As a local I have walked in the grounds of Erddig for many years with my dog. I often meet friends and we walk in the woods and have a drink from the cafe. As i understand it Erddig was given to the national trust with a covenant that the woods are free for anyone to enjoy. However recently getting a drink from the cafe has become an inquisition. I am not talking about a bank holiday weekend when it is very busy but a rainy Tuesday morning. Today an officious member of staff informed us we would have to buy a drink, with only one person being able to go through the court yard to purchase it and then take it back outside and sit by the pond. I cannot understand this logic. I am a local person supporting the cafe and the place was deserted. This felt very heavy handed and quite insulting.

Just been to Erddig for a walk,as we have done many times. Wanted to stop for a coffee,as we have done many times. However, because we are not members we weren't allowed to go through to the courtyard. We were told only one of us could go and buy the drinks then we would have to sit 'outside by the pond'. Very insulting!!Happy to take our money though!!

Had a good little day out at Erddig today in the snow. Only the downstairs in house was open but it was still made very interesting by the wonderful volunteers who give you an insight of each room. Gerald and Elizabeth in particular were great. The gardens are beautiful

We visited with family members, including children, (9 people) and were very impressed with the hall, outbuildings and gardens and will definitely visit again. We went to the cafe at lunchtime, which was very busy. We found it difficult to order food as there were no menus on the tables, the only menu we could see was high up on the wall at the service counter, which we found difficult to read and difficult to order for 9 people from. Also no boxes out for the children's sandwich meals. Can we please suggest putting menus on the tables (these could be laminated for hygiene reasons) or at least having them on the walls by the customer tables. The food however was very good.

Absolutely fantastic place to visit. Not often in these homes they have the servants quarters available to view in clouding the house keepers and butlers rooms. One of the best houses we've been too. A lovely brew and scone as always 😀

Nice house, big gardens but the adventure play area although loved it’s woodland setting didn’t cater to toddlers really just bigger children.

While on the way to north Wales we decided to stop off at Erddig for a look around the house. There is plenty of parking & is only a short walk to the entrance, as we are both national trust members it was free to enter.
There are a range of outbuildings to explore such as the stables, carriage houses, kennels & garages. You enter the house at the back through the tradesmen’s entrance in the milk parlour, where you are meet by a NT volunteer who explains some of the history of the house. You then follow a set route around the house with the kitchen & offices on the ground floor the main rooms on the first then up to the maids rooms on the top floor at conveniently points the guides give you that extra bit of information about that room or what was life was like in the past.
This was one of the biggest NT properties that I’d been to with a lot of rooms open to the public so is well worth visiting if you are in the area or even to make a special trip to.

An estate with a long and interesting history. The building and gardens are beautiful. The restaurant serves great food. Walking around the building reminded me of Downton Abbey. Unfortunately the lighting inside is very low to admire the interiors. The upstairs was unfortunately closed for a shortage of volunteers. So we only got to see the lower floors. Part of the gardens were also locked.

We visited this house on the day after visiting Powys Castle, they are very different. Erddig is a large house with gardens and stables, the house has many rooms to view and are well decorated to show how people lived at that time. Cafe was good offering a choice of scones and cakes. Lots of space outside for those with children and who enjoy walking.

A flying visit with friends and teenage children who live locally. We also took our dog. We are new members so really enjoyed our first “big visit” Great parkland, fabulous history, great gardens, shop and loved the second hand book shop. The only thing was the chap on the kiosk was all on his own so queue large and icecream nearly melted by the time we had paid.

I use my mobile in my car at Erddig and can receive my emails ok

In the grounds, on leads, only. Assistance dogs are allowed everywhere, of course.
Do you have to walk round the house as part of a timed tour or are you free to walk round the house at your own leisure

Yes - Erddig very organized re parking... There is an area set aside for parking large vehicles.

Are dogs allowed in the gardens please?

Hi Penelope,
We don't allow dogs in our Grade I listed garden sorry, but we do allow dogs on leads on the wider 1,200-acre estate. They are allowed through the ticket office and Timber Yard to the tea garden and Midden Yard too. Assistance dogs are welcome throughout the property. Full details are available on our website.

Hi Niger. There should be a travel lodge in wrekham or try premier Inn. Otherwise go to late rooms for an overview. Llangollen is best for a good tourist hotel and is only 15km Hope this helps. Mike
