Tucked away in a close, but good signage to get there. Spent a pleasant visit to this house museum, nicely curated and well presented, to appreciate its history. Excellent history boards, depictions and displays, and an excellent video, made the visit interesting and self guiding. Friendly staff member, small gift shop, and a working lift. This is a very well maintained museum, worth a visit to learn about the history of the area. I quite enjoyed my visit and highly recommend this venue to other visitors.

Gives a great history of selkirk and its inhabitants especially the ones who lived in the close, also other snippets of local history and battles

Thank you so much for taking the time to leave us feedback. We very much appreciate all feedback. I am so thrilled you enjoyed your visit at Halliwell's House Museum. We hope you enjoyed our art exhibition on display in the Robson Gallery by artist Alma Dowle.
We look forward to you visiting us again soon, next time your in the area visit our sister museum Sir Walter Scott's Courtroom as well. This great little museum tells the tale of Sir Walter Scott whilst he was dispensing justice as Sheriff of Selkirk in the 1800's and it is just a 2 minute walk from Halliwell's along the cobbled close.

Wish we had known about this. My Maiden name is Halliwell. We drove 1365 miles through GB from London to Nottingham, Edinburgh, and brighton

Wow, that sounds like some trip! I hope you managed to see some of the museum after coming all this way. We would be happy to give you some contacts with the local archives if you would like to research more behind your maiden name. The Borders has a varied and fascinating history and Halliwell's House Museum tells the story of Selkirk and its residents through the ages. Hopefully you can revisit again one day.

An excellent small museum full of fascinating exhibits. The history of the building is interesting in that it was an ironmongers for many years, then an ironmongery museum and now a local history museum. The film about the Common Riding was especially good. My only wish was that it opened a bit earlier. I visited Selkirk Sun-Tue. The museum was closed Sun & Mon so I was practically on their doorstep at 11am on Tuesday waiting for it to open as that was the day I was going home.

Thankyou so much for your 5 star review of our wee museum. We're very proud of it and of the story it tells of Selkirk, its people and its history.
Sorry we couldn't be open earlier, but we're so glad you found it worth your while to wait until we opened. Our sister Museum, Sir Walter Scott's Courtroom is open for the days that Halliwell's is shut, so hopefully you managed to see that too on your visit.

Halliwells House Museum Selkirk
An amazing gem in the town of Selkirk really educated us about the history of the town , the common riding,and how people used to live We went on a hot dry Thursday the thick stone walls were a welcome escape from the heat and Morag in the museum shop told us so much about the museum, it’s history and the town and other museums in the town and in the Scottish Borders
Thanks Morag you really added positively to our vacation

You can also imagine the temperature it would have been in the olden days with those thick walls in winter!

It was a fantastic visit and full of information! Karen was very knowledgeable and pleasant. I would highly recommend a visit to this museum when in Selkirk!

My visit to this excellent museum was the highlight of my stay in Selkirk.
The museum is situated in part of an 18th Century house, one of the oldest buildings in the town. The ground floor has been partially restored to the way it was when a family was last in residence. It gives a fascinating insight into how the occupants would have lived.
Also of interest was the reconstruction of the ironmonger's shop that at one time occupied part of the site. This was full of marvellous details, including many of the original items that would have been on sale. Upstairs the exhibits tell the history of Selkirk itself, with special reference to the Common Riding, which was – and still is – such an important feature of the town.
There is a vast amount of fascinating information in the museum. My only regret is that I didn't allow more time for my visit. I arrived in Selkirk late in the afternoon after spending the day on the Borders Abbey Way, and only had a short time before the museum closed. I would recommend a minimum of an hour to see the museum properly.
(By the way, if you are also walking the Borders Abbey Way, another reason to visit the museum is that they issue certificates to hikers who have completed the walk.)
Admission to the museum is free. Please give them a donation. This is a splendid attraction, beautifully cared for and managed by enthusiastic volunteers, and is definitely worthy of support.

We're very proud of our Museum and the stories it tells of the history of Selkirk and it's people, and our enthusiastic Front of House team are a huge valuable asset to the Museum.
An hour is definitely a good amount of time to spend here, and throughout the season we also have a changing programme of exhibitions, which will hopefully bring you back for a repeat visit when we reopen in Spring 2020 - we shut at the end of October, but in the meantime thank you for your support.

For a free museum halliwells is well worth a visit and very interesting. The woman on the desk is very passionate about halliwells and very helpful for other places of interest in and around the area
