I was really apprehensive about visiting this spa but had been given a voucher
as a treat .The spa itself is well past its best . I was warmly welcomed and the treatments were clearly outlined ,however in the cramped changing room there were no slippers or bottle of water in the locker .That wouldn't have been too much of an issue if there had been any drinking cups beside the chilled water in the fridge .The coffee machine also needed the drip tray emptied so wouldn't work .The 'relaxation room 'was really awful ,just a big open noisy space with dimmed lighting .
There were actually a couple of positives which saved the day from being disasterous .
The therapist Rachel ,was very good .Totally professional and gave an excellent facial .
The lunch was really good with 2 courses of good quality food and excellent friendly service .
I wouldn't return to the spa here unless it was completely refurbished .

Got a spa day for 2 deal through itison and was a bit apprehensive about going after seeing some of the reviews on trip advisor but can honestly say that my mum and I had a lovely day. Yes the hotel is in the middle of being refurbished and is covered in scaffolding outside but as the spa is on the lower levels you can't actually see the scaffolding or hear any work going on so that didn't bother us. Upon arrival the receptionist was very friendly and took us through to the relaxation room to complete a form. Yes there is a gym directly above the relaxation room and yes you can hear music coming from the gym but we weren't really in there long enough for the music to bother us. Once the form was filled in we went back through to reception and were shown through to the changing rooms and given our locker numbers and codes. When we opened the lockers there was a towel, dressing gown, slippers and a bottle of water inside. We got changed but only had about half an hour before our treatments so didn't go in the pool or Jacuzzi at this point we just sat next to the pool to chill out before going for our deluxe manicure. The treatment was lovely and included a hand massage which was amazing. Once the treatment was finished we went for our two course lunch which was delicious. We then came back down to the spa and had a swim and used the Jacuzzi. All round a fantastic relaxing day. We were actually sitting in the Jacuzzi discussing coming back once the refurbishment is finished so we can try out the updated spa.

I visited the beauty rooms at the Carlton hotel with my partner as part of our weekend away to Edinburgh.
Was apprehensive about visiting the spa after reading previous reviews. The whole building which the spa was situated in was currently undergoing extensive renovations, which didn't go unnoticed with scaffolding around the whole building and the sound of builders working whilst we ate our lunch at the spa etc.
The spa itself wasn't the most relaxing environment as it seemed quite dated and tired looking (hence the refurb happening in the next 6 months) as well as only hosting a small sauna, steam room and jacuzzi. Luckily the spa wasn't too busy the day we visited but wouldn't have wanted it anymore busy as it could easily become crowded!
As for the treatments, my partner and I both booked in for a back, neck & shoulder massage and a facial. We had Lynsey & Sarah as our therapists and they were both really friendly. The treatments were relaxing and really well done, definitely the best part of the experience.
We paid £55 each for our spa day which included lunch which wasn't as bad as we thought it would be - consisting of two courses. I had a burger with chips and my partner had a chicken Caesar salad and we both had brownies for desert.
As far as spa days go you definitely get what you pay for at this spa.

Took my mum for her first ever spa day as a wee birthday treat. On arrival the receptionist was very friendly and helpful, directing us where to go. We went for lunch first and the staff were extremely helpful. Both mum and I have Coeliac Disease and therefore have to follow a gluten free diet for medical reasons. The waitress took us through each item on the menu and explained what we could and could not have and what alternatives they could offer. The food was lovely and the staff were all friendly and polite.
We then went down to the spa and were again met with lovely, friendly, helpful staff who showed us around, got us robes etc, explained how the lockers work.
We spent time at the jacuzzi, sauna and pool before going for a massage and facial.
The girl doing my treatments was both friendly and professional and my mum got on very well with the girl doing her treatments. Treatments were on time and for the expected length of time.
The whole day was lovely and relaxing, the staff were great and my mum thoroughly enjoyed her day.
The only negatives are trivial - people were leaving wet towels on the loungers by the jacuzzi as there was nowhere obvious to put them (no towel bin). All of the tables in the tea/coffee area needed cleared. The changing room is quite small so felt crowded with just a handful of people in it.
But none of these minor things stopped us enjoying our day and we would both definitely come back.
We then went down to the spa and were again met with lovely, friendly, helpful staff who showed us around, got us robes etc, explained how the lockers work.

