‪It’s a scam for tourists, it was cancelled :/ The reason was supposedly bad weather, which wasn't bad at all. Thousands of people came from all over the world just to have nothing to do on New Year's Eve because the organizers didn't provide anything.‬

‪Ah, Edinburgh at Hogmanay – what a treat! Or at least that’s what I thought when I traveled all the way from Switzerland, armed with my finest waterproof jacket, ready to embrace the Scottish New Year in all its (alleged) glory. Little did I know that the Scots apparently have the meteorological resilience of a damp tissue.

Picture this: It’s December 31st. A light drizzle falls. The occasional breeze rustles through the streets. In Switzerland, we’d call this Tuesday. But in Edinburgh? It’s apparently a full-blown apocalypse! So much so that the entire Hogmanay celebration – street party, concert, fireworks – was cancelled. Why? Because of “weather conditions.” Seriously? Let me clarify: this was not a hurricane, a monsoon, or even a proper storm. In Switzerland, on the Jungfraujoch, we’ve been known to host concerts in snow so thick you can’t see your own boots, let alone a stage. But in Edinburgh? A few gusts of wind, and it’s time to batten down the hatches and call mum.

The irony? At the very same time, the Christmas market—complete with a massive Ferris wheel and a 60-meter-high chain carousel—was operating just fine. While the brave souls who run the rides didn’t seem fazed by the weather, the Hogmanay organizers apparently took one look at the sky and decided it was an apocalyptic event.

Now, Edinburgh, you can see the whole city in a day. Which, by the way, is exactly what you’ll end up doing if you’ve come for the canceled festivities. After 8 hours of exploring the Royal Mile and snapping pictures of the castle, you’ll find yourself sitting in your overpriced hotel room, wondering why you didn’t just stay home and watch the New Year’s fireworks from elsewhere on TV.

But wait, there’s more! I was promised a full refund for my Hogmanay tickets. Lovely gesture, right? Except… I haven’t seen a single penny. Maybe the Scots are waiting for fairer weather to process refunds? It seems that while Scotland can’t handle a bit of weather, they’re quite comfortable holding on to other people’s money. Auld Lang Syne, indeed.

Here’s a thought, Edinburgh: If you’re going to invite the world to your doorstep, at least pretend you’re happy to see us. Or is this part of the UK’s new tourism strategy? “Go home; we don’t want you here.” Message received! Fine by me! If you don’t want my money, I’ll spend it in places where tourists are actually welcomed—and where a little rain doesn’t send the entire country into meltdown mode.

For those considering Hogmanay in Edinburgh: Save yourself the hassle. Unless you’re keen on watching locals cower at the first raindrop, there are better places to ring in the New Year. And as for me? I’ll stick to countries where the locals don’t cry for their mums when the weather gets interesting.

Sure, I might still visit London or check out a theme park or two in the UK, but as for the rest of the UK? No, thanks. If I wanted to spend time with people who’d rather hide in a bunker than face a drizzle, I’d organize a family reunion.

(P.S. See the attached photo of the “stormy” conditions that apparently justified canceling an entire city-wide celebration. I’ll wait while you laugh.)‬

‪Do not go to this event!
We spent thousands of euros to come to this event 2024. Result because of a little wind (74km/h) they cancelled everything! The joke, we are in Scotland in winter not from God. And no plan B ... they don’t give a shit, no plan B except take the money of thousands of tourists who came for this occasion!
Don't bother coming here because every year it'll be the same!
Go to Rome for the new year is much better!!‬

‪Beautiful concert we could attend in the gardens or watch on the big screens just few meters above depending on the ticket we bought. Around us, the castle at the top of the rock, trees and beautiful princess street’s ancient buildings decorated with blue, green, pink colourful lights. A lot of people, all happy, singing and enjoying the night in a calm and smiling atmosphere. Super safe. Well organised. Princess street and the gardens big enough to welcome thousands of people without problem. We could easily walk from east end to west end of the street despite all the people that were around us. Not even 5 minutes queue to get drink and food without having to leave the place. At midnight we all sung together, reading lyrics on the screens and young ones hugged and danced with older ones. Wonderful memories. Of course, if you don’t like feast, crowd and happiness, don’t come. We need room for us.‬

‪Overcrowded, little entertainment, no 'focal point', few places to buy drinks with hour long queues, massive queues for portaloos. They literally section off Princess Street (a public highway) and charge you for the displeasure. Fireworks are free anywhere! Unable to get into the (ordinarily free) Christmas Market as there were limited numbers allowed in and those that were in there knew better than to leave....I don't blame them. Surely this is the last year this can happen, the good reviews are largely from years ago, before the current clowns took over. We left and had a wonderful evening with Edinburgh locals in the fantastic Dagdar Pub‬

‪We traveled to Scotland for Hogmanay for our honeymoon. Having read the low reviews of previous years (after we planned our travel), I was a little worried about going, but it ended up being very special and a wonderful celebration. It seems like they tried hard to fix many of the issues guests spoke about in previous years.

