I have to say Very Good because no expense has been spared in decor and display, nor in employing plenty of staff.
But it is not Welsh. It is an art gallery, a natural history museum, a pottery museum, but it is not about Wales.
So there was very little to interest me.

The National Museum of Cardiff exceeded all expectations! The staff were exceptionally polite and professional, and the free entry was a pleasant surprise. We opted to pay £1 per person for the Van Gogh exhibition, and it was absolutely worth it—seeing works by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Monet, and other iconic artists was unforgettable.
The museum itself is spacious and well-organized, with a variety of fascinating exhibits that cater to all ages. It’s an educational and enjoyable experience, perfect for families. Highly recommended for anyone visiting Cardiff!

Apart from the inside doors being heavy and inaccessible without help - if you are Disabled or elderly etc - I cannot rate this place highly enough. There are plenty of staff, volunteers and visitors around if you do need a hand. And there is now a ramp outside if the steps are icy or if you cannot use the steps.
I used to visit as a child and teenager. I recently visited with friends and had to go again on my own to revisit the displays I found of interest. Upstairs, there are amazing art and pottery displays. What particularly caught my attention was a small section dedicated to Black history, just wow. There was also Oriental carved Jade, Van Gogh and Monet paintings and a beautiful Guercino religious piece titled “The Agony in the Garden”. Taking centre stage is a stunning organ, I would have loved some information on that.
They have an interesting gift-shop with beautiful Welsh themed gifts. Opposite this is a lovely cafe with cakes and drinks. There is also a downstairs restaurant which, I feel, isn’t well advertised and could do with a refresh.

Fantastic museum with natural history, sculpture and art! We also enjoyed the temporary selfie exhibition with a Van Gogh on loan.
Lovely staff who advised us what to see and in which order.
Real personal highlight was the art work portraying the life and work of the miners.

I was underwhelmed with our visit. The signage from Cardiff Central Station is almost non-existent - crossing the roads at the side of the castle was a nightmare! When we got to the Museum the lack of information about what was on was noticeable too.
We could not book the Special afternoon tea ten days ahead! The cafe was uninspired. Also why not sell postcards of pictures in the Permanent Collection?
You could do a lot better.

I absolutely loved my visit to the museum.
All the displays and arts are really fantastic and definitely a great learning experience for myself and the kids.
The museum was very clean throughout the building also the toilet facilities are kept well maintained and clean.
The staff were very friendly and helpful.
The gift shop and cafe was a little expensive.
I’m definitely coming back in the near future.

On the first floor you will find he usual items as you would expect from a national history museum, dino's, rocks, plants and how it all began. Little is added to any specific welsh points of interest. The second floor has some more welsh (local) art and some changing expositions.
The building itself is not as old as you would think. Interesting enough to visit for an hour or two depending on who you are with.

Fantastic museum with a friendly, immersive feel to it. We spent the morning there, myself and 21 year old son. It was everything a museum should be , fresh, clean , informative , friendly and interesting. Their new(ish) interactive display of Cymru from the big bang to today was very inspiring, other exhibitions were also very informative.
Despite the development of the digital world , there is still a place in our world for museums such as these.
Well done all involved .

Over a couple hours enjoyed a journey through superlative art. From Old Masters, Impressionism and its Post, Modern and Contemporary, so many world-class works.
Began with The Valleys that is a poignant record of the Welsh Valleys. Pieces such as Pit Pals by William Salton capture the harsh working conditions in the mines but also the resilience of life there.
David Jones is represented with a number of paintings including his famous Mocking of Jesus and Human Being. The Welsh artist Brenda Chamberlain’s Self Portrait from 1938 is striking whilst her Girl with Siamese Cat from 13 years later won her a Gold Medal prize. It shows a neighbour holding Brenda’s pet in her arms with both looking sideways in a distracted pose into the distance.
Francis Bacon’s Study for Self Portrait from 1963 is as to be expected a harsh uncompromising depiction of the human form.
Sculpture wise, David Nash’s Red Throne and Robert William Sievier’s Musidora are outstanding.

I've been to a few national museum's but the Cardiff one is by far the coolest and most visually pleasing one so far! The areas are so immersive and informative, the entire set design is realistic and you can really tell the effort put into them. Highly recommend going!

Dear Julie F
I'm pleased to confirm we are indeed accessible.
There are designated parking bays for Blue Badge holders to the rear of the Visitor Car Park, access via Museum Avenue. Blue Badge holders are entitled to free parking – please take your blue badge to the Museum shop to obtain an exit token. There is a level access path to and from the Visitor Car Park via Park Place and Museum Avenue. There are also designated disabled parking bays in front of the Museum on Gorsedd Gardens Road.
The entrance to the Museum for wheelchair users and families with pushchairs is via a self-operated glass lift to the right of the front steps of the Museum. In the event that this lift is out of order, alternative access is available at the gate to the left of the Museum steps by pressing the intercom for assistance.
There is wheelchair access to all galleries. Most galleries can be visited independently, but lifts to some galleries must be operated by a Museum Assistant for security reasons. There are signs indicating the location and operating instructions of all lifts. Museum staff are nearby to help.
The Museum Shop, Coffee Shop and Oriel Restaurant are accessible to wheelchair users.
Accessible toilets are situated in the Oriel Restaurant with another on Level 4.
I hope this is helpful but if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us on 0300 111 2 333. Information is also available on our website – just click on the ‘Plan Your Visit’ pages on our website.
Many thanks

Hi I'm looking to visit on Friday, how do I get to you from Cardiff central?
كُتب بتاريخ 27 يوليو 2015
Hi JoLou2014,
The Museum is 20 minutes walk from Cardiff Central (Bus and Train Station). If you are on foot, then follow the signposts to National Museum.
There are regular buses to the Museum from Cardiff Central, and the nearest train station to the Museum is 'Cathays', which is just a few minutes walk away. The Museum is located in the 'Civic Centre' area of the City, also knows as Cathays Park.
We look forward to welcoming you here on Friday.

Do the National Museum allow people to take photos inside the building?
كُتب بتاريخ 24 ديسمبر 2014
Thank you for your question - National Museum Cardiff allows non-flash photography for personal use or study in all public areas and galleries, except where there are genuine reasons to forbid it, such as conservation or the protection of copyright
