Owned by the Gordons and built in the early 16th century this ruined L-shaped castle is most famous for its family connection to the famous 18th century poet Lord Byron. The castle has lain empty since 1791 when the last owner Lord Haddo' son was killed in a riding accident near the castle. Situated on top of a steep bluff above the Ythan whats left is now a shell and there is no access to the interior.

We live locally but had never found the time to visit. I wish we had done so sooner. This lovely walk is great for young kids (even though some parts are a little overgrown and high with weeds and nettles) my 5 year old and twin 3 year olds had a great adventure looking for wildlife, learning about plants and trees, admiring the view, looking at the ruined castle and climbing on trees. You could easily pass a whole day here if you bring a picnic. The path is circular (I believe) but quite long so we didn't cover the whole route with three sets of little legs. The first part of the route up until the castle would be suitable for a rough terrain buggy, however beyond that your party would all need to be on foot.

This is a lovely woodland walk up to the ruins of Gight Castle which is actually in a cattle field. My tip is to ensure your sat nav is programmed for Gight Castle Carpark!

Gorgeous walk on a sunny, frosty February morning. Parked in Methlick (Poleburn) and set off from there. Use a local map, or even better go with someone who knows the pathways and how to reach the castle. A lovely area to explore on foot.

Allow a couple of hours to walk around this pleasant woodland reserve.
Directions on the SWT website are not the clearest. Park in the Braes of Gight car park on the Methlick to Fyvie Road, and take the forestry track by the entrance to the car park, which heads initially downhill, and leads in about a kilometre to Gight Castle ruins.
A swing gate at the side of,the Castle ruins gives access to the Reserve. There is a well made footpath around the woods, which drops down to the river, over a footbridge and along the river bank to another bridge where a siff climb up leads back to the Castle (about 3-4 km).

Absolute stunning mysterious walk! Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and all the lovely scenery on the way. We did think some parts could have been better sign posted but not a major problem as made it more fun and exciting! When you reach a bridge it's misleading where to go next tried a couple routes but turned back then took another and came onto a path again and it actually took us back into a wooded area we checked out at the beginning so was great. Would definitely come back here and recommend to others!

It was a great family walk with the dog even after a rainy morning. Not as muddy as expected, has a good path, the castle was a surprise & the walk to the river was better than expected. would do it again.

Nice walk with lovely scenery. Bit muddy after recent rain and steep in places but should be fine in summer.

We thought we would go for a wee hour long wander late one afternoon. It turned into a two hour long magical mystery tour with not knowing where we were meant to be going, wrong turns, walking through looming cows and losing our way as the light was disappearing. Only wearing sneakers and with no mobile reception and the place being completely deserted we were getting seriously worried, soggy and wondering if we were going to make it out or spend the night there! However this place is beautiful, magical even, at dusk. We saw deer and bats. The craggy sunken hidden landscape is quite magical and a pleasure to explore. Signage could be much better! We crossed a bridge and it was not clear which way to go after that (went wrong way hence being lost) Be sensible, not like us! If you go late in the day take torches.

Lovely walk to the castle ruins, about 30 mins with two young toddlers in tow but good paths and gorgeous scenery, well worth a visit
