Nelson Mandela Place is part way along on Buchanan Street and is very close to Queen Street station.
It is good that this square was renamed Nelson Mandela Place to remember the man who fought so hard for freedom and an end of apartheid. I hope this sparks conversation and challenges people on their thoughts of others.

Previously called St Georges Place, in the 80's, Glasgow City Council decided to rename this to honour Nelson Mandela, who was then imprisoned in South Africa.
This was the council sticking 2 fingers up at the, then, apartheid regime, because this was where the South African embassy was situated. This meant that all mail would be delivered to - South African Embassy, Nelson Mandela Place, Glasgow.
Subsequently, Mandela after his release visited Glasgow, and was awarded the Freedom of the City of Glasgow.
His autograph is now on display in the city chambers.

In the heart of Glasgow is Nelson Mandela Place. It's a very busy square adjacent to Buchanan Street with its many shops. The square houses the 19th-century St George's Tron Church, which now houses a coffee shop. The square, originally called St George's Place, was renamed in 1986 to honor a man who was still in prison at the time, sentenced to life imprisonment for fighting apartheid. It's been Nelson Mandela Place ever since.

In 1993, shortly after his release from three decades in prison, Nelson Mandela came to Glasgow to honour and praise the people of Scotland's biggest city. A decade earlier when many others were still condemning him as a terrorist for his role in challenging the system of racial segregation in South Africa, the citizens of Glasgow had been the first to offer Mandela the Freedom of the City.
During his visit to the city, Mandela said: "While we were physically denied our freedom in the country of our birth, a city 6,000 miles away, and as renowned as Glasgow, refused to accept the legitimacy of the apartheid system, and declared us to be free."
Right in the heart of the city, the square is a busy public area enclosing the shops on Buchanan Street, the 19th century St George’s Tron Church, and the former hub of the Glasgow Stock Exchange. More poignantly, it was also the former location of the South African Consulate, and it is incredible to think that when it was renamed in Mandela’s honour in 1986, he was still in prison, condemned as a terrorist and sentenced to life imprisonment for challenging apartheid.
Architecturally the square seems almost blocked in and overshadowed by the surrounding cityscape, but it is worthwhile taking a moment to look at it from Buchanan Street, with the splendid church central, the Stock exchange building that was designed in the Venetian Gothic style, and other interesting buildings forming the sides, including the building at Number 4, which is a rather attractive Edwardian Baroque building that was built as The Liberal Club, then became the Royal Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, albeit that the Academy has since moved location.

This can be found just off Buchanan Street nearby the underground station. A nice tribute to this great man who sacrificed so much.
This was where the South African Consulate was overlooking here.
We have been to Cape Town and saw his house and the prison he was incarcerated on Robbin Island.

Visited this lovely square in Glasgow taking in the vibes and looking for a restaurant .
It was a lovely June Day ( dry for a change ) and it was pleasant . Cosmopolitan and surrounded by different tourists and accents .
Scottish piper in the background and easy access to train station .
We picked a wonderful restaurant which will be mentioned in my next review .

This thoroughfare is well situated for several good shopping streets, Restaurants ,Bars, Cinemas, Theatres and Transport. Apart from all that it has very little significance apart from the tribute to Nelson Mandela. I wouldn't go as far as to say it's a tourist attraction and therefore can't give any more than a 1 rating or give a recommendation to visit.

Glasgow Stock Exchange was here for many years, hence the stunning buildings overlooking the Church in the Squares centre. Have a good look at the buildings, and the sleeping Jesus statue. It is a tribute to Nelson Mandela as the South African embassy was here back in the day.

Nelson Mandela Place was so named as a show of solidarity with the great man and the city's opposition to the apartheid system then in place in South Africa. The name was also significant by the fact that the then South African consulate-general was based in Stock Exchange building close by.
This square is next to the shopping street, Buchanan Street and all the great shopping area of the city centre. The square does have a few restaurants and there's also the St George's Tron Church. An extra star for honouring the great man.
