‪We are fortunate to have made this trip twice, in terms of wilderness, wildlife and views the West coast to the North is definitely the best part, second time around we travelled from fort William to Durness and included the Isle of Skye (which you can traverse in a van easily in two days and see everything plus do a bit of hiking) our main stops were Arisaig, Skye, Applecross, Shieldaig, Achmelvich and Durness, all very isolated and beautiful. We saw plenty of wildlife including otters, deer, seals, marine birds and birds of prey and met friendly travellers and locals along the way. It’s a very peaceful, reflective and restorative experience. 10 days is more than enough, in that time we fitted in 6 decent hikes and climbs.

The weather is extreme at times so ensure you have supplies and appropriate clothing, you will need to take some food supplies as there is sparse provision on the route bar the honey pots. We did find that the NC500 food stop wagons were not all that and were overpriced. The driving is one track in places for long miles and please offer courtesy when driving in a van by stopping to allow people to pass. Additionally think about where you’re parking. Areas would not be suitable to for large vehicles and or inexperienced drivers, you need to research this before planning your route.

There is ample provision for vans and motorhomes to fill with water and deposit waste, we went off peak season and even though the provision is there we did see evidence of people dumping their waste which is awful, I can imagine how much worse this can be in peak season and how poor behaviours and influx makes local residents feel. Subsequently, we felt off vibes from locals a couple of times which was a shame.

We stayed on sites during our trip and our favourites were Shieldaig and Sango sands. Lovely facilities and hot showers with fair prices. Plenty of opportunities to support local communities at farm and craft shops etc.

I would recommend going out of season, we have never been in peak season and can imagine it could be unpleasant with an influx of travellers on roads and sites, but each to their own.

Bring board games etc and books as there will be rainy days!‬

‪An amazing bucket list trip but needs lots of planning and look for good hotels, glamping pods and B&B'S on the route as it is very expensive even in little towns and villages. Read reviews so you plan well. We went in late October so lots of places had closed down. Take a carrier full of snacks...we did just in case and pick up beers on your way round as there are few bars, pubs etc to get a beer or restaurants in quiet towns. Wear appropriate shoes for everyday travelling plus take walking gear and proper footwear Take a proper caera if you can because you will see amazing views. One thing l would say is dodge the Applecross Pass in Autumn espescially during heavy rain.. There are alternative routes to the Applecross Inn that does amazing food. We stayed at the Bettyhill Hotel amazing place , great host, foox and bed, Eagle Hotel same. Mountfield Pod self catering was amazing. The owners were so helpful, an amazing venue but bring all your food and drink. Lots of places were closed in October.‬

‪The NC500 is, as billed, "The Ultimate Roadtrip!" I have driven many, many places in my 67 years. This was unquestionably the most impressive and enjoyable.
We drove north from our son's family's home in Dornoch largely along the A837 to Ardvreck Castle. From there it was further north to Durness for a coffee and pastry at Cocoa Mountain. The entire trip to Durness was filled with an ever-changing vista of mountains and broad valleys. Stunning views.
From Durness we headed east along the NC500 to Tongue. Simply awe inspiring. The North Atlantic crashing into the coast, the views from the road, the pleasure of the drive. Incredible.
The trip back to Dornoch from Tongue was awfully nice, but a bit anticlimactic after what had gone before.
My only caution is to be sure you're comfortable on single-track roadways. About two-thirds of our drive required constant attention for oncoming cars (and lorries!) and the Passing Places.‬

‪Amazing drive but choose your time of year. The second week of October has been perfect.

We travelled clockwise which I recommend because you are on the best side of the road for the coastal vies and lay-bys .

Best place we’ve stayed so far is Inverlochy Castle.

Would not stay at Shieldaig Lodge - suggest Torrington instead.

Would not stay at Inver Lodge - suggest Albanac instead.

In Lochinver - suggest Delilah’s to eat.‬

‪It was awful. I wouldn't go again and i wouldn't recommend it to anyone. It was like having a holiday beside a race-track, the noise didn't die down till after ten. There is so much traffic on roads that weren't designed for it that they're full of pot-holes and broken verges. There are long miles of single-track road where inexperienced drivers just drive off the verge to let others past. They don't seem to understand what passing places are for.
To market this as Scotland's answer to America's Route 66 is a blatant lie and should be legally challenged.‬

‪A bit like describing marriage. Some wonderful moments that just make you think "Wow" followed by some bumps in the road that you have to negotiate. Best advice given being to do your research, plan and book things like accommodation & restaurants well in advance to avoid being turned away. We hired a small hatchback from Arnold Clark in Inverness and flew from Manchester, that worked. We drove anti clockwise and made first base at Thrumster in order to hit John o'Groats next morning before the coaches arrived , that worked too. Refill petrol in Thurso, get provisions at Tesco, that worked. Excellent hotel at Bettyhill, tick, again at Ullapool, tick. Divert to Isle of Skye? Why not?. Fabulous scenery, deserted roads, occasional scary single track roads, potholes, motorhomes (too big!) trucks & buses (find a passing place), torrential downpours then sunshine and rainbows.
Lovely people, men in kilts, gorgeous breakfasts. Just a very memorable trip in every way.‬

‪Could idiots PLEASE stop doing this and ruining the North West Coast of Scotland? It used to be wild and beautiful - and affordable. Now it's all just long lines of lazy city people in motorhomes or on bikes who can't drive, don't understand how to negotiate single track roads and have no respect for the natural scenery or the towns they drive through. They also leave litter. You are ruining the north of Scotland. Please go away and leave it to the people who actually care about the place.‬

‪Truly, the vistas don't even look real. With a bit of luck, you'll have good weather. It sounds cliche, but around every bend there was some new and amazing landscape. We did the drive in a Land Rover...the size and power were just right. I will add that the landscape was significantly different than what you see in Iceland and even Ireland.‬

‪Scenery is breathtaking, one of the world's greatest driving roads with constant radius sweeping curves that are a pleasure to drive on.

Local farmers and tradesmen however are ruining the experience with dangerous driving.

To these guys, you are not Colin McCrae and you are in Transits and Hilux pick ups, not WRX Subarus. Driving at the speed limit with one of these guys hounding your car inches from your rear bumper is insanely dangerous. I may have 16 inch brake rotors and 6 piston Brembos but they have brake discs made from recycled chicken pie foil tins. So I have to brake for their car, not mine. It was worse this year than last year and I suspect in the next 2 years one of them is going to die from driving too close with no power in their vehicle to get out of a tight spot, despite local knowledge of the road. I pity the police having to make that call to a new widow, but it is going to happen. It is a question of when, not if.‬

‪Beautiful route! We drove the whole route clockwise in 4 days. In retrospect, I would advise against the clock. Then you have the most beautiful part last. Also handy: then you are well used to your rental car and driving on the left. The last part (if you drive counterclockwise) is the most challenging part to ride (but do well).‬
