Fabulous trip with excellent cream tea. Staff very polite and efficient. Covid restrictions very well organised. Only down side was the coach drop off point did not indicate where we were.

Beautiful afternoon tea, freshly made sandwiches, scones and cakes, followed by a relaxing horse drawn canal trip.
Thank you to Neil and all the staff, so helpful and considerate.
Would definitely recommend this place.

Worth it just for a walk across the canal aqueduct. Called off here after a day in Portmeirion just to see the famous aqueduct. There were no boat trips due to covid but you can walk across on foot. Bit hard to keep social distance but everyone very courteous when passing others. Not for those who don't like heights and it's a weird feeling when you cross over the river below. The view of the setting sun was beautiful. A boat trip would be great I'm sure but even on foot it's worth a detour.

We hired our boat from ABC boats at Whitchurch Marina for a week. The aim was to get to Llangollen and back whilst taking in the views, crossing the aquaduct and meeting with family on the way.
Our boat was fantastic and we were well looked after by ABC boats staff. (separate review)
The canal is mainly rural and has some great, peaceful stretches. The aquaduct and tunnels are great and really a highlight. After Trevor basin the canal us very narrow and shallow so be prepared...we were lucky enough to be part if a small convoy which made things easier.
Along the way we encountered some really pleasant helpful people. However, there are some vile and obnoxious sorts too. We were the subject of 20 minutes of shouting, swearing and hassle from one of the so called 'canal people' who took pleasure in making our passage through Bettisfield difficult and unpleasant. There were also some boat 'experts' who seem to have forgotten good manners and patience just because they 'do canal holidays' all the time! Thankfully they were in the minority and most folk were very nice. The whole trip took us the full week at a steady pace and it was a very nice part of the world even when the weather turned!
The canal is an amazing feat of engineering and really is a place to visit.

Lovely walk. Nice ride on a horse drawn canal boat. Book online and pay in advance to avoid disappointment, limited numbers on boats due to covid. Very good social distancing on board the boat.

Canal boat trip from Whixall Marina to Llangollen. Hired the boat from Pea Green Boats, cannot rate them highly enough. Small company with personal friendly service. Boats are beautiful and immaculately presented. Owner went out of his way to help us - first time we have been on canals and he answered all of our dumb questions!
The canal itself is beautiful. Quite busy in August, especially as everyone is holidaying at home due to Covid.
Quite hard work, but I suppose that depends on how much you want to pack in.

Unfortunately didn't have time to walk along the canal other than marvel at the aquaduct. What an impressive structure and certainly not one to cross if you have a fear of heights!

The Llangollen Canal runs through some magnificent scenery. There are a number of narrowboat companies that operate boats either for a day or for a bit longer.
As well as travelling on the canal itself you can also walk along the towpath to enjoy the surroundings.

You get your first glimpse as you approach by road over the old packhorse bridge. It would take a clever architect now to design and construct such a structure ... but it’s even more impressive to think this bridge is hundreds of years old. Kudos Mr Telford.
We didn’t venture onto the viaduct itself because it was too crowded, so we walked down to the river near the weir and took photos from there. Try and catch a picture when a longboat is traversing it.

We walked 10 miles down the canal taking in two amazing aqueducts.
Fantastic scenery and amazing industrial heritage. Take a torch if you are going through the tunnels though!

Just wondering if the aqueduct runs in Early February or does it close for winter? Thanks.

It’s part of the canal, so I see no reason for it to close? I would be very surprised if it ever closes. There are no gates at either end so once again I can’t see how they could close it.
Where can we park to board a canal boat at llangollen

The central carpark is only a 5 minute walk to the canal via the bridge, and seems to be less congested than some of the other parking areas.

Hi, we are due to take our first week's holiday on a canal boat on this canal and wondered if you had any tips on good places to stop at for either walks, lunch or dinner.
Much appreciated

Hi Mandy, I am now in your position- about to take our first trip on a canal boat on the Llangollen - and hoping for any recommendations you might have now that you have done it. Good places to moor, walk, eat... thank you for any advice.

We are going from Ellesmere soon and hope to get to Llangollen and back in 3 days, is this possible do you think?

Don't know if you have already been, but yes you can get there and back in 3 days, we got to to hindford on the first day, started out at 8 second day, got to the aqueduct and over it early pm, pushed upto Llangollen and moored by 5, started back on the 3rd day and took it easy stopped at most of the pubs, back to ellesmere on the Thursday night moored there and into the wharfe on time. You need to plan and take note of local knowledge. ........hope that's useful
