‪Walked the Deeside Way from Aberdeen to Ballater. Stopped overnight at Banchory and Aboyne.

The first stretch from Aberdeen to Culter is a wide tarmac path of very good quality with information boards at each of the former stations and plenty of benches. Not much of a view on this stretch but pleasant urban greenway popular with walkers and cyclists.

After Culter the path is a dirt track, narrow in places, but still ok for cyclists. Well marked throughout, but after Culter there’s no nearby facilities until you get to near Banchory.‬

‪Nice bike path that we covered from Ballater (bike rental station, fine) to the middle of the second section (between Aboyne and the next). Nickel for the whole 1st section, but for the 2nd, you have to find yourself on the map because the track is not well indicated at the beginning. And then at one point, it is cluttered with trees and you have to go up into the field on the side to pass this obstacle. But otherwise nice. Be careful, not really enough to eat after Aboyne (except a great pastry glacier that also makes very good waffles 🙂).‬

‪A convenient easy grade, traffic free (mostly) Bicycle route to Banchory (18 miles). The route is tared as far as the city boundary, thereafter the surface is good but unmetalled. It is also poorly signposted as it does not follow the old trainline all the way and has odd breaks where you have to join the public roads for short spells. these are not well signposted and it is very tricky to figure out on one's own.
The big downer on this route is that it can get very busy with pedestrians at certain times near Aberdeen and Banchory. This is particularly bad through the Cults/Culter area where the militant residents have actually formed an action group whose objective is to ban cyclists from using it even though the route is/was improved and maintained by Sustrans. Through these neighbourhoods you may experience confrontation or impedement by some surly residents.
however it is a good place for children or casual cyclists to use with good views over the Dee valley.‬

‪I rode this from Peterculter (I was staying at the PI in Westhill) to Ballater on my 'cross' bike (40mm tyres, 32t low gear), on a rare warm day for Scotland. The first short section of old track bed from Peterculter was quite stony, although you could bypass this quite easily. From quite early on I noticed that the signage was poor (I didn't have a map). The section through Blackhall Forest was a bit of a shock due to the undulating nature and rough surface - I had a feeling I would not be doing this section on the way back. I was lost at Potarch and ended up on the B road (just as well based on the other reviews) . Ballater is a nice village and popular. I pumped up my tyres and returned on the B road as far as Banchory (although I could have gone further by rood).‬

‪We rode the Deeside Way from Aboyne to Ballater, a total of eleven miles each way, on a fabulous sunny day in June. It has to be one of the most beautiful cycle trails that we have done. It is a mixture of hard-packed gravel and tarmac surface. As it follows an old railway line, the gradients are very easy. You won't need a mountain bike. We did it on hybrids and found it very relaxed, easy going.

There are plenty of places for coffee and cake along the way. We stopped for coffee at the Cambus O'May cheese factory, so good we plan on returning there tomorrow! In Ballater there is a wide range of shops and cafes - including an excellent bike shop near the old station building. It's a very pretty town and well worth a stroll around.

Honestly, this is one of the best cycle trails we've ever ridden. Be sure to ring your bell to warn people of your approach and you all find it a very friendly place to be as well. You can even stop to paddle your aching feet in the delightful rive Dee, should you want to! Another one on our growing list of places for a return visit.‬

‪Properly called the Deeside Way, this cycling and walking route of around 40 miles in total runs between Duthie Park in Aberdeen and Ballater, some of it along the track of the old railway.
Within Aberdeen city and suburbs - as far as Peterculter - it is well signposted. Much of the rest of it is poorly signed, and cyclists in particular will find themselves going astray in places. It can also be very difficult to locate the route to begin with, other than at the ends in Ballater and Aberdeen.
However, it passes through lovely scenery and there are many attractions close to it. There are three distinct sections. Aberdeen to Banchory, and also Aboyne to Ballater are mainly on the old railway, mostly pretty flat, and great for families, children, or inexperienced cyclists and walkers. The middle section from Banchory to Aboyne is very different - there is a long, rough, steep section through forest, it's easy to miss the route at the Potarch Bridge and find yourself on the busy A93, from Kincardine o' Neil the route diverges unannounced and has steep, narrow, muddy sections with lots of gates before abanding you with only the busy A93 to get you into Aboyne. On my way back I gave up on this section, and took the south Deeside road, feeling safer and more comfortable, and making better progress on the road.‬

‪This can be a lovely walk, jog or run, especially when you start from the Duthie park. I have ran from the Duthie park all the way to Cults and back. My only criticism about this path are those who cycle thinking they are doing the "Tour de France", which is annoying. Apart from that it is nice to meet and greet different people. ‬

‪Amazing elk along the old Deeside Railway line. Start at the Duthie Park and take a walk along nature. Yes there are some houses that back onto the railway line but there is still an abundance of nature - Squirrels, Deer, even the odd fox can be seen walking the line. Beautiful natural walk on a tarred path so no problem for wheel chairs, very popular with bike riders. Normal manners are that the cyclists will ring there bell when approaching from behind, just step to the side and you should receive a ‘thank you’. It’s curtesy to move aside but they don’t have right of way. Lots of dogs running about but generally they dog owners are also courteous, all dog mess should be picked up and it’s very seldom you actually see dog mess on the walkway! Can be a sheltered walk as lots of tall trees surround the edges of the path. History can still be seen in the form of old station platforms and the odd old electric works - mainly by the bridges/under paths.‬

‪This walk is located on the Old Deeside Railway LIne which stretches from Aberdeen to Ballater. We have now walked the entire line that is accessible to the public and have loved every minute of it.This part starts at Duthie Park, Aberdeen to Peterculter. It snakes alongside Garthdee, Cults, Bieldside, and Milltimber before reaching Peterculter. Distance is around 6 miles. The views are outstanding as you reach the countryside and most of the line has an obvious air of prosperity. At the end, there are several lovely coffee shops and at no stage of the walk are you far from North Deeside Road, where there are frequent buses to whisk you back to your starting point.‬

‪The old Deeside railway line extends right from the world famous Duthie Park some 7 miles right out to Peterculter and then beyond. It can be busy with walkers and cyclists like and has benefitted greatly from several sections having been tarred. You can also exit it from several areas too. Great for the city.‬
