Limited exhibits, two of the floors had exhibitions which consisted of display board information only. Though the ground floor and basement areas did have some interesting pieces. No proper cafe and it was too easy to wander into the wrong areas!. Overall for us it was not worth the time or money.

Thanks for taking the time to review your recent visit to the site. We are disappointed to read that your visit did not live up to expectations.
The Museum is in two of the buildings, the Bell Mill (the original 1785 cotton mill) and the Mid-Mill (opened circa 1830). None of the rooms are empty, but are filled with a range of information and interactive exhibits. Although the Spinning Room is a large space, but there is an audio experience in here where visitors can listen to the voices of previous workers.
Although the interiors of the other surviving buildings are now residential, accessibility around the outside of the site is fairly open, and there are information boards explaining the history of each.
We take value for money very seriously, and we believe there is a wealth to see and do at Stanley Mills. You can explore the mill buildings to discover the many changes that took place over 200 years and get an insight into the lives of the mill workers. You can also enter the Bell Mill, one of the world’s oldest surviving factories, which is largely unchanged, and visit the Mid Mill, built in the 1820s during an era of expansion. For children, we also offer a fun fact-finding quiz.
Thanks again for your review.

On a very wet day we arrived at Stanley Mills to be greeted by two lovely ladies on reception . We spent probably an hour and a half navigating our way to all floor of this very interesting building. When funds allow a bigger cafe and shop would be an asset.

Suzee at reception was excellent filling us in on what to see and very knowledgeable about the Mills, its history and how to get the best out of our visit. Information boards, displays and video interviews with former workers made it come alive. The operating model of sources of water power was particularly interesting. Lack of a cafe was only thing missing but visitor numbers may make this unsustainable unless residents also used it. Men’s shed behind the mill is also worth a visit. A fine day out!

It's great to see a sensitively restored industrial building used for a variety of purposes. Part of the mill complex are apartments and businesses, but the one mill you can visit has a range of displays and interactive exhibitions telling the story of the mill. There's a lift, as well as stairs, so is disabled accessible, also plenty of seats.
It's in a lovely location. There's plenty of parking a short walk from the ticket office. Can easily be combined with Huntingtower Castle and both are Historic Scotland

The museum covers 4 floors of one mill, the others building having been sold for apartments to fund the renovation.
Unlike New Lanark which focusses on the social side of the mill workers and their living arrangements, Stanley Mills has more emphasis on the how and whys of Arkright's mill design and machinery and the industrial archaeology of the various water wheels used while the mill was working.
Amongst the exhibits are interactive machines where you can see the effect of engaging gears and pullies. There's also a fantastic machine which pumps gallons of water around so you can lift and lower sluices to makes different designs of water wheels and turbines spin and simulate the Tay flooding.
All floors are accessible via a lift. It's a shame you can't access the roof terrace as I'm sure there must be great view over the Tay. There's also a small tearoom and gift shop.
While respecting the private grounds, you can walk about the estate getting access to platform overlooking the Tay and also the hydro-electric plant.

Absolutely excellent experience visiting the Stanley Mills, incredibly helpful and friendly staff, good introduction to the site on the first floor which set us up for the rest of the visit. Chatting with the staff helped us expand our visit to take in part of the riverbanks. Really enjoyable and informative stop.

I have rated my visit as 'excellent' because (thanks to the member of staff whom I met at the outset and who was so helpful and co-operative when it came to looking to tailor my visit to meet what I had in mind for it ) in the three hours I spent in looking around a key area of the original mill, and in reading and listening to all the support material, and trying out the 'hands on' experiences, I gained everything from my three hours there which I had hoped to gain.
I am probably not a typical 'customer', as I was looking at this mill visit with a view to assessing its suitability for school visits and, if so, for what age groups, and for what reasons.
For a teacher willing to undertake the required preparation, and to pitch what they do there at the level which the pupils in their charge that day require, I myself would have been very happy (I am a retired former teacher and teacher trainer) to take along pupils between the ages of, say, 11 years and 18 years.
As an adult, I know I would be happy to take along there anyone I know aged 11 or over, PROVIDED THAT I thought they would manage to demonstrate an interest in what is on offer, and be willing to dispense with their phone and engage with their surroundings and not spend the whole time wondering where the nearest cafe is.
Anyone with an interest in industrial history, in social history, in humans' inventiveness, and in the changing attitudes over the years on the part of factory owners and managers to what sort of working conditions their employees (including young children) could reasonably expect to 'enjoy' will learn a lot from what is on offer here.
The potential of the place excited me. If were still a teacher whose remit included covering the 18th and 19th centuries in the UK, and if I lived in comfortable reach of the place, I would certainly be heading there with my charges, but having made sure to do my own 'homework' first, including visiting the place in advance on my own.
The resulting 'package' could be used year after year, to very good effect.

Dafür viele Schilder "private - residential only".... Es tat mir leid, der ältere Herr am Empfang war so bemüht, so freundlich, aber er konnte die Zeit ja auch nicht zurück drehen! Nach 15 Minuten war ich durch. Schade! Die 7,50 GBP hätte ich besser gespart.

We could tell this is an under funded part of the museum system but they’ve done a really good job transitioning from a mill to museum despite it.
Very interesting insight into the manufacturing towns where people had to live during the clearing (with their children so the mill could have cheap labor)
The old mill and surrounding water works was fascinating - adding to the history of power in the area from hydro onwards
Has one of the best hands on displays of hydro power we’ve ever seen in any museum in the world. It will turn any adult into a kid playing with water

Would our 2 year old grandson enjoy visiting Stanley Mills?
كُتب بتاريخ 10 سبتمبر 2018
I would not think so. There is lot of reading to do if you, yourself are going to enjoy the place and he would probably get bored
