My friend and I visited this beautiful synagogue last week. Our guides Sandra and Deborah were very friendly and informative, explaining the history of the building and even playing a recording of the Cantor of the synagogue. This, we thought, along with the sun shining through the beautiful stained glass windows brought out the profound spirituality of this magnificent building . A lovely experience!

Part of a small mixed Group of people (10) who had booked to take the tour of the building.
Our guides were very friendly, helpful and informative, happy to answer questions on everything from food to religion and most importantly History.
The Synagogue itself is a magnificent structure (Cat A listed), the architecture is amazing and still looks fresh and vibrant even after 143 years. The timeline is a great idea showing what was happening withing the Community as history happened.
The additional rooms with the exhibits were very interesting giving a more personal feel to the people who have passed through the building.
The Heritage Centre and the Holocaust Centre provide a great resource for study but also tell how the Holocaust touched the Jewish Community in Glasgow, a great resource.
We both enjoyed our very friendly and informative visit to this beautiful place in the Heart of Glasgow.

If you are in Glasgow on Shabbat, try to make it to the Garnet Hill Synagaogue (29 Hill Street close to the city center) for the Saturday morning service. It starts at 9:15am and the community is warm and welcoming. The service is spirited with lovely singing by the cantor and various people who join him for duets and trios. The interior of the synagogue is beautiful and the acoustics are astonishing ( I was told they have concerts there). The people are very friendly and will invite you to the kiddush after the service. The kiddush is a pleasant gathering with tea, sandwiches and cakes and a lot of warm conversation. Glaswegians are very friendly people and Garnet Hill Synagogue certainly follows the tradition.

It is a 'wee bit' of a climb as the street name itself suggests but the exercise is worth it.
This Grade A Listed building is one of the UK's top ten historic synagogues. The exterior is striking ; the interior just as impressive.
On this Glasgow Doors Open Day event, I was warmly welcomed at the entrance and given a great' wee' leaflet with background info .At Jewish New Year, it felt a very special time to visit.
Members of the Jewish Community and congregation gave details about the history of the synagogue, the Sabbath worship traditions and the many sacred treasures on both floors.There was even a wedding photo with the traditional canopy. All questions were answered so a lot was learned.
Downstairs there is an important Jewish Archive Centre which attracts visitors from abroad as well as school and college groups from all over Scotland. A wonderful timeline about the history of those of Jewish faith in Scotland is on display.
Funding is now in place for a variety of noteworthy projects to include being able to open up the building more often for guided tours .
Personally, a very memorable visit . An opportunity much appreciated.

This is Glasgow's heritage synagogue, beautifully kept and very useful to those who are interested in archival study. Unfortunately it is in a very hilly part of Glasgow and not too easy for disabled people. The synagogue is still used for services though the inner-city Jewish community has now dispersed and the glory days are over.

Very pretty and interesting slice of local history. One of, if not the earliest synagogues in Scotland. Located in Garnethill a quiet area but only a block up from the busy Sauchiehall street. Interesting and often overlooked.

The synagogue was built at the intersection of Garnet Street and Hill Street in 1879. The Hebrew carving above the entrance is from Deuteronomy 32:12. The quote is about Moses. The English translation is “God alone led him, and there was no strange god with him”. The numerical value of the Hebrew letters used in this verse adds up to the date of the foundation of the building -- 1879.
This is Scotland's first "purpose-built" synagogue. Prior to its construction, the local Jews had met in a rented room, and then in a flat...but finally it was decided to find a permanent location.
It is a magnificent structure, built in Victorian Glasgow style with Moorish influence. The stained glass windows, lighting, metalwork, carving, marble, arches, etc. are spectacular. It seats over 500, including the upstairs women's gallery.
The building also houses the Scottish Jewish Archives Centre, with an excellent time line of Jewish life in Scotland

This is a fine example of a Victorian styled synagogue which was opened on September 9th 1879. It is ornately decorated inside and out, with intricately designed and finished stained glass windows, ceilings and walls.
A truly enlightened place of worship.

visited during the Glasgow Open Doors day , magnificent building , fascinating to hear about the Jewish traditions from very pleasant guides . Interesting archives as well , thoroughly enjoyable visit ,made so welcome .

I visited the synagogue on glasgow doors open day.
It is a really interesting building and lovely to look at inside and out and the lady who was conducting the tour was really informative. There was also quite a large exhibition downstairs which told us a lot about Judaism in glasgow.
Definately worth a visit at this years glasgow doors open day.