Spent a lovely day here on Saturday with 5 friends, we were not sure what to expect after reading previous reviews.Well, we thoroughly enjoyed our day out. The staff were very welcoming and helpful, we made use of the Gym and Spa and all enjoyed our two treatments.The lunch as previous stated was only a few choices but what we had was both delicious and filling. I have been to nicer spa areas, but was fine for what we had paid. You get what you pay for and we felt that £55 was great value, would we return. Yes.

Not quite sure what to make of the spa experience. It felt somehow an uncomfortable event rather than relaxing time. It was obvious the entire leisure complex is in dire need of an upgrade, but equally attention should be paid to providing an atmosphere through the layout of the rooms/area. The whole setup seemed badly arranged - for example the relaxation area is in a corridor used as a thoroughfare to the gym from the changing rooms. I don't enjoy leaving negative reviews, but I was very disappointed that the basics seemed to be lacking in such a well known hotel.

I booked this as an after Christmas treat for myself and 3 family members.
Upon arrival we were check in and told where the changing rooms were and robes etc....
Changing rooms were not pleasant very old looking - hairdryer did not work nor straighteners - doors off hinges etc...although clean.
We booked in for massages and I had to come out to find out where we needed to go we were not told at any point - also the same with lunch - never told what /where to go for this!
The Jaccuzzi is on a timer and doesn't come on for 15mins after 15min session - the water jets were hanging off the tiles and did not work either - so really just a sauna and swimming pool.....
Massages were ok - all very different after talking to each other some did stuff others definitely didn't - basics really.
Lunch was nice however the restaurant stank of cigarette smoke, the senior waiter was watching the waitress at all times and obviously had it in for her - however she was actually very good and pleasant he made it all a bit uncomfortable.
Over all - Spa needs a complete make over.

I recently visited the spa for a signature spa day. The day was a complete waste of money. The spa is run down and dingy and not at all a relaxing environment to be in. I was supposed to have two 30 minute treatments however one treatment barely lasted 20 minutes. The lunch was less than mediocre and I received poor service from waiting staff.
There are promises of refurbishment dating back to the beginning of the year on some of the trip advisor reviews. A moot point for those who have already wasted money on a 'spa experience' which can barely be called an experience.
I wrote to the spa shortly afterwards highlighting my disappointment and this has completely ignored. It is simply appalling that they do not have the decency nor professionalism to acknowledge a customer complaint. Extremely disappointing for a supposed 4 star hotel. I certainly will never go back and would encourage others not to bother either.

