Great location, friendly staff. Spotlessly clean. Lovely fresh food choices in the restaurant. Only disappointment was I choose the broccoli soup that looked like it had been watered down.

What a great disappointment. A stunning building with hardly anything going on in it. The Cafe, particularly was awful. Poor choice of food . I chose a chick pea curry which had hardly any spices, certainly no heat in it either in terms of spices and dried out under the heat lamps - basically tasteless, and expensive £13.

I shall pass your feedback onto the team who run the restaurant and cafe. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't enjoy your meal there.
Although we're currently in between major exhibitions at this moment in time, we currently have 'A Fragile Correspondence', the Dundee Tapestry and related activities, the Scottish Design Galleries, 'Icons of Style', 'Design, Dance, Play', 'Shylights', 'Stories from the Building', Sohei Nishino's diorama of Dundee, two free daily tours, a programme of events, talks, and workshops, and more. I'm sorry to hear that you didn't find enough to your liking, but we do have a busy programme of exhibitions, displays, workshops, talks, events, and activities throughout the year.
Entry to the museum is also free (with donations optional, we are a charity).

Very disappointed in the v and a. Big open spaces with nothing in them. One gallery had lots of things to do with Edinburgh yet very little about Dundee. Thank goodness for the Discovery experience next door, well worth a visit and also The Verdant gallery. That made our day.

Hello, and thank you for visiting the museum and for leaving us feedback. I'm sorry to hear that what we had on offer wasn't to your liking this time around. I'm not sure which gallery you are referring to in regards to having lots to do with Edinburgh, but as Scotland's design museum we are proud to champion designers from all around Scotland. We do also host the Dundee Tapestry, a community led project with a large amount of panels depicting the history of this wonderful city. Elsewhere in the museum we currently also have the Scottish Design Gallery, 'A Fragile Correspondence', 'Dance, Design, Play', 'Stories from the Building', the addition of the 'Shylight' installation, Sohei Nishino's diorama of Dundee which is made up of 20,000 photos taken around the city, a full programme of events, talks, and workshops and two free daily tours of the building.
As this programme changes regularly, there may be something more to your liking next time around, please keep an eye on the website to see if there is something that is more to your taste in the future.
I am pleased to hear that you enjoyed your visit to Verdant Works and RSS Discovery; Dundee has such a wonderful range of attractions that span all sorts of subjects so I'm pleased that your visit to Dundee was a good one overall.

A great tour around the museum by Kiera, it was so interesting to hear about the planning and complex building that took place as well as seeing some highlights of the museum

The previous two 'Terrible" reviews sum up our feelings. This was our first visit to the museum, and we did not appreciate until entering that the stated focus was on design, but that was no problem as such. However, it seemed to us that having put amazing design into the building, the attitude has almost been "Job done". Come on, apart from one gallery (which did at least show limited features from Scottish design/designers), there seemed to be little other emphasis on design. Scotland built ocean liners in which (for some passengers anyway) accommodation was designed to be the epitome of luxury; we gave the world tartan; linoleum must have an interesting history of designs; there was/is Wemyss Ware, Highland Stoneware and others; there was an antique cloth item on display bearing the Paisley motif, which has been/is used around the World (though I believe it originated in India and was adopted by weavers in Paisley) but there was not even a mention of Paisley. The Falkirk Wheel was represented by a model, but no real explanation of its innovative and, I think, unique design was given. If the museum intends to look at design issues like this, i.e. beyond the household, then there are many, many instances of Scottish innovation in design. For example from the restaurant you can see the remains of the original railway bridge, built at a time when no such undertaking had previously been made (there were no design/construction manuals to consult!), but lessons from its design failure were learned and passed on and used by future generations globally, including the building of the (existing) replacement bridge, but also in the Forth bridge, which, I believe, made use of novel design features (on the cantilever principle?). It's not as if the museum is short of space in which to fit extra exhibits or displays focussing on design issues, be that domestic or in the wider world. Was the Discovery currently on display right next door not designed for its purpose? We think the museum should rethink and broaden its displays if it wants to concentrate on design issues.

I'm sorry to hear that there wasn't much to your liking this time around, but it sounds as if you've come at a bad time. We've hosted exhibitions on ocean liners and Tartan before, as well as other topics such as video games, prominent designers, and even the use of plastic in design. We also don't try to replicate what is on display at other visitor attractions and museums in the city, hence us not displaying the RRS Discovery which is next door.
I will pass your feedback on to the relevant departments; the exhibitions, displays, workshops, talks, and events that we offer changes on a regular basis so if you were to ever give us a second chance there may be more to your liking next time around.

My friend and I visited the V and A primarily to view the Tapestries. I had been before but not my friend. We chose to take the 11.00 a.m. tour beforehand so glad we did. We had an excellent guide in Gavin who obviously loves his job and is very proud of the V and A.
He told us so much about the construction and the function of the building. It was fascinating. Very patient with questions providing helpful detailed answers.
He pointed out some of his favourite items and why which made us look again seeing the item differently.
I am hard of hearing and rely partially on lip reading. He spoke clearly I had no problem.

