Drove around most of the eastern (sea) side of the Ards Peninsula. I like the way the road pretty much hugs the coastline for a great scenic drive.
Hard to judge its beauty from a cold January day, plenty of little villages.
Impressed by the amount of public toilets and parking spots along the route.
Unfortunately the roads are in bits on a lot of the route, I had enough after hitting a pothole I couldn’t avoid, so shortened the trip and cut across to newtownards and back through Belfast. The roads a lot better as I got close to newtownards.
Lots of camping and holiday home sites along the route.
Can’t see myself being curious about this route again. Pity the roads are so bad, might be something to do with the MLA (local government) not functioning for last few years, so I guess roads are the least of their problems.

On a beautiful sunny day with the sun low in a wintery sky there is nothing nicer than taking a leisurely drive down to the port village of Portaferry. The views on the drive across the lough were beautiful and the colours, even in midwinter, were lovely.
Portaferry used to be a bit isolated but the powerful roll on toll off ferry across the Narrows to the village Strangford has made a round lough drive a good day out.

On a recent trip to Newtownards, I came across a shop called the Peninsula kelp company. Been a man of the sea I decided to enter the shop and what a surprise it was. The array of sea products for sale was astonishing. I spoke to the lady behind the counter who said her name was Andrea . She pointed to items on sale and told me about the health benefits of them. She then introduced me to her husband whose name was Graham. It was good to talk to him as he was a diver like myself. It was Graham who collects the kelp in the water at Gromsport. I could have spent hours talking to this man, he was so educated about the sea. I bought a few items that would of benefit to me, I thanked them for giving me their time and said I would put down my meeting with them and how good their shop was and would rate them good, so if you pass through Newtownards and have time to spare try this shop and if Graham is available ask to speak to him, I know you will enjoy it, thanks again to this nice couple who made my day so much better.

We were enraptured as we drove from delightful Donaghadee to Portaferry along the coastal (Irish Sea) route. It was a beautiful clear day, offering clear views of Scotland and the Isle of Man. The route offers a continuous view of the sea, passing through several small towns including the pretty and vibrant little fishing port of Portavogie. En route we passed potatoes for sale (please put money in the honesty box), Kirkistown Castle, and a rich abundance of wonderful scenery. Our experience ended in Portaferry, from where we caught the efficient ferry to Strangford, and therefore (out of necessity) we missed out on the experience of taking the return journey along the eastern shore of Strangford Lough. Hopefully we will do so at a future date.

This was the third trip to Ireland for my husband and me, but a first for the other 15 family members who were with us--7 adults and 6 youngsters between the ages of 12 and 17. We initially chose the Ards Peninsula because my father's ancestors lived there, but it turned out to be a great destination all on its own merits. The whole family stayed at the beautiful Cairn Bay Lodge in Bangor, which included delicious breakfasts at the on-site cafe, The Starfish. The proprietors, Jenny and Chris, also provided us with picnic lunches that we could enjoy at seaside parks. We had superb dinners in Bangor at Donegan's, Underground Dining, and Esplanade and a special celebration chef's tasting dinner at The Boathouse. We had rented two vans and a car at the airport in Dublin get all of us and our luggage to Northern Ireland. This transportation also worked well for day trips in the area. On one full day we had an excellent personalized tour with local guide Brigid Watson of Ards Peninsula Tours. We would never have found all the places she took us, and we enjoyed having her tell us about the history, geography, and geology of the peninsula. When she learned of my interest in genealogy, she followed up with an email containing several websites where I might find additional information. She also checked some cemetery listings on my behalf. The five stars are well-deserved all around. The area is vibrant without crowds, people are friendly and welcoming, and the scenery is breathtaking.

This is a lovely part of Northern Ireland where the sea is never far away. The coast road which runs down from Newtownards and past Greyabbey is stunning. Portaferry is well worth a visit - the Aquarium is good and the small cluster of shops is friendly and welcoming. We have been to this area on a number of occasions and always find the Ards to be a place to relax and recharge the batteries - away from traffic jams, crowds, noise and what is everyday life these days.

The Ards Peninsula has a charm about it. Short distance from Belfast and Newry. It boasts, some say, 365 islands, remarkable towers, great eats and superb Viking history. We spent 24 hours in mainly south of the Peninsula in Portaferry. Visited many interesting and unique places. It’s a fantastic area to explore and enjoy.

Countryside nice but there are way nicer places to visit in Ireland. Waste of a day really. Villages shabby, roads poor/lots of potholes. Coast nice but not very special. Mount Stewart nice but overpriced for what it is.

Head east out of Belfast on the A2 and down the coast to Portaferry where you pick up the A20 to come north along the side of Strangford Lough and back to Belfast.
You pass by numerous sights like the Ulster Folk & Transport museum, the seaside town of Bangor, Grey Abbey ruins, Mount Stewart house and gardens, the eastern point of Ireland and of course the beautiful scenery.
