We were lucky enough to go across it in a narrow boat by taking the organised trip from Llangollen Wharf and then chose to walk back to Llangollen along the tow path (takes about 2 hours) rather than the provided coach back into town, which gave us the opportunity to walk back across it.
The canal side famously has no wall or fence and is a sheer drop into the valley below so if you are on a narrow boat make sure you sit or are able to look over the side with the sheer drop. The other side is the walkway across which does have a metal railing but it may not be tall enough to stop those who suffer from vertigo having a serious attack of the heebeegeebies…
One issue with walking across is that Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is a major tourist attraction and does attract crowds and the walkway gets very busy with walkers and as it is a narrow walkway passing people is fun. And then in the summer school holidays on fine weather days you even get inconsiderate parents walking across with buggies ffs…
However I would still totally recommend a walk across even for those with vertigo who will have to cling to the metal railing or their fellow accompanists all the way across, because the views from the middle are truly stunning.

Ace views. Free apart from nearby parking. I walked across, but apparently there are boat tours too.

Well worth a visit if you are in the area. parking was easy and plentiful in the dedicated car park £3 for the whole day. A pleasant walk along the canal to the aqueduct. Once on it, as others have said it wasn't very wide! And the railings are quite wide, although there is a warning about this before you get on it! We also went down the steps and followed the signs to the viewpoint from the ground which obviously provides a different perspective. There are pubs and cafes nearby

The aqueduct is a truly breathtaking piece of engineering. We had a lovely walk along the canal and over the aqueduct. There are lots of different walks to do and you can get down to the river. It was lovely to see all the narrow boats going over the aqueduct. £3 all day parking. There is a nice visitors centre as well. A lovely visit, keeping the costs down on a family holiday.

The canal and the aqueduct are stunning, as is the countryside. Walking across and exploring the area around the canal was lovely. There are a number of snack shops around, which was great. However, the toilets were completely substandard. No toilet roll and very, very dirty. For an international heritage site this is unacceptable, especially given the large number of visitors. It is free to access the aqueduct, but I’d rather pay a small entrance fee if I can be assured that the toilets are usable.

We visited the aqueduct while in the area on holiday. Its an incredible feat of engineering and definitely worth a look. Once you've seen it, there isn't a great amount to do so you'll only need 30 mins. Even the cafe wasn't amazing but never the less it was a nice quick wander with the dog.
To note....its very high and the path very narrow when people are going in both directions.

Trying to find somewhere to park was a nightmare as no clear signage. The website didn’t let you book but when we got there you could scan the QR code to book, but you couldn’t book for that day !!!! 😡🤬🤬 We Waited for an hour for the narrowboat, only to be told dogs not allowed (didn’t mention this on the website or the board where you wait, which only gave prices😡) so a wasted trip. They really need to get their act together, as this could have been a really nice experience- shame it was ruined

I wouldn't drive round to the big car park at Trevor Basin again (unless super busy) but park at the village. Had very nice tea and cake at Sian's on the canal at the village end.

This aqueduct is a sight to behold although it is wondrous there are those who flout safety and make a visit to this site frightening . One young family with pram and two further toddlers crossed ,the children were not supervised and given the gaps between the railings being so wide it was an accident waiting to happen , they also commandeered the whole of the towpath with their pram making it almost impossible to pass other walkers , preferring to push the pram over the edge of the water on two wheels , unbelievable! ,given the deaths and falls from this bridge I feel the canal trust aren’t doing enough to ensure safety and common sense to some members of the public , the shop is manned by canal trust staff as is the narrow boat rides over the aqueduct, signage is graffiti ridden and not at all clear, maybe the next fatality will make them sit up but I doubt it .poor show.

We came here for the day to do one of our favourite circular walks but unfortunately the toilets were all locked up. We ended up asking to use the toilets in the Chapel cafe.

Are you allowed to ride across the viaduct on either a motorbike or a cycle?
johnlefley407
لندن, UK72 مساهمة
I don't know, but whether they are banned or not riding either would be extremely unwise, and would be dangerous to other users because the towpath is far too narrow.

Hi, I'm planning a walk with friends that includes the Aqueduct, however I am really scared of heights. Is there an alternative route (road, footpath, etc) below so that I could meet my friends at the other side if I can't face going across? Thank you!

You can walk through the township and not over the acquduct but it is a long way around

As the viaduct is only wide enough for one boat, how is the one way system operated?
Sushar303

Just as the folks above said. We’ve been back and forth twice, and it’s closest boat enters and others wait. Sometimes you’ll see two or three go together because they’re near one another, but no one seems to care. It’s life in the slow lane.

Yes you can. You just need a head for heights but the views are great.

Do they have 1 or 2 day boat tours available?

They have daily boat tours but to keep a boat overnight you would have to hire it. You can Hire them for the day or two days I expect but I don't think these boats have sleeping quarters if that's what you intend
