The Wishart's Arch is all that remains of Dundee’s medieval city walls, after the walls were ordered to be pulled down after the failed Jacobite Rebellion. There’s not much to see as it stands anachronistically juxtaposed with new builds.

Piece of the city’s history, very close to the Indigo Hotel, so you walk past it on your way to the city, so not too hard to miss.

The Wishart Arch was near our hotel and we walked past it as we went to the city centre.
It was part of the original city walls and this part has survived.
There is a plaque which gives some information about protestant reformer George Wishart.

In the recent year, Dundee has climbed the ranks to become known as an "up and coming" city thanks to the waterfront regeneration bringing in tourists and the recent scientific discoveries funding our city. Tourists often believes that Dundee is a newer city and hence often ignore this historical beauty highlighting that this is not the case; Dundee is an ancient city.
Wishart Art is perhaps the oldest structure within the city having been part of the wall which incased the original sized Dundee making it a treasure for all history loving tourists to visit. The plaque adorned on the arch tells the story of the arch's namesake, George Wishart, whom, in 1544, climbed the wall to preach to the plague sufferers. Sadly though, the city fails to highlight this treasure to tourists and often, people ignore it as they venture to more prominant attractions which is problematic as its not in an area ventured by tourists; to the left when exiting the ground floor of the Wellgate or opposite the Olympia.
Although a hidden treasure for tourists, the Arch is definitely a must for all the history travellers out there.

The easiest place to park is the Gallacher retail car park which if free for two hours if you take a ticket from the machines. Park near M & S and walk up East Whale Lane to Cowgate and it will be in front of you.
It is a remnant of the 16th century walls around a gateway. It was likely built in 1590 when Dundee was fortified.
It's survival was due to probable mythical connection with George Wishartthe Protestant reformer (1513 - 1546) who preached here in 1544
Dundee Coucil were ordered to dismantle the city walls in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden but the Cowgate Port survived.
Well worth a visit in Dundee.

La Wishart Arch est un vestige des remparts de Dundee, qui remonte au 16eme siècle.
Située à l'est du centre ville, dans un quartier peu vivant, il vous faudra un . effort pour aller l'admirer.

This was part of the city wall and is reputedly where wishart preached to the people inside the wall and the lepers outside the wall at the same time.

Revisited Dundee today with my daughter, and whilst she was off doing a bit of shopping, I opted to pay a visit to the Wishart Arch.
The Wishart Arch is reasonably easy to find from the centre of town, about a 5 minute walk from Gallagher Retail Park, or equally about 5 minutes walk from the bus station.
The Wishart Arch is the only remains of the city walls of Dundee, and is where reformist George Wishart is said to have preached from in 1544.
There is a commemorative plaque on the structure which reads - "During the Plague of 1544 George Wishart preached from the Parapet of this Port. The People standing within the Gate and the Plague stricken lying without in Booths. 'He sent his hand and healed them' Psalm CVII. Restored 1877".
George Wishart was eventually burnt at the stake in St Andrews by Cardinal Beaton.
Dundee Town Council was ordered to dismantle the city walls after the Battle of Culloden in 1746, but the Cowgate Port survived.
At one time the wall spanned two sets of tenements which were attached to the wall.
This part of Dundee is virtually unrecognisable now as to what it looked like around 40 years ago.
I enjoyed visiting this historical site today, but was a little saddened to see it looking somewhat neglected, hence my average rating.
