What a shame! A place that is enriched in history & inspiration, this place doesn't do it justice. Exhibition space is wonderful but exhibit bland and concept was not portrayed in an effective way. Would have been nice to see an array of artists work that was high quality & interesting.. there is very little effort in supporting artists here. The whole place lacked any thought and I just found it such a shame because the building and the stories that go with it are so special. Atmosphere felt bland too and unwelcoming. Extremely poor signage also. It almost felt like this once was a place of imagination, history, creativity and curiosity but now feels extremely sterile and the foundations that the 'Collective' has been built upon has been deeply lost. Lack of funding is no excuse. I found it all so sad. It's just a place to buy nice cards.

There's literally nothing to see here.
We were certain this would be a fine collection of galleries, but were disappointed to see that the place was filled with nonsense.

Generally stunning place but that cheap sign across the building and ugly door ruin the look of the whole place

A lovely area to view the sights, on top of the hill, well worth a visit, if your in the area. Recommended.

There are two observatories in Edinburgh, the Royal Observatory on Blackford Hill and the City Observatory up on Carlton Hill, along with monuments to Nelson and Robert Burns and the unfinished National Monument with a predominant Greek architectural style reinforcing Edinburgh's title of 'Athens of the North'.
The history of the 2 observatories is intertwined as the City Observatory was the Royal Observatory before its move to Blackford Hill in 1896.
The origins of the observatory on Carlton Hill go back to the mid-18th century when a joint private and university observatory was created in buildings which are Gothic in style. Playfair's neoclassical temple with its four wings round a central dome came in 1822 as the Royal Observatory.
The Observatory was latterly occupied by the Edinburgh Astronomical Society, but they moved out in 2009 and the buildings had various temporary uses until a £1million refurbishment project by Edinburgh City Council in partnership with the Collective contemporary art gallery, restoring the buildings, creating a visitor centre and new art spaces plus, in a new building, a restaurant with incredible views across Edinburgh.
The Collective specialises in contemporary art and you will either love it or hate it. The current exhibition did little for me, I'm afraid. What would be good if the gallery and Edinburgh Museums could use the exterior spaces for contemporary sculpture - this could be an amazing addition to the location.

The city observatory the largest building on Calton Hill was designed by William Henry Playfair in 1818.
Reopened to the public in 2018 as a contemporary art exhibition center. The original 1831 transit telescope is also on display.

Complexo sobre o Calton Hill com vários prédios, restaurante e coisas pra ver. Muita gente se aglomera aqui no fim da tarde.

カールトンヒルの頂上にある小さな建物です。ファサードに列柱が並びローマ神殿のような雰囲気があります。入場は無料でした。

the collective an area that encompasses the observatory, small structures and monuments that have some historical interest.
Inside one such there was a worldly musical theme happening, a chance to stand still, close ones eyes and just absorb the experience.

We've visited the observatory site on Carlton Hill on both our previous visits to the capitol, When We visited it last year it was still a building site. With nothing much changed since a last visit the year before.
We were quite surprised this year that the building work has finished and how good the buildings looked. But also really surprised at what had been the buildings are now used for..
I feel they have wasted an excellent opportunity by not showing more of the scientific side of what the buildings used to be used for. I know it’s been empty for a long time, but it would have been nice to see something of its scientific past. Rather than just a brief nod in the main building with the meridian telescope and long case chronometer used for dropping the ball on the Nelson monument nearby. Instead it’s been converted it to an arts centre and pricey upmarket restaurant.
When we visited the Main building, I'd hoped to see what the place would have looked like when it was briefly used as the city observatory. Before it was moved to Blackford Hill. Instead all there was a nick nak shop, and in the library behind it an audio "experience" from women working in the sex industry. But no one was bothering to listen to the tapes or look at the pictures or books in the bookshelves. A wasted effort on the Collectives behalf.
There are still reminders on what it used to be. But now mostly taken over by this Wasted opportunity of an "Arts experience".
The same is true if you visit the large City dome behind it. just another looped AV from women working in the sex industry. It felt totally wrong and out of place in such a grand and unique building, oh! and mind your feet as there wasn't any lighting inside. Tripping up is a big possibility coming in from the bright outside to the darkness of the unlit dome!
The restaurant “ the lookout” was totally new. We just wanted to put our heads inside to se what it was like. I tried to explain to the guy running it why we wanted to look All I got back was “It’s a Restaurant” Well you don’t say Einstein! Just somewhere to pose with your mates while having an overpriced bottle of wine. And far from welcoming.
I don’t think I was the only surprised tourist. I think others were expecting more than the whole thing gave. An epic failure. The view from Carlton Hill are still just as nice, if you want to see good art visit the national gallery up the road in Princes Street. Don’t waste your time here. Except maybe to enjoy the view.
