‪My sister and I spent 4 days cycling from Glasgow to Inverness along National Cycle Route 7. Last summer I spent a month cycling down the Great Divide in North America and this 4 day trip nearly beat that for the beauty and variety in the scenery we cycled through and it was right on our doorstep in Scotland!

We went in late July and took bivvy bags only to camp along the way.

We got the 5:30am train up from London to Glasgow on our first day and then cycled 50 miles to the Queen Elizabeth Forest Park where we camped by Loch Drunkie. On day two we cycled 75 miles to Pitlochry. We got caught in a thunder storm and torrential rain for several hours in the morning so booked ourselves into the Backpackers Hostel this night – a really friendly hostel if you need a cheap place to rest your head. They also do unlimited basic breakfast food for £2 - great when you've got a day's cycling ahead of you!

On day three we cycled 55 miles from Pitlochry to Loch Insh where we enjoyed a delightful swim followed by end of day beer from the Watersports Centre there. We bivvied for the night about a mile further down the route. The first half of this day had been a long uphill slog into the foothills of the Cairngorms. The second half we got to enjoy plenty of downhill to compensate.

On the final day we covered another 50 miles to complete the journey in Inverness. We stopped at Carrbridge for breakfast before taking the 'rough track' route through to Tomatin. It was worth it for the views but VERY challenging on a road bike. It's worth stopping at the Tomatin distillery - they do free whisky tasting. Also worth popping off the route and walking down through the trees for a swim in Loch Moy before cycling the last 20 miles to Inverness.

We got the Caledonian Sleeper train back to London that evening which followed much of the route we had just cycled.‬

‪This is one of THE great routes in Scotland. Similar in many ways to the West Highland Way, but without the blisters. If you can ride a bike, do this route!
It follows the Sustrans cycle route number 7 from Glasgow to Inverness, on side roads and off road cycle paths. The map can be bought from the Sustrans webshop and on the route you follow the blue NCR 7 signs. You are never in heavy traffic or on a main road.
A hybrid bike with panniers suited us for the trip and although prices will have gone up, it doesn't have to be expensive with a little planning. Book ahead for hostels and the train back to Glasgow. If you look 12 weeks before your return date you should get advance singles at a discounted rate on the train. You will need to book your bike on the train, otherwise you will not be allowed on at Inverness.
The route can be adapted to be done over as many days as you wish. We left Glasgow on a Sunday morning and got the train on the Friday morning. This was 5 and a wee bit days. Only on one day did we overdo it, going from Callender to Pitlochry. We were gubbed.
The scenery is incredible as you leave industrial Glasgow via Clydeside, cross the faultline into the Highlands to Aberfoyle, Loch Venacher to Callender, Glen Ogle viaduct to Killin, Loch Tay to Kenmore, then Pitlochry. You steadily climb to the highest point of the UK cycle network at the Drumochter Pass and on to Newtonmore, the Ruthven Barracks and Aviemore. Stop at the bridge in Carrbridge for a pint and you're on the home leg heading for Inverness, via the battlefield at Culloden and into the Town. There is history, intrigue and beauty with every turn of the pedal and so much to explore.
I loved this route and plan to do it again sometime.‬
