Lagan Valley Park in Belfast is a very nice place to visit in south Belfast with its winding wood covered pathways, historical buildings, great car parking facilities, sports facilities, beautiful waterways and the historical phenomen of the Giant's Ring. Depending on the route you take and where you park your car you could spend 2-3 hours there easily and if you are a keen cyclist or very keen runner/walker you can take it all the way to Lisburn or into Belfast City Centre, but it will take up your day. If anything you should just visit the Giant's Ring just to say you've seen it.

We visited Belfast in July and stayed in the Crowne Plaza Hotel in the Lagan Valley Area. It a beautiful spot with lots of interesting walks and places of interest.

My friends and I had not been walking along the tow path for many months due to the pandemic but we ventured out at thd Stranmillis end at Molly's Lock.
This area has now been transformed with the construction of a superb new bridge spanning the river and construction of a lock to allow small river craft to access the upper reaches of the Lagan once more.

Really enjoyed the walking along the Lagan Towpath. It was so peaceful along here. I started at the Lisburn Islands Arts Centre finishing at the Belfast City Hall. Lovely day. If you want details on my walk you can check it out on my blog Boz North's Trail.

The Lagan tow path is a perfect cycling surface offering lots of interest. We parked at Lisburn Civic Centre cycling the 6.5 mile to Shaws Bridge, indulging in an ice cream before making the return trip.

Spotted a sleeping heron, a kingfisher, pheasant and some Jays. Perfect cycling for everyone, lovely scenic path for walkers, cyclists, runners and canal/river lovers. The cafe in Lady Dixon park sells enormous scones! What more could you ask for!

Such a wonderful paved trail to walk, run or rent a bike and follow along. The pathway is flat and well travelled by families of all ages and lots of pets. Ducks and bird wildlife is fun to watch and listen to. Lock Keepers Inn is a wonderful destination for relaxing outside and grabbing a beverage! Very pretty!

A good spot to start a walk along the towpath is at the carpark at Drumbeg opposite St. Patricks church. This is a walk along the Lagan Navigation as it was known. In the past barges plied their way from Lough Neagh to Belfast through a variety of locks. Now a tranquil waterway home only to wildlife, it makes for a most pleasant stroll, either towards Lisburn or in the other direction towards Stranmillis.
Watch for herons still as statues poised ready to pounce, or busy moorhens bobbing in and out of reed beds. Find the remains of a lock-keepers cottage, old mooring bollards and remnants of strange ironwork while you walk this path.
Cyclists use this path too so courtesy is needed by both parties as the path is not the widest.
A few seats along the way would be a help, but the whole walk is on the level.
Worth going to after the walk is the church across the road from the carpark, or rather, the graveyard there. In particular one grave, that of James Haddock. His gravestone lies flat on the ground and every time attempts are made to put it back up again, it falls down. This was because of a wrong that was done to his family after his death. Worth looking up on the net.
Be wary of the towpath in this area as his ghost on horseback is said to haunt the area especially around the old Drum Bridge.
After the walk there is, a few yards from the car park, a local hostelry, Robert Stewart’s, originally a spirit grocer’s in times past. Full of memorabilia and snug little corners but I have never found either the food or the menu memorable.

This was a special event organised by Lagan Valley Regional Park and hosted by the Park Ranger Dan and his very friendly crew. It was so much fun for the kids and the adults too. There were plenty of games to get the kids enjoying the forest and also teaching them useful life skills. They learned how to make twine and camauflage themselves to play wolves and rabbits. At the end we did marshmallows over the fire for the ultimate kid/big kid fun!I'd definately go on one the organised events by Lagan Valley again in future great outdoors fun for the family.

Do you know of any places on the Lagan towpath where we might be able to park our motorhome preferably not in centre of Belfast. We are touring Ireland from next week and any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks Jon Hart
