The monument commemorates the men of the 72nd Highlanders who died in the Anglo-Afghan Way of 1878-1880.

You can visit the esplanade on your way to Edinburgh Castle, it is free to visit. There are a few statues and military memorials here to view. Information next to the memorial advises that the obelisk is a Memorial to soldiers of the 72nd Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders who were killed or died of wounds or disease in Afghanistan, 1878-80.

Located at the Esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, this pink granite obelisk with a crown and the number 72 on its front face commemorates the officers/non-commissioned officers of the 72nd Duke of Albany's Own Highlanders who were killed in action during the First and Second Anglo-Afghan War. The base of the obelisk is inscribed with the names of fallen soldiers. A poignant and moving memorial to visit if in the area.

The one other reviewer of this attraction posts that it is rated as 'poor', and that it isn't really significant enough to just give a passing glimpse!
How disrespectful can you get. This is a memorial unlike most others in Edinburgh, it commemorates normal men, not Kings, Princes, Playwrights, politicians, generals or people from the ruling classes. Normal people like you and me, like our parents, uncles, grandparents, cousins, children etc who gave their lives to their country and paid the ultimate sacrifice.
You are from Germany, of all people you should understand the terrible things that have happened in the last one hundred years to your country, what with WW1, WW2, the holocaust and communism, do German people not pay such respect to their fallen patriots? I think they do, I have visited German military cemeteries in Normandy, and many of your country men were there paying their respects, laying flowers etc, but yet you say this monument is poor and commands no more than a glimpse?
I would love for anyone who sees this review, to go and take a look at this monument, in mind when they go that most of the Highland regiment were just working class lads like you, and tell me that it commands more than just a 'glimpse'? At least stop and ponder what happened to them, particularly in the wars and the futility at times of their youthful passing.
I hope Axel, that you see the error of what you have said and come back here and write a reviewed review with the thought of all young men and women whose lives are cut too short by the fury of warfare.

Das 72nd Highlanders Memorial steht in der Old Town von Edinburgh in unmittelbarer Nähe zum Eingang der Edinburgh Castle auf der Esplanade.
Letztlich ist das Memorial nur für intensiv geschichtlich Interessierte und Angehörige von Bedeutung. Es ist eine Steinsäule ohne Schmuck oder Details. Wir haben beim Betreten der Burg einen kurzen Blick darauf geworfen.
