My partner and I decided to take our young son to Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes. We paid for car parking and set off on our journey to the beach. There were some lovely walks with great views, including a walk along the sand dunes to a beautiful sandy beach. The beach was clean and spacious, but a little secluded. We felt safe because there were lots of people around. The beach would make a great picnic spot in the warmer months. Whilst at the beach we got talking to a local man who told us about the pretty village of Merthyr Mawr (lots of chocolate box cottages), the history of the medieval church and Candleston Castle. He also explained that there are a number of walks and in the summer we are planning to bring a picnic and to walk along the river across the stepping stones to Ogmore Castle. This is a great place for families seeking a cheap day out.

The car park is a joke. We went there to take the dogs for a walk and didn't see any signs to pay for the car parking . If we had seen them we would have paid . I have now received a fine of £60 !!! which is extortionate , they have a camera that photos your car when you go in and when you leave. The car park is not clearly marked and the fee is completely un justified.

Paid for 2 hours car parking, even displayed the receipt in the window. Overstayed by half an hour as I got lost on my way back, (no marked paths through the dunes). Got a letter with a £ 100 !!! fine in the mail today. Unbelievable that Merthyr Mawr estate or Bridgend County council employ companies like Local Parking Security LTD that are clearly designed to rip people off in a place of recreation! The fine money will obviously not end up supporting nature reservation but with a dodgy company. 👎👎👎 The dunes are great of course, but this carelessness of the ppl running the reserve absolutely spoiled it for me!

This is a tremendous place to visit. The dunes are a bit high but the place is beautiful. The beach is very quiet as hard to reach. The local village are is really pretty.

Merthyr Mawr Sand Dunes is a wonderful day out and dare I say it – quite unique in many ways. I live about 20 miles away in Cardiff and I have been visiting Merthyr Mawr for more than 60 years (Yes, sixty years!). It is an enchanting place and has so much more than the wonderful sand-dunes. There is the amazing 45 minute walk through the dunes to the coast and a wonderful sandy beach, or walk to the left of the car park toward the river. Or stop in the village of Merthyr Mawr, a magical village with beautiful brightly coloured ancient thatched cottages hosting a magnificent medieval church. Take the walk to the river from the villager and walk the stepping stones across the river to Ogmore Castle or even visit the ruined fortified manor house called Candlestone Castle and so the list continues. If you have never been, please do visit, you will not regret it. But if you own a dog let the animal enjoy the freedom BUT PLEASE use a poop-scoop and plastic bag AND TAKE YOUR DOG POOP HOME Please do not leave it, as many morons do, hanging on a bush or tree!!

We went here on a family day out with friends. The car park is pay and display, get there early to avoid the queues. The walk is beautiful but difficult in the sand and the dunes are huge! Loads of fun if you take a sled to ride down for the kids. It takes around 45mins to get to the beach, which is absolutely beautiful. Spent the day here and had a brilliant time!

Dunes are fun to walk around. Historical area of interest full of wildlife, flora and fauna. Parts of the film Laurence of Arabia were filmed there. The big dipper is the second largest sand dune in Europe, there's a castle nearby and the beach is long and sandy with shallow sea even though its about a mile from the car park, it's much quieter than Ogmore beach. The road to get there is a single track so please drive carefully. There are plenty of walks within he dunes and viewing points across the estuary.

Exhilarating walk and somewhere to let the dog run free. Also used by horse riders.. If you're into fitness....try running up and down the 'Big Dipper' !

Does the beach have a lifeguard?

No Merthyr Mawr sand dunes backs onto Newton beach which does have lifeguards. keep away from the river estuary especially when the tides going out. Newton beach is more for water activities swimming is better around the headland at Trecco bay or Coney Beach. remember the South Wales coastline is the second highest tidal fall in the world. Swim safe.
Was just wondering if it gets busy in the week days? Looking for more places to go out walking near Cardiff but not a big fan of busy places
