honors, Medieval architecture, and modern day fitting in. The church rafters show the angels from history, the "Doom" scene (circa 1470) over the pulpit shows the 2-way traffic lanes of sinners and saved. And the regimental banners remind us "Doodles" that here, in this country. church and state are not separate (as we try to imagine it is here, state-side). It honors their brave heroes of WW I.

An especially special memory was the carving by an old man (Humphry Beckham) who sculped his memorial. He was a joiner (read that to be furniture maker) and his diorama shows Abraham before he slits his son's throat and other biblical scenes. Quite exceptional.‬

‪The Cathedral is not the only great church in Salisbury. In the center of town sits the community's parish named for the hometown English saint, St. Thomas Becket, the murdered Archbishop of Canterbury. What it lacks in size, it more than makes up in detail. It is an old church and a beautiful one, started when New Sarum began as the parish church for the regular citizens in the early 13th century. It is a gothic, stone church with a central nave and side aisles and a beautiful wood ceiling with carved angles overlooking the congregation.

While it has beautiful stained glass, what you come here to see is the best Dooms painting in England. Dooms paintings portray the judgement day foretold in Revelations at the end of time to remind parishioners of the importance of being accepted in heaven. This painting on the chancel wall was made in 1470 when the church underwent modifications. However, in less than 100 years later it was whitewashed during the Reformation and forgotten until 1819 when parts showed through the paint but was not displayed until 1881. Today about 60 Dooms paintings have been discovered and restored in England but this is regarded by an archeological article I read as the best.

It is beautiful and symbolic. Christ sits at the center on a rainbow with Mary on his right and John the Baptist on his left and the 12 disciples below representing the 12 tribes of Israel. The left side on the painting, Christ's right side is the dead being awakened by trumpets and angels taking them to Heaven. On the left side, distorted souls emerge from their graves to be taken by demons and the devil to Hell. While the symbolism is interesting, it is the beauty of the Dooms painting combined with the stained glass and wood carved ceiling that make this a great visit. Don't just visit the Cathedral, and you will be rewarding with a beautiful church. In fact my daughter said this was her favorite church over all the amazing cathedrals we saw.‬

‪We kind of stumbled onto this little gem and am so thankful we did!! There's so much history in this church and it is gorgeous on the inside. I even went back to go through it again on the morning they were serving tea as a fundraiser. It's worth the visit!!‬
