‪There are a wide ranging array of exhibits some of which should appeal to anyone who visits. History, geology, Dounray, the Vikings as well as the local wildlife and nature are all there.

Educational as well as entertaining so well worth a visit.‬

‪After a long morning of travelling we were looking forwards to visiting the museum and art gallery due to the good reviews elsewhere on the web. Sadly upon arrival it states the museum and art gallery is closed permanently. If someone could kindly announce this publicly on the web I think it would help tourists out.
It seems a great shame from what I have read from other users about this place.‬

‪I have been here a few times and was looking forward to spending an hour or two there with my friend (who had never been but was looking forward to a first visit). Not an awful lot to do in Thurso so this was to be the highlight of our day. It was a brilliant asset for the town.
It was closed.
According to a 'local': it was super popular until some bright spark decided to charge for entry. Attendance drops as it is no longer free and because of a drop in numbers they close it.

Shame on you whoever you are that decided to charge then close it. Was this planned? Will it become a summer only opening? Is it permanently closed? What is happening to the contents?

A great loss to Thurso. A great shame. Many museums now make a decent income from their cafe's and do not need to charge for entry. Why not here? Why not make part of it charged and rest free if you want raise some extra pennies?

Very curious.‬

‪There are a number of different areas covered by the museum, which is centrally placed in Thurso. The first is a room with Pictish exhibits, which has some interesting stones taken from the Caithness area. This proceeds through to a display on Dounreay Nuclear Power Station (both down and upstairs) which includes original pieces from Dounreay. This moves into an exhibition on the nature of Caithness and includes documentaries. I was particularly impressed by the stuffed birds including a little penguin called Peter! The art gallery was closed on the day we visited for redressing, and the shop had some interesting prints and gift ideas. If you are in the area, the museum will fill a couple of hours enjoyably.‬

‪Great museum with lots on display about Caithness history. Displays include interesting videos about Caithness history. Museum includes a small gift shop and a great cosy cafe which is well priced. Well worth the small £4 entry fee if you are interested in history

‪It cost me £4 for entrance to this museum and there is plenty to see inside. The building was once the local town house and it was nice to see the flags flying outside. The biggest exhibition was the story of Dounreay. I watched a film called "Caithness Horizons" and then I bought the DVD of the same. I was here for about 1hr there is a café and a shop.
The Ulbster stone was on display in the Thurso Museum, the detail is quite something. The stone takes its name from the coastal village just south of Wick. The stone was unearthed in the graveyard of St Martin’s Chapel in Ulbster. The stone was carved around the 8th century AD and you can see the amazing carvings. The stone is on loan to the museum from Lord Thurso.‬

‪Anyone spending any time in Thurso or the surrounding area would find this museum of interest. The section on the Picts should finally dispel the idea that they were a bunch of barbarians who spent their time painting themselves with woad and throwing rocks at Romans. The section on Dounreay power station is a fascinating reminder of its history and importance to the area and the general section includes a video about the local natural history that is well worth watching.
Best of all for me is the entire control desk from the power station. All those dials, buttons and paper prints from a pre-digital time makes one realise that it is as much from a bygone age as the Pictish standing stones downstairs.
There is also a small art gallery containing temporary exhibitions. On this visit, it was "Graffito". Original sketches for comic strips such as Judge Dredd.
Apart from the case of rather moth-eaten stuffed birds (obligatory for just about every museum), this is a nice, imaginative example of what can be done with a small museum.‬

‪Well worth a visit. For an entry fee of £4 you get presentations on Caithness and its natural history, on the Dounreay nuclear research centre, on the Viking and Pictish peoples who lived in Caithness and on some important local people. There is a simple cafe downstairs which serves drinks and tasty snacks. Not full of dusty exhibits like some regional museums. ‬

‪I went to the Caithness Horizons Museum to see the Caithness Family History Society (by appointment). The Society is one of several organisations using the Centre. Afterwards I spent an hour exploring the museum - I would have been there longer, but I arrived close to closing time.

The reactor control panel is real, not just a mock up - it was donated during the decommissioning of the Dunreay station. There are great displays of natural history, including the people who have contributed to the history and learning of the area.

There is a great video of the features of the local area - well worth 20 minutes or so. Lots of the displays are simple interactives, and I noticed lots of kids and teenagers exploring them

The gallery was interesting, and of course I sampled the cafe - both food and coffee were excellent and reasonably priced. The museum shop had above-average quality items.

The centre is also the information centre during summer months. Staff were very helpful with transport information and lots of local info.

If you stay and see all the exhibits and services, you could easily spend 2-3 hours here.

The only downside that I can think of is that during the summer, the Centre is closed on Mondays.‬
