A very scenic setting for a small sized castle. While in ruins, the four outer walls remain relatively intact, allowing one to very easily envisage what it would have looked like. All of its interior is now gone, but still well worth a visit.

We returned to this castle yesterday on our way home from Glasgow. A good few miles out of our way but we remembered it being a glorious place to visit, and it still is, however, it is caged, you cannot enter because of work being carried out! Would have been nice to know beforehand? Saved us forty odd miles!
Still, it is a lovely spot to just sit and watch the dragonflies and fish.
Worth a visit, but be warned, no idea how long the castle is out of bounds!

Such a beautiful find at the end of a precarious drive. Lovely wee nature trail and awesome castle. Can almost smell the gunpowder.

This castle sits amongst stunning scenery, next to its own small loch. It is the perfect place for a picnic, or a walk around the loch (on the nature trail), there rarely being anyone else present. (We’ve been there half a dozen times). One of our favourite secret places! Children and dogs need supervision in some areas around the castle though. There are steep banks down to the loch.

We visited with a baby and toddler and found it to be a brilliant hidden gem. Although it doesn’t look much from the road, it’s definitely worth visiting. We only saw one other person in the time we were there and there was plenty of space for our toddler to let off steam. It had said online that the castle was closed due to Covid, however this wasn’t the case. I wasn’t sure if this was possibly to discourage people going at this time but not sure. There were plenty of signs explaining the castles history too. We set off on the first part of the nature walk but we weren’t sure how long it actually was and weren’t sure that our toddler would make it so turned around. But loved how peaceful the whole area was. We would definitely visit again if we were in the area!

Didn't actually visit In Oct '19, but dates don't go back far enough!! I'm born and bred from Dumfries and I never found Morton castle until I was mid twenties (am knocking on 50's door now!)
I suppose ita a good thing Morton is not so well known because hoards of folk would spoil the tranquillity of the site.
And here's one for film fans (probably know this already) Morton castle was a backdrop in the '78 version of 'the 39 steps' (Robert powell as Hannay)
If you like places that ain't overrun so you can take a break from the mayhem and relax then Morton castle is the place (shhhhh don't tell everyone about it)

Auf unsere Schottland Reise durfte es auch Mal ein anderes, kleineres Castle sein. Morton Castle liegt sehr schon in der Wildnis und ist nicht beschildert und der Weg dahin ist schon ein kleines Abenteuer. Suchen Sie es und Sie werden belohnt:-).

This little castle may not be the most visited fancy castle with artifacts and tour guides, but it is one of the most beautiful, serene, and peaceful locations I've been. So quiet except for the sounds of nature. A loch, rolling hills all around, pasture and fields...lovely spot for a picnic or prayer. Can almost imagine what life was like inside during its prime. It is off the beaten path, but not hard to access.

This is one of our most favourite places to visit in our local area due its picturesque location which is almost guaranteed to be a peaceful and deserted spot throughout the year. We love a good castle ruin and it is even better when you have one all to yourself for a few hours! There is no car park but it is possible to fit a couple of cars at the entrance to the forestry road immediately opposite the footpath to the castle.
If you are fortunate enough to find this hidden spot then allow yourself at least an hour if you just want to check the castle out or give yourself a couple of hours if you want to do the nature walk which loops around the castle and down through the fields. Alternatively, if you fancy a bit of a longer walk, follow the footpath marked Morton Hill Settlement. We love the fact that Morton Castle was used as a filming location for the 1978 version of The Thirty Nine Steps – there is always something quite exciting about visiting a place that you have seen on screen, or indeed watching a film with scenes shot in places you know well; as a film lover I always feel that by visiting such places ‘in the flesh’, it gives you a sort of personal and deeper connection to films and TV shows which are already special to you.
Like all castles, and especially Scottish ones, Morton Castle has many stories to tell. More so than any other castle I have visited, when you stand silently within the ruin it does send a chill through your bones, especially when you read up on some of the dastardly deeds which took place within those walls!

Easy to find if you use google maps. not much parking so be aware if you're going at a busy time. The area is outstanding and the castle ruins are impressive. I had a wonderful couple of hours admiring the scenery and walking around the ruins.
