Finding this place might be tricky. There is some signage in places but it is not consistent
This place is lovely. Parking is quite pricey at £4 but is free to RSPB members. It offers good bird watching opportunities. There is an adventure play area for older children. The walk to the river through the marshes offers chances to see birds, including from bird hides. The walk along the riverbank can give a circular walk of a couple of miles
The cafe overlooks a lake in the marshes and we got good views of a kingfisher, which was lovely. The cafe provided decent soup for lunch
Would readily return

To start with you will be lucky to find this place as the signage from the M4 is not good. It is miles to get there down narrow roads. There is four pounds for parking and two stalls trying to sell you rspb membership between the car park and the cafe. I expected the cafe to be on the river Severn, but it is about 3\4 mile away so only view there is of a small pond and reeds. The coffee and staff were very nice. You have to walk quite a long way to the river and not much to see on the way, heard a wren and saw coots. Better off going down the road to Seawall near Goldcliff and Redwick where there is free parking and a walk on the Severn way on the river bank itself.

Lovely , peaceful place to wander as far as you want with really good paths everywhere and seating available. Good views over the channel with loads of walk options. They have just built a new kids are with climbing frames etc and it is just brilliant with benches and tables for the adults to chill and watch their kids having a ball.
The staff here are just so friendly and helpful and the cafe is a 'must' to visit, good food and very reasonable prices.
Two gripes, if you have a dog, take their 'deposits' bags home, they don't make good ornaments hanging off trees etc !!
It is £4 to park here which helps with the running etc so why do so many cheapskates park outside on road???? You would pay a lot more than £4 for such a lovely few hours out. Shame on you.

We went with our five year old for the new play area. It was abysmal. A few cobbled together wooden structures for much older children. Nothing for toddlers. No swings or slides or roundabouts just wooden structures. Waste of out time and our five year old was disappointed.

Gone downhill since RSPB has taken over.The Parking charge (£4) has driven people away from a facility that was built by Taxpayers Money.Also it has become
anti-dog with them banned from most of the area.I feel the RSPB only want their own members there and not the general public.

Great place to visit. Cafe was nice. However, slightly put off with the £4 car parking fee. Seems visitors parking on the roads outside to bypass this payment.

This is an interesting reserve with a variety of ducks and seabirds. There are good views of the bird feeders from the cafe window. The cafe has a limited menu but what they do is reasonably priced and is of good quality. I would recommend the Welsh rarebit and the tuna baguette. There is a large car park and you need to obtain a token before you leave. If you are a non-member, there is a charge. Fortunately, dogs are excluded from certain parts of the reserve.

Well, what a waste of time.
I needed a couple of days away from the dazzling delights of Wolverhampton and so, armed with 3 batteries for my camera I grabbed a train. As it happened, there was an incident on the line. No trains running. After having made it to Shrewsbury I then ended up being sent back through Wolves, to Birmingham, then down to Bristol and finally to Newport. 4 hours late.
The RSPB and Newport wetlands site at that you can get to the reserve/estuary/wetlands via the 63 bus I think it was.
What they don't say is, you have to book it a day in advance. They also don't say its pointless ringing for info as assistance is never available. Reception is busy. x20
Come 7am the next day.. I'm thinking .. I can circumnavigate this, I grab the two buses that another website recommended in order to get there. Nope! It then requires an hour plus walk with obviously no way to know if there will be a way to get back come 5pm when the place closes, and the prospect of another 5 mile walk on top of the initial 5 mile walk and the 6 hours walking around the attraction.. no. Not happening.
So.. Return train tickets and two nights in a hotel to photograph bearded tits.. wasted.
I guess I could've just taken a selfie on Newport but.. I'd actually had a shave!
So.. unless you drive or book in advance you can't get there. And the info simply doesn't tell you this on their website. Which means, if you travel here ignorant of these things.. you're not going to be able to get there. And you're going to be really angry about it if it's the only reason you came to Newport!

First time visit for a dog walk during some annual leave.
Upon arrival in car park, wasn’t completely clear that you have to pay at the ‘visitor centre’ (a portakabin) for parking but we managed to work this out fairly quickly.
Should have signs pointing towards visitor centre as it took us a few minutes to find it.
Paid up and given a map, we were off on our dog walk, which is ‘restricted’ to a certain route, although I’d use that term loosely as the route we took was over 5k and a great, scenic dog walk with plenty to see and some stunning sights to take in.
Took us around 1.5 hrs to complete the dog walk.
Would return in the future.

Came here with my husband. Lovely place to cycle or walk around. There is a cafe and washroom for a pit stop if you are cycling around to other location from here

They do not allow dogs around the reserve for obvious reasons but theres a estuary walk where dogs are allowed a short walk through.
Can I walk my dog if he's kept on a lead and I take doggy do do bags?

Safe yes but quite a long ride! I would guess about 5 miles. You could get a bus from the bus station which is about a 5 min walk from the train station!
