Our suite had a wonderful view of this cemetery adjacent to the hotel and prompted me to visit it before it closed. From old to very old cellars and funeral buildings, some really huge, populated by notables and public people, all illustrious strangers. Cemetery maintained to a minimum...

On the south-western slopes of Calton Hill, next to the large building of St Andrew's House (the palace of the Scottish Government) is this former 18th century cemetery. It is not very large and has been divided in two since the opening of Waterloo place (the sector to the north is really tiny) and both are accessed by passing a gate and climbing a staircase. In this monumental cemetery were buried several illustrious people but, since they were mostly unknown to me (yes, I must confess my vast ignorance), I did not start looking for the individual tombs but I made a random tour; in any case it will not escape attention the great cylindrical mausoleum of David Hume or the obelisk dedicated to the Political Martyrs (see my specific review on the subject) or the monument that pays tribute to the Scottish soldiers who died in the American Civil War (also for the latter there is another specific review). Apart from the monumentality of several tombs and chapels, it is a very impressive cemetery (maybe the gloomy day, the very early hours and the absence of other people will also have contributed) and as in other cemeteries in Edinburgh, here too there are disturbing stories and legends, such as that concerning the burial of David Allen. From the southeast corner of this cemetery you can see quite clearly the turreted Governor's House, the only remaining part of Calton Prison (now the seat of the Scottish Fiscal Commission).

Fascinating old kirkyard, lots of interesting graves & exquisite stone masonry.
Marred by the fact that the kirkyard is heavily used as a place for injecting drugs ! We found dozens of used needles & heroin paraphernalia in the lairs ! Watch where you step or what you touch, if you have young children with you don’t let them wander off & explore, especially the roomed lair grave plots, empty alcohol cans, bottles / some smashed glass, rubbish, evidence of sleeping overnight in the lairs, clearly this is not one nights use but used over a long period of time with the sheer amount lying about, very disturbing!
Very disappointed in Edinburgh city council & local authorities to allow this old historic & tourist kirkyard to be used in this manner & not try to deter or even inspect & remove before it’s opened each day to have all this dangerous equipment removed, the overall impression of the kirkyard is that it is not very well maintained, what would of been a very interesting visit marred by what we saw & not a very good advertisement for Scotlands tourist industry.

A small cemetery in the city centre it has a statue of Abraham Lincoln and some large needle graves I think it would take about 20 - 30 minutes to walk around the whole site. There are stairs to gain access to here but I don't think it would be a good place to go at night on you're own due to threat of people who come in here at night. Best to go as part of a group or with a friend.

Opened at the beginning of the 18th century, this cemetery is especially known for housing the tomb of David Hume, the most renowned Scottish philosopher (whose sculpture, by the way, you will find on the Royal Mile, near Lawnmarket).
One of the elements of the Old Calton Cemetery that attracts the most attention (and that is visible from various points of the city) is the Monument to the Political Martyrs (The Political Martyrs Monument); a large obelisk erected in tribute to five 18th century reformers who died for political reasons. Thus, in the mid-19th century this monument was erected in his memory; Almost 30 meters high, it symbolically represents a lighthouse that guides the souls of these martyrs back home.
Next to David Hume's mausoleum you will find a large monument presided over by a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln at whose feet a former slave holds a book. It is dedicated to the soldiers who died during the United States Civil War, in which a small contingent of Scots participated who joined the Northern Unionists. One of them, William L. Duff, died from war wounds on his return to Edinburgh, and is buried under the monument.
Another very visited tomb in this cemetery, due to the macabre story behind it, is that of the painter David Allan. They say that this was one of those cases of people being buried alive, and that on the back of the tombstone you can see the face of death.
It is open to the public 24 hours a day, so you can take the opportunity to visit it if you go up Calton Hill. We visited it with a Ghost Tour at night, very cool.

This burial ground was right behind our apartment where we was staying on our visit to Edinburgh!
With seeing the burial ground from the apartment we thought that we would have a wonder over and have a look around.
There was a lot of old graves, some stunning tombs and lots of history!
Sadly it looked like there had been fireworks set off in the burial ground as there was burnt grass and firework debris left on the ground! There was also some glass bottles left around the graves! I think that the burial ground should be respected and cared for more!

Very old cemetery, with a very special atmosphere.
Unfortunately, some people use this place to drink and have some fun, but they leave their trash in between the graves which is so disrespectful

Inadvertently we ended up visiting three of the old churchyards in Edinburgh on the same day: Greyfriars Kirkyard, New Calton Burial Ground and finally Old Calton Burial Ground. Just as the other two it has a nice quite atmosphere, but New Calton Burial Ground offers a better view.

What are the opening hours ? I suppose, that the gate is closing in the evening and opening in the morning? If so, what time can I go there in the morning ?

Open by 8. Closes at dusk. Entry not obvious, but look for a flight of stairs right next to sidewalk.
