A friend had advised us to try to squeeze in a visit when our priorities for a 1.5days visit to Dundee were the Kimono to Catwalk exhibition at the V&A (wonderful building as well as exhibition) and The Discovery. We were not disappointed by either of these two but were bold over by HMS Unicorn. We arrived at the same time as another couple so took an ad-hoc tour lead by a Volunteer, a young man with incredible nautical, historical and social historical knowledge. He shared all this within our spontaneous reactions to the detail he gave us at each point we stopped, responsing to all our questions fully and most interestingly.
We intend to return to Dundee, take a walking tour, cycle down the riverside and definitely visit here again. The intention is to move HMS Unicorn to a nearby dry dock are once this is completed; be great for the ship and even more of interest for the visitors.

If you’re a visitor to Dundee , I recommend you put this on your “to do “ list , as this 200 year old unique frigate is the oldest ship in Scotland, as well as being one of the oldest intact wooden warships in the world.
She was built for the Royal Navy at the Royal Dockyard in Chatham, and launched on 30/03/1824, and in her well-earned retirement is now a floating museum.
On board the 4 decks you’ll find several information boards, videos to watch, and fascinating displays of naval uniforms, figureheads, canons and weaponry, ship models, ship wheels , amongst many other interesting maritime artefacts.
The friendly & knowledgeable staff are exemplary - obviously passionate about their historic ship, and are on hand to answer any questions you may have. An most enjoyable and interesting experience.

One of the first places we visited on a visit to Dundee and would highly recommend. Situated in the old dock area by the Tay . A very unique ship , and the oldest complete ship in the UK. Staff and volunteers were so friendly and welcoming . You start your visit with a short video , before following a trail around the ship. It is amazing to see a ship so old in such good condition, mainly due to the fact it was never used in action , and shortly after it was built it was put into storage . A roof had been put on it and this had protected it from damage from the rain. You can visit all areas of the ship even down below the water line. Be aware though it has very low ceilings and tight passageways so not suitable for anyone with disabilities. It does however give a wonderful insight to living conditions of those on board , and lots of information of its history of being a training ship and its journey to Dundee. There was lots of hands on things and activities for children too. A huge well done to the charity and its volunteers for the work in conserving the ship as it was built . It maybe does not get as much publicity as some of the other Dundee tourist attraction buy recommend everyone spends a hour or so looking around it

HMS Unicorn is a historic warship and is berthed in Dundee Harbour. The interested visitor is first shown a video that deals with the construction of HMS Unicorn. The HMS Unicorn consists of a total of four walk-in decks. There are numerous, very well-preserved cannons on board this ship. At one time, up to 46 cannons should have been on board. Also accessible are the individual cabins and sleeping quarters of the sailors and the captain. You can also see the kitchen and other rooms with appropriately furnished equipment. There is also an entrance fee. On presentation of my severely disabled card there was also a small discount on the entrance fee. The individual decks (upper deck, cannon deck, lower deck with bedrooms and captain's cabin as well as the lowest deck) are very low, so you have to bend down. The stair steps into the lower decks are also very narrow and narrow. The staff was very nice and friendly as well as helpful. Credit card payment is also possible. A short visit to the warship is worthwhile if you are in Dundee. Every Monday the museum warship is closed. Very worth seeing historical warship!

Really interesting old warship, and if you.like boats, you will love the Unicorn. It's not designed for anyone with physical disabilities since there are steep stairways and low ceilings. The staff are very friendly and informative and there's also a video you can watch before you tour. Located at the waterfront, you can enjoy a walk along the Tay, too.

Interesting ship and plenty to explore on it. Good to see a ship like this with cannons on it. Also great to be able to explore across four decks. Staff were friendly and provided lots of interesting information. Will be good when the ship is dry docked and further restoration can take place.

Absolutely amazing visit well worth the money great displays, staff were very informative it was nice you could interact with some of the displays.

Great experience with great guidance. Oldest ship in Scotland (1824), still in the water. Lots of history, fully stocked with cannons.
First elements of the new construction of the frigates (new stern). Walkable up to the inner keel. Complete ship skeleton (main struts) to be seen.
This is a ship that was placed on reserve after construction. The canopy also dates from 1824.
So it's not a polished-up ship that goes on effects hassle but an original. We were lucky enough to find it still anchored in the water. However, the structure will probably not allow this for much longer and the ship will probably have to drydock.
An unforgettable experience for my wife and me. Many thanks to the very dedicated team on site..

Visited Unicorn and one of the volunteers, Bob, gave me a very interesting tour of the ship, with facts, sayings and a sniff of rum. All parts, decks of the ship were explored, and a 10 min video set the scene for the tour of the ship. A really good way to spend 2 hours, and I thoroughly recommend it, and Bob.

Incredible fun for the family. I stumbled upon the HMS Unicorn on a day out with my brother and my dog! A surprise to me, its dog-friendly. As I walked passed my dog tried to go explore overhearing me tell him he wouldn't be allowed inside, a lovely member of staff came out to tell me he was. The staff were incredibly knowledgeable and kind.
The ship itself is mighty impressive and would be great fun for adventurous kids and adults alike. It was a wonderful experience and day out.
One thing to note, it has tight spaces and corridors and steep ladder type steps if you wanted to explore all levels so if youre claustrophobic or struggle with mobility I would research before going but the main level is highly accessible.

hi, our ship is wheelchair accessible onto the Gun Deck (entrance) but to access the other 3 decks (Upper Deck, Mess Deck and Orlop) you need to make your way up, or down, some ladder steps. Thanks

Is it allowed to take photographs inside for non commercial use but it may be time consuming and therefore run over what seems to be 1 Hr. looking at other reviews.

Hi Hugh, photographs are allowed and you can stay on board for as long as you wish. 1 hour is the suggested time it would take to explore the full ship.

Not sure what the childs price is but a senior or student is £4.If you look on their web site there are offers for families or one adult and children.Enjoy your visit.
