Dounreay should provide a route around their site. It is not acceptable to keep walking on the road, especially with the NC500 causing so much traffic. We have tried many times, but finally there is a route from Crosskirk to Vulcan which is available to Friends of the North Highland Way. The farmers are friendly and helpful, so you will have no problems there.

The other reviews are accurate- this is not worth it. It's a parking lot with a few worn placards and nothing really to see. Having visited the atomic museum in Idaho, this is not even close.

I’m minded to agree with other reviews here saying poor effort by the industry. Wasn’t expecting a full blown visitor centre but the info boards are lacking, one even citing a part of the site work ‘which would be continuing until 2014’. As something unusual in a part of Scotland with lots of tourists and local alike looking for the unusual I’m sure they could do better. Both withstanding the poor info effort, the viewing car park has the best billiard table tarmac in Scotland and the lawns would make a National Trust walled garden proud. As an aside, the Thurso museum which does contain a considerable exhibit on the site and its local
influence etc doesn’t open Sunday or Monday.

This area has the best beaches anywhere with a great harbour the power station is being De commission the harbour is a working harbour

I was really looking forward to a hi tech inter user activity centre like at Hinckley B at Bristol. This is a total utter waste of time and effort to read 5 boards up in a car park! Here we are in a ground breaking global technology event and the effort made to demonstrate UK technology and capability is close to zero. Total utter missed opportunity to make this an outstanding educational and tourist attraction . UKAEA how could you do so little !

It’s ok to get into viewing area if you are into that. Turn into main entrance then almost immediate right to get there .

My comments refer to the time that I worked at the Dounreay reactor site, in 1990. I was involved in a site investigation which sought to determine if this would be a good place to develop an underground nuclear waste repository. But the hydrology is unsatisfactory for this purpose. The bed rock too fissured and inundated with water.
I learnt so much while I was on site. I am still processing the insights. The big one was to realise that the "four-interactive-forces" that nuclear physics has determined are in each and every atom, these same four qualities of energy are equally here between and amongst us humans. Three of them are forms of Love, while the fourth is a form of Light.
There's so much more we need to know about the Atomic World. The two reactors that operated here typify men's behaviour when we discover a new land: immediately looking for commercial reward. The next stage in my experience is that we become more curious and responsible, and see how the Atomic World is another dimension of life, in this shared multi-tiered universal system that we all live within.
I was able to experience the feeling of radiation while working on site. It was full of sadness and despair. I find this is an indication of the sentient nature of the particle world. Atoms meanwhile are the family systems of the particle population.
Once we take an interest in the social nature of the particle world, I think we will soon enough figure out how to create a remedial process that can restore this old reactor site to a green-field condition. It would in fact be a good place to establish a school or University, where these skills can be developed.

Could only view at a distance from a parking area with information boards. Left to your own imagination to wonder all that must have happened there.