I'm glad it's free to get in as there is less to see than we anticipated. Having said that, the Dundee tapestry is really very good and I wish I had had the stamina to study them more. As it was, we only gave them an over-view. I recommend totally watching the film which accompanies them as this explains so much about where the ideas came from and the stitching. The 'Made in Scotland' gallery is also very interesting; I would have expected to see more exhibits, however. And that was it, really. A new exhibition was being opened later that week. It was very noisy, the setting up of it but I suppose they couldn't help it. The cafe/restaurant is excellent, especially if you can get a window seat but further away, you see the hills too.

I'm pleased to hear that you really enjoyed the Dundee Tapestry and the accompanying video. It's also really nice to hear that you enjoyed Tatha bar & restaurant as well.
In terms of things to see, we're currently in between major exhibitions but as of today, we have 'A Fragile Correspondence', the Dundee Tapestry, the Scottish Design Galleries, 'Design, Dance, Play', Stories from the Building, two free daily tours, and a selection of other installations. As of this weekend we will also be able to add 'Shylight' and 'Carbon Marks' to that list, with our next major exhibition 'Garden Futures' opening in May.
It may be worth keeping an eye on the What's On section of our website as what we have to offer does change quite regularly!

Could someone please open up a separate review section for the cafe/restaurant so as to distinguish those from the Museum as a whole?
Most of the 4 and 5 star reviews consist of people commenting on the catering, whereas the 1-3 star reviews tend to be about the Museum element. Its confusing to conflate the two.

It may not be everything you might want as a positive promotion for your home city but as a visitor to Dundee we found it to be an inspirational, engaging and enjoyable attraction.

Why is the content of the museum so poor. It’s an absolute disgrace that all the money and publicity put towards this fabulously iconic building yet the content is just not worth the tome of day

Think the whole project has been badly managed. Original budget £27m, then it went to £46m, AFTER cost cutting £80m. Being subsidised by the Scottish government to the tune of £1m per year for first ten years because of concerns that it isn’t financially sustainable - I think that’s why much of the space has been given to restaurant, cafe and shop, they are trying to claw some money back. Then there’s the fee paying gallery, closed twice this year to change exhibits, I think it’s been closed for around 4 months in total this year, so only around 300 free permanent exhibits to see. Visitor numbers are better than expected but I think that has been mainly to initial hype and many visitors being Scots with a free bus pass. I’ve spoken to many visitors and they speak more about the building than its contents. I really fear for the City of Dundee that its so called World attraction and focus point to the waterfront regeneration only ranks #55 on here.

Reading an article from the Dundee Courier in which it says, “Galleries one and two which will host exhibitions provided by the V&A for the first two years”, does that mean the VandA will stop providing exhibits after this period?

V&A Dundee's temporary galleries are equipped to host exhibitions from around the world, and we have featured two from V&A South Kensington so far. Within our announced programme for later this year and 2020 , we will be hosting two exhibitions from Vitra Design Museum, ‘Hello, Robot’ and ‘Night Fever’ as well as ‘Mary Quant’ from the V&A.
There are so many possibilities for the future use of this space, and our team are working hard to continue to deliver an exciting, diverse and thought-provoking exhibition programme for the years to come.

Can someone from V and A Dundee confirm or deny, the Scottish government are subsidising the museum to the tune of £1,000,000 a year for the next ten years because of concerns about the museums sustainability as reported in a Sunday Post article last year.

Don't know about this but if they are it is probably worth it, the spin off for the local area must be enormous, we and several other people I know travelled a long way to see the museum and stayed overnight around Dundee and visited other places of note in the city.
It was a very worthwhile trip.

We are looking to head to the museum tomorrow (Sunday 16th June). We will be with our 9 week old daughter who will be in her buggy. Having been to venue previously we know the main concourse is spacious and buggy friendly, however we noticed that the free exhibition wasn’t as spacious. We are planning to see the videogame exhibition but not sure whether it’s buggy friendly. We don’t want to carry her around the exhibition and don’t want it to leave her buggy unattended.
Anyone that may have been to this specific exhibition able to confirm if it’s spacious enough and if it would be buggy friendly?
Normally I’d call venue for next question but it appears no phone lines open on weekend.

Right next to it but small and paid for. They have a few disabled spaces in the small car park.
Loads of street parking just over the road - twenty metres - which is paid for or disabled parking with a blue badge. Maximum of two hours if paid for / not sure it would take any one two hours though.

We have wheelchairs that can be reserved and would be delighted to do this for you. Please note, they are not self-propelled or electric wheelchairs, so do require assistance.
If you would like to reserve one, just let us know the day of your visit, and your estimated time of arrival and we will ensure that one is reserved for you. You can do this by calling our Museum Office phone line ahead of your visit, or alternatively on the day of your visit.
We recommend that visitors’ reserve wheelchairs in advance to ensure availability.
