In a flowerbed at the southwest corner of George Square is this monument dedicated to the great engineer who helped perfect the steam engine to make it efficient and effectively usable (he was also responsible for the invention of the "rod-crank" system for transforming the straight motion of the piston into rotary motion) and who gave its name to the unit of measurement of power used worldwide (the watt). The nineteenth-century bronze statue portrays Watt in a seated position and rests on a stone base. Unfortunately, despite the depth of the character, of which I obviously have the deepest esteem and admiration, his monument told me nothing, it seemed trivial and devoid of any appeal; a figure like Watt's deserved something much more majestic. In any case, this statue, like the others in the square, is soiled by birds.

James Watt is still, 200 years after his death, probably the most famous Greenockian in the world.
He did not invent the steam engine, but, instead greatly improved its power and efficiency.
Watts, are of course named after him, and he also quantified horsepower to allow output to be reliably measured, thus setting the scene for the Industrial Revolution..

Poor James... pigeons have defecated on his head. IF only he had worn a hat for the occasion... or at the least someone could have provided him with a cone like a nearby statue.
The statue was designed by Chantrey, and erected in 1832. It is one of the few statues in the square to have remained in its original position, and was paid for by public subscription. Chantrey was an English sculptor. He became the leading portrait sculptor in Regency era Britain, producing busts and statues of many notable figures of the time.
Watt's major achievement was to introduce steam engines with a separate condenser. This made them faster, safer, and more economical, resulting in steam overtaking water-power as the main source of energy.

George Square is the main city square in Glasgow. The square boasts an important collection of statues and monuments, including those dedicated to James Watt. James Watt was Scottish inventor and mechanical engineer. He designed the first economical steam engine, in 1769 . This statue designed by Chantrey was erected in George Square, in 1832. In this larger than life-size portrait Watt is shown seated in a chair. The statue is one of numerous representations of Watt in Glasgow.

It is no coincidence that this statue of James Watt is located in George Square along with other powerhouses of Scottish history. Situated at the proverbial city center, George Square provides the perfect setting through which Watt – and others – can be appreciated in their sculpted forms. In viewing these statues relevant to Scottish and, indeed, world history, it is ultimately hoped that one’s interest might be piqued one or more fields pioneered by these influential figures.
In the case of James Watt, his bronze statue was erected in 1832 and is, I think, an excellent likeness of the man himself. Francis Chantrey, the sculptor, really performed yeoman’s duty in executing his craft. The statue was so well done, in fact, that I think we can even look beyond its physical properties and consider its overall size: It is larger-than-life, which is something quite apt for the man who revolutionized the steam engine and effectively eliminated our dependence on water-power. Indeed, Watt was a thinker – something eloquently captured in the statue – and it’s something, I’m sure, he would encourage us all to do today.
As with all of the statues in George Square, the James Watt monument is definitely worth a quick look as you amble about this bustling beehive of activity. Would I go out of my way to visit it (or the other statues)? No, but if you’re in George Square then certainly take a few minutes of your time to appreciate some of Scotland’s important figures.

Die Statue wurde 1832 von Francis Leggatt Chantrey erschaffen. Sie zeigt Watt in einem Sessel sitzend, der auf einem Granit-Sockel steht.
Für sich alleine nicht besonders. Im Ensemble mit den anderen 11 Statuen auf dem Platz jedoch sehr beschaulich.

This is one of the many statues of great men and women in George’s park. James Watt a great Scottish inventor improved on the earlier steam engine, paving the way for major inventions and machines in the industrial revolution of the late 1700’s

One of Scotland's greatest sons, this is a statue of the great inventor, mechanical engineer, and chemist, James Watt, best known for his work on the steam engine. It's in George Square and definitely worth visiting even if only in the city centre of Glasgow. After all, the S.I unit of power was named him.