Just a quick FYI, it does get very busy and it's winter so it will be a chilly time to visit. If you don't particularly enjoy large crowds (thousands of people) or have a tough time with the cold it might not be for you. However, we went to a few of the events on Edinburgh's Hogmanay website and absolutely loved it. It was a lot of fun and offered a wide variety of experiences. We went to three Hogmanay events. Reviews below.

Our first event was the Torchlight Procession. Our advice would be to get there early. We got there about 40 minutes before it started and there were two huge lines. The first is the line to get your torch and wristband. After that, you get into a second line to wait for the event to start and for the event staff to light your torch.

The line to get the torch/wristband was about a 30 minute wait. The event started shortly after we got our torches, but we were at the end of the line so it took about an hour of waiting in the cold before we got our torch lit and joined the procession. So just a polite FYI, there is a lot of waiting in the cold. However, once it started it was very fun. It's a really unique experience to walk through the city with thousands of people carrying torches. It was about a 40 minute walk from the start of the Torchlight Procession to the end at the castle. There were a few hiccups with how long you wait in the cold, but it was a very cool "once in a lifetime" experience that we'll never forget.

Our second event was the St. Giles Cathedral Candlelight Concert. This was very special and a beautiful way to spend New Year's Eve. The cathedral is gorgeous and very historic so is definitely worth seeing on your trip. The concert was lovely and the singers/musicians were all wonderfully talented. It was a real highlight for sure. For this, I'd also recommend getting there early to find a good seat. It is a cathedral so there are a lot of pillars, which can block your view. Overall, this event was a favorite.

Our final event was the Hogmanay Street Party. We just had regular Street Party tickets (not VIP or any additional concerts). Honestly, this event was awesome. We got to the Street Party around 9:30pm and went to the Christmas Market to ride the ferris wheel. The Christmas Market was adorable and had plenty of food/drink options. It took about 15 minutes in line to get hot chocolate (which was very needed since it was quite cold). We found a great spot on the balcony by the Christmas Market to watch the fireworks. It was a clear view of Edinburgh Castle and the fireworks were amazing. Absolutely a memory we'll always cherish. We then walked over to the concert where Elephant Sessions was playing (at a stage near Waverly Station). Now this is where the party was at! Everyone was dancing, laughing, and having a brilliant time. If I were to go to the Street Party again, this is where I'd spend most of my time. The energy and excitement at the concert was really fun. And it felt very special to be dancing in a crowd right in front of the train station. What a cool experience. Would definitely recommend the Hogmanay Street Party, but only if you're comfortable in huge crowds (there are thousands of people - it can be overwhelming) and are okay with the cold.‬

‪It was my first visit to Edinburgh, Dec 28, 2023 to Jan 2. I wanted to experience Hogmanay and the only paid event I attended was the Torchlight Procession. It was an incredible experience walking through the streets of this historic city with thousands of others carrying lit torches. The event began at the Meadows and we ended up walking the Royal Mile to Edinburgh Castle. I stayed at a hotel on Market Street across from the train station and I flagged down a cab at 7 pm on Dec 29 for a ride down to the Meadows. The Procession was scheduled to begin around 7:30. There were lots of people there to guide you. New Year’s Eve I managed to walk to the Royal Mile and I found a spot near Edinburgh Castle to see the fireworks. I had a grew view. Though we were packed in with lots of people, everyone was friendly and there was a sense of fellowship. Overall it was a fabulous visit.‬

‪Thought we’d spend new year here, never again we’d traveled all the way from Great Yarmouth to spend the evening celebrating as my first year off working, we were hurded like cattle they’d obv let more people in (as apparently my Qr code had already been scannned at another gate 🤔) once your in your stuck drinks are rediculous prices, from 10.30 onwards we literally couldn’t move off our spot people were pushing n shoving to get through some were also getting more aggressive, we stood near some bloke who couldn’t even get to the loos so decided to pee up some other bloke 🤦‍♀️the end of the night we were literally stranded as you need to pre book your taxi 🤷‍♀️but as we wasn’t from the area we didn’t know any road names to do this, we were walking the streets til 2.30am and that was cos I literally had to stand in the road waving cars down NO ONE wanted to take us to Musselburgh premier inn, finally I managed to stop one which charged us £80 for a 9 mile trip, Edinburgh is an amazing place to visit but definitely not new year stay clear‬

‪I have read alot of reviews from those in the street party. Please note we were not. This review is written as observer from a secure hotel. I hope all who were injured in the party are ok.

Due to crowds only 100,000 tickets are sold well in advance.
Differing entertainment to choose from.
Ceilidh dancing
Street party
Live bands - good lineup and acoustics
Food stalls exist
Toilet portables supplied but demand is big

Viewing rather than being in the mosh - Mercure hotel best direct fireworks and street party view. Pre-booked 2 years in advance.
W hotel also great.
Waldorf Astoria is on other angle that's good also for fireworks but will not see street party.‬