So, I will start from the beginning, obvious to some, but with so many issues to cover it's hard to start somewhere...
I bought this from Groupon, as a birthday present for my mother, two treatments each, was quite disappointed lunch was not available but after the other reviews about the services being spot on, I am now quite grateful we skipped that.
Upon arrival, we were greeted by a warm and friendly Gillian who was more than happy to show us the facilities and to the "relaxation" (quoted for the apt name, as it wasn't very relaxing) room, but I had to remind her to get my own robe, towel and slippers, but that wasn't an issue.
My massage and facial was with an extremely professional and expert Jennifer, whilst my mother's facial was with Alex, then her pedicure with extremely unprofessional Sammie. We left the Spa at approx. 2pm, and at the time of this review, the nail varnish has already started to chip off, so not overly impressed with the quality on behalf of my mother. Overall, that is where the 'poor' rating comes from.
Then, the problems began, and it is important that future clientele read on, because it is very important.
My mother and I paid an extra £10 each to enjoy the tired, minimalistic and run down spa facilities. There was no loungers available, as they were all pre-reserved by other users with simply a towel thrown over and a bottle of water spontaneously placed upon that. After a quick swim and an hour of waiting (with the treatments being maximum one hour long, inclusive of two half hour) this should have been enough time for those users to return and use the loungers so importantly reserved. We decided to take advantage of the complimentary teas and coffees, in the relaxation area as the ceramic mugs are not allowed on the poolside for safety reasons; this is a rule within the facility, although, no one cares much to uphold for the safety or hygienic reasons.
We finished that, came back and saw that several users had the mugs in the pool area. One user in particular was drinking her tea with her feet in the pool! Normally, this would not agitate me, but the floor is extremely slippery, and if that mug had smashed, the whole area would have been closed, ruining the day for us both, and other users. I alerted Gillian on reception who promptly came in and removed the finished mugs, but completely ignored the woman drinking at the pool, so already we can see the alertness of the staff dropping.
The pool is small, but reasonable. The Jacuzzi is tiny and contains some sort of chemical that reacted with both our eyes forcing us not to be able to use that for long, which was a shame, as the pool was freezing; despite being told it was 30C.
This is now 2 and a bit hours after we had returned from our treatments, and the loungers that had the towel and bottle of water on them had remained untouched, so we removed the towels and placed them on the lounger next to it, another reserved one for a disappeared user. Numerous other loungers have been left by their users to leave for lunch, but their towels draped over to prevent other people using them. My mother has already approached Gillian at reception to enquire as to whether you had to additionally book or reserve the right to use a lounger. The answer to which she was advised it was a first come first served basis and they remind all users to not towel-reserve loungers, which we weren't adviser, so it's hardly something that is normally advised by our experience.
After we had begun to lounge, no more than 5 minutes passed, and this group of five middle-aged women came in and began muttering under their breath; one of whom asked me if the towels placed on the other lounger were the ones on originally on the loungers we were using. I said they were, and she snatched them, and one of her friends shouted over "Cheeky ‘profanity’!” I immediately went to reception, as they had started to become volatile and showed threatening behaviour towards my mother and I.
Whilst I was away, they continued to intimidate my mother, telling her that the loungers, all two out of the more than 10 available, were there loungers and as soon as my mother moved, they were going to pounce! Gillian from reception came in at the very end, looked quite alarmed and said she was going to get her manager quickly to prevent the situation escalating.
I sat back down, the 5 ladies still intimidating us, one of them in particular shouted "He's just a ‘profanity’", referring directly to me, and continued to stare intimidating my mother and I.
The duty manager turned up 20-25 minutes later, after they had left, and asked us about the situation. He was useless, as he then disappeared for about another hour, and said there was nothing he could do as staff had not witnessed the situation, despite Gillian seeing and hearing the majority of the obscenities shouted across the spa facilities, but those guests should be leaving 10 minutes later. My mother was scared to move, scared for her safety to go back to the changing rooms, so Jacob, the deputy manager, assured her that Gillian from reception would come and let us know when they had left. We waited another 45 minutes before we chanced going, and just wanted out of the place.
To finish, this is a shoddy place to visit. Some people have left reviews saying how great their experience has been, and I am slightly envious of those, because our experience summed up in three words would be terrifying, stressful and grimy. The lack of security will mean we will never go back. The lack of empathy or understanding from the staff means we could never trust this place again. Nevertheless, the main reason for this review is to make sure no other member of the public has to go through this horror, or similar situation, ever! The manager responses to previous ratings and reviews have emphasised that the entire hotel, including the spa facilities are undergoing a multi-million pound refurbishment. A quicker and cheaper thing to do would be to demolish the place, and let someone in who knows how to keep their members happy, satisfied and safe!!
Avoid this place like the plague, I will be sending an email of complaint as well, but this is to warn future bookers! I had already submitted a review with the asterisk in place of some letters with the original names we were called, however TripAdvisor operates guidelines, which I completely understand. The original names, however disgusting, are not important.

I have to admit to being a little apprehensive after reading the latest reviews . I was treated to this spa day as a birthday gift. However we were a group of four and felt very pampered and relaxed after our day. Yes the facilities would be nice after a makeover but the ambience and level of attention and welcome were very good . The treatments were good and the staff were super. My only request at this time would be that while we thoroughly enjoyed the yummy hot chocolate I am afraid that the coffee quality needs some attention. Thank you for a lovely relaxed day, we will come back .
