Perfect walking route from Virginia Water all the way to Windsor Castle down this road. Can see numerous deer on either side, as well as kites and other birds of prey on occasion as well as sheep. It can be a tiring path with not particularly much substantial change in scenery for a long time as well as no places to throw rubbish or sit down, but you can always bring a picnic blanket and take up shop anywhere on the route. Plus there are plenty of places to rest and eat in Windsor itself!

Windsor Great Park has been the playground for kings and princes for over a thousand years. The ancient woodland harbors wild deer, who can be seen taking advantage of the freedom of the park. Visitors can wander through the winding paths, while admiring the diverse foliage. Windsor Great Park is the highlight of any trip to Windsor's Royal residence.

Beautiful to see Windsor Castle nestling in the park. We saw deer and many red kites. We parked at Bishops Gate and went in that entrance (past Prince Andrew's Lodge)

Huge and very green and open area to walk my lovely dogs, quite a long distance, but you don't need to walk all, come under a nice weather!

Windsor Great Park Illuminated is one of my favourite December light displays. The variety and creativity, blending light, sound and technology to create one of the best in the country. Definitely the best way to get into the festive mood.

Positives: the trail itself was beautiful and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience. It was a bit muddy and one had to be careful walking as the ground was uneven in parks, but I don't see how this could be improved without detriment to the lights.
Negatives: This was a big problem. It took us 85 minutes to find the entrance to the park!! .must have driven around the park 3 times. Signage was extremely poor and the 2 gates the sat nav took us to were closed. Yes it says not to use the sat nav but we were in the dark and very lost!! at one point we found some yellow signs which direction us to a roundabout but no indication which exit to take!Had it not been for a cyclist coming out of the park who gave us directions, we would have given up and gone home.

We visited the illumination's on new year's eve,we had pre- booked the parking,the walk,and took out the insurance to cover any calamities.
Parking was swift and simple,short walk to the trail entrance,and there you can enter your own fantasy world,we thought the themes were excellant,a perfect balance,and very clever.
Would we go again,probably,we have been to another similar light show,closer to were we live,and they were both good relative to the size of the areas used.

Much improved over last year albeit the prices in Christmas week are a little on the high side . I made the mistake of booking the wrong date so had to rebook and hope I received a refund . I did but as it was linked to my members car park ticket it would not let me rebook a free car park space . Unable to speak on the phone to organisers as they didn’t answer . Emails did get answered but failed to address the issue .
Overall a great experience but some consideration could be given to a members discount over and above the free parking as it’s not really free as we pay for that in our membership . Also went to RHS Wisley lights . Members do receive a discount

We visited for 'Windsor Illuminated' on Saturday, and although the evening was enjoyable, it was a little disappointing in comparison with other similar light trails we have visited over the last few years - notably Blenheim Palace, tickets for which are priced almost exactly the same as Windsor.
We found that there was precious little Christmas theming; some of the music choices were frankly bizarre ('Night Fever' by the Bee Gees, anyone?) and there were no truly spectacular displays, of which Blenheim has many.
On the plus side, the food stalls were good; parking was straightforward without a long walk to get to the start of the trail; conditions underfoot were excellent; we live fairly locally, so it was convenient; and Savill Gardens has an excellent gift shop. But all in all, we were a touch disappointed with the trail itself.

Windsor Illuminate - Again this was fantastic and my daughter and I really enjoyed our trip. Although the route has been changed, I found that better than last year. Better selection of food and drink available and plenty of space to sit and eat or roast your marshmallows
Only down side for me, it seemed a little more spaced out, with quite a long walk between lights and some spaces not used? I’m not sure if that’s deliberate but it certainly doesn’t put me off booking next year

When I arrived , I got to Virginia Water gate entrance there was a car park but i wasn't driving i walked in, so i'm afraid I can't help you with that, but if you call Virginia Water gate entrance i'm sure they'll be able to help you with your quiery.

Which aspects of the park would be most enjoyed by a family with an 8 year old child please?

It's not a public park with rides in traditional sense. It's more like a nature reserve/botanical garden/historical place cluster so lots of walking in woods involved. But maybe the resident deer around the The Long Walk area interest you. Or you can visit the Virginia Water lake which probably is the most touristy part of the park.
There's also a little playground for infants near Savill Gardens but once again if the visit is mostly for your 8 year old then Legoland in Windsor is a purpose built theme park.

Is it free to walk around the park? I can see that you have to pay for some areas but wondered if there was a cafe and walking available without booking. Any help greatly appreciated. Going today!

Hi,
My husband and I haven't seen our two children since Christmas. We are arranging to meet in Windsor inorder to have a walk and a picnic. My husband will still be shielding. Where do you suggest we park for a walk and picnic please.

Do we have to pay if we only want to enter The Long Walk to photograph Windsor Castle? What are the opening hours? Thanks

Free. Opening hours are daylight hours. If you enter at the Bishopsgate entrance and walk through the deer park to the metal horse for best castle views.
